Angels Win in Tenth! Old Guys Rule!
Whittaker and Whitehill (not to be confused with Mantle and Maris) used their combined 117 years of life experience to drive in 4 of the Angels 7 runs.
The Knights took an early lead, scoring 1 in the 1st and 2 in the third. Whittaker knocked in the first Angels run, lining a rare Jeff Wells mistake off the high left field wall at Oxy. Singles by Robert Barrena and Colby Batchelor (a perfect 3-3, hbp, 2 runs, rbi) tied it at three.
Whitehill singled up the middle to drive in the go-ahead run in the eighth, but the Knights rallied off reliever Alex Smith to tie it in the bottom of the ninth. In the top of the tenth, Whit came up with the bases loaded and hit a hopper to third, which the Knights 3 baseman threw away at the plate, scoring the go ahead run. Whitehill then hit another 2 hopper to 3B, whose throw to first was wide, allowing 2 runs to score for a 7-4 Angel lead. Smith shut the Knights down 1-2-3 in the 10th, making a spectacular throw from his knees to record the second out, sandwiched between two good plays by shortstop Colby Batchelor to end the game. Aldo Pinto with another outstanding start (6 innings, 1 earned run) as Smith gets the win.
Kudos to Angel catcher Paul Prince, who not only called a great game, but held onto a great throw from cf Derrick Stone in a home plate collision to keep the Knights from a big second inning.
This was another good game between two former American Division rivals, taking it a up a notch to compete in the tough National Division.
