Sun Devil Football Falls to Oklahoma State 27-15
Elijah Badger's 65-yard touchdown marks the longest of his career.

TEMPE ? Sun Devil Football (1-1) was unable to orchestrate a fourth-quarter comeback as Oklahoma State's (2-0) 17-point second half prevailed the Cowboys to a 27-15 victory Saturday night at Mountain American Stadium.

The strong-willed Cowboy defense left the Sun Devils stagnant for the majority of the second half, forcing a turnover and three fourth-down stops to shut out ASU in the last 30 minutes of the game.

"At the end of the day, we got to be more consistent in the second half. We didn't put together a drive and you're not going to win many football games when you're not converting third-and-1's and fourth-and-1's," head coach Kenny Dillingham said, "We were getting into manageable down-and-distances and then we weren't getting the job done and we have to do a better job as a staff, putting our players in the best position to be successful."

In the first half, Jaden Rashada connected with Elijah Badger on a silky 65-yard touchdown in which was his longest reception and touchdown of his career and the play put him over 1,000 receiving yards at ASU.

Cam Skattebo recorded 62 rushing yards and found the end zone for the second straight game. He also surpassed 2,000 rushing yards in his colligate career after only needing 36 rushing yards to begin the night.

B.J Green showed his quickness on the defensive side recording two sacks and three TFLs. This is his second career game recording two sacks and two or more TFLs in a game, the last occurring in the Las Vegas Bowl against Wisconsin on December 30, 2021.

Both teams traded punts on their opening drives and the Sun Devils stopped the Cowboys at midfield on their second possession, putting the Maroon & Gold on the attack which utilized an efficient 11-play, 77-yard drive for Skattebo recording his second touchdown of the year on a 13-yard rush to give ASU a 7-0 lead. The Sun Devil rushing attack accounted for 53 of the 77 yards on the drive with four different players touching the ball.

After the opening period, the Sun Devils led 7-0, but Oklahoma State took advantage of quality field position, driving 43 yards with Ollie Gordon II tying the game up at 7-7 with 11:58 remaining in the half.

In less than two minutes Rashada responded with a 65-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Badger on a clean play-action pass that stunned the Cowboy defense. The play before kept the scoring drive alive with the true freshman scrambling for nine yards on third-down. ASU then opted to go for two and took a 15-7 lead.

On the ensuing possession, Oklahoma State drove into ASU territory and managed a field goal after Alex Hale knocked a 53-yard field goal to cut the Sun Devil lead to five with 7:41 left in the half.

Following the Sun Devils failing to convert on fourth down, the defense prevented the Cowboys from moving the ball into field goal range with their third sack of the game. Ultimately ending the half where ASU led 15-10.

Returning from the half, Oklahoma State forced ASU's second turnover on downs of the game, and immediately scored on a 3-yard pass to De'Zhaun Stribling to give the Cowboys to lead, 17-15 with 9:07 remaining in the third.

The remainder of the third quarter showed the resilience of the Sun Devil defense, forcing Oklahoma State to take a 50-yard field goal that was wide-left to keep the deficit at two going into the fourth quarter.

After another Sun Devil punt, the Cowboys offense developed a 52-yard scoring drive that got inside ASU's 1-yard line, but a delay-of-game penalty stalled the drive prompting Hale to knock in a 22-yard field goal to keep the game within one possession with 7:11 left in the game.

The Maroon and Gold were unable to develop a drive as the Cowboys capitalized on the quality field position with a touchdown to take a 27-15 lead to put the game out of reach for the Sun Devils.

Sun Devil Football continues its four-game home stand facing off Mountain West champion Fresno State at Mountain America Stadium. Kickoff is set at 7:30 p.m. MST, and can be seen on FS1 and heard on 98.7 F.M. Arizona Sports.
