O's Clip Cards 7–3, Clinch Playoff Berth
EAGLE ROCK, Calif., Aug. 13--The Valley Orioles (8–11–2) finished the LABL 2011 Saturday Summer Wood American 25+ season with a 7–3 victory over the Christmas Bail Bonds Cardinals (7–14) at Anderson Field at Occidental College, clinching the league's only undetermined playoff spot.
Both teams were vying for fourth place and entry into the post-season. The Orioles needed a victory or a tie to advance to the postseason, while the Cards needs an outright victory.
Orioles' starting pitcher Kevin Bronson (5–1) threw seven solid innings, giving up only one earned run while walking none and striking out seven. Reliever Tony Diaz (0–1, 1 save) earned his first save of the season, giving up only one hit and one walk with no earned runs.
Key hits from O's left-fielder Antone Henley (3 RBI) and center-fielder Ulises Mendoza (2 RBI) drove home the majority of the Orioles seven runs, three of which were scored by Bronson.
The Orioles will meet the top-seeded Victory Hustlers in the semi-finals next week, time and location to be announced.
