Angels Come From Behind to Win!

In the 105 heat at Cleveland High, there was serious questions as to the sanity of even playing. Crazy about the game as we are, play we did.
Victory took a 3-0 lead in the second, scoring its first 2 runs on an errant pick off to first and a bad throw from catcher to pitcher. They added one more in the third and took a commanding 4-0 lead, especially as Victory starter Bob Diaz had held the Angels scoreless thru 4. The Angels scored one in the fifth on Whitehill's 2 out bloooper and another in the sixth as Ryan Davis motored home on Mark Batchelor's single to close the gap to 5-2.
Victory scored one in the top of the sixth on Haney's solo to left and another in the top of the 7th to go up 6-2. The Angels answered as Whitehill(feeling like a spry 50 year old-and those WERE the days) singled home Prince to make it 6-3.
Smith, who had already thrown about 150 pitches, got his second win throwing a scoreless eighth to set the stage for the wild bottom half. With Diaz out, Bellner walked to open the inning, Davis struck out, then Barrena got his third hit of the day to put runners on first and second. Mark Batchelor grounded to first, with Bellner and Barrena advancing to second and third, now with 2 outs. Pita drove a hard shot to the shortstop that he bobbled, allowing Pita to reach and scoring Bellner from third. Colby Batchelor then walked to load the bases. Prince then fired another shot to short, which was fielded cleanly for the apparent third out, but the wide throw eluded the first baseman, allowing 2 runs to score and tie the game. Whittaker then hit a hard shot to third that went for an error, allowing 2 more to score as the Angels took the lead 8-6. Smith gutted out the ninth, striking out the lead off hitter, but walked the Victory clean up batter to bring the tieing run to the plate. The hitter lined a shot to the right of shortstop Colby B, who speared it and threw to first to double off the runner and end the game.
Game honors have to go to Smith, who went the distance in the brutal heat, and kept a cool head, even when down by 4 in the early going. Offensively, Barrena lead the way with 3 hits (3-4), Davis (2-3, single, double) and Whitehill (2-3, 2 rbi).
