A's claim Plymouth Tourney Championship
The Kewaskum A's claimed the Jim Pokel Tourney championship (Plymouth) Friday night with a 10-8 win over St. Peter. It is the A's third Pokel tourney championship as they won titles back in 2006 and 2008. St. Peter raced ahead to a 4-1 lead after two innings, but Kevin Gonring's bases loaded double in the 3rd scored three runs to tie the score at four apiece. With the game tied at 5-5 in the 6th, the A's sent eight batters to the plate and scored four runs with the big blow in the inning being a Kurt Zagzebski two-out, two run homer. St. Peter answered back again, cutting the lead to 9-7 in the bottom half of the 6th and nearly tied it at nine in the 7th as a double to the gap plated a run. However a strong relay throw on the play from Brad Young allowed the A's to gun down the tying run at the plate and preserve their one run lead. The A's added an insurance run in the 9th and Jake Panzer worked out of a bases loaded jam in the 9th to preserve the 10-8 win for the A's.
Luke Kopeschka (6IP, 5 ER, 9 Hits, 6 K's) picked up the win on the mound, while Jake Panzer tossed the final three innings for the save. Brad Young, Ty Schill, and Austin Sarauer all chipped in with two hits on the night. Kevin Gonring 1x4 (2B, 3 RBI's) and Kurt Zagzebski 1x5 (HR, 2 RBI's) each had big hits as well. Austin Sarauer claimed the tourney MVP award as he batted a robust .800 going 8x10 (2B, 3 RBI's, 3 BB's, 2 SB's, 5 Runs) in 3 games.
