Sun Devil Football Falls in Heartbreaker to Colorado, 27-24

Bourguet's fifth career game with at least 300 passing yards

TEMPE ? Under the blue sky in Tempe, led by Trenton Bourguets' 335 passing yards, Sun Devil Football (1-5, 0-3 Pac-12) managed to out-gain the Colorado Buffaloes (4-2, 1-2 Pac-12) by nearly 100 yards Saturday afternoon in front of a sold out crowd at Mountain America Stadium but fell 27-24.

"Our defense played really well all day, they ended up giving up 295 yards in 72 plays. We outgained them by a hundred yards, we were better on third and fourth down situations," Head Coach Kenny Dillingham said, "We scored in the red zone but none of that matters, what matters is when the game is on the line. Winning football teams make the plays when the game's on the line. Because the last two weeks we've played winning football in every category but we haven't won the game and we really got to look at why."

Bourguet made his second consecutive start and completed 65 percent of his passes, accounting for 85 percent of the Sun Devil's 395 total yards of the game. He added his first career rushing touchdown on a two-yard sneak in the first quarter. It marked the 2nd time as a starter that the redshirt junior has thrown for at least 300 yards in back-to-back games.

Elijhah Badger led the game with 124 receiving yards and hauled in 12 receptions. It sets a new career high in receptions for the junior that was set two weeks earlier with nine receptions against USC. Badger's performance was his third career game with 100+ receiving yards, last occurring against the Buffaloes on Oct. 29, 2022. He also surpassed 100 career receptions after only needing two entering Saturday.

Despite not being 100 percent, Cam Skattebo found the end-zone for the fifth time this season and rushed for 49 yards on the ground. On the defensive end, Prince Dorbah recorded a career high 2.5 sacks, along with a career high 3.5 tackles-for-loss, leading the game in both categories. Dorbah added seven tackles alongside Tate Romney and B.J Green which lead the team.

Arizona State kicked off the ballgame involving Bourguet and the offense going 66 yards in nine plays in 4:26 to take an early 7-0 lead. Bourguet completed four straight passes for 75 yards to overcome two Sun Devil penalties early in the drive. Then the Tucson native took matters into his own hands and rushed in for a two-yard touchdown, the first opening drive touchdown for ASU this season.

After two straight three-and-outs, Colorado used an up-tempo offense and converted two fourth downs to tie the contest at seven. Shedeur Sanders orchestrated a 16 play, 75 yard drive in 5:58 that included Anthony Hankerson accounting for 38 all-purpose yards. Ultimately on the goal line Xavier Weaver punched in the touchdown from the one yard line to close out the opening quarter.

After trading punts halfway through the second quarter, Bourguet and the Sun Devils marched 59 yards down the field and capped off the drive with Skattebo's fifth touchdown of the season, a one-yard rush to give the Sun Devils a 14-7 lead with 6:38 remaining. Two possessions later, Colorado went 81 yards in 2:09 to tie the game at 14 with a Sanders 16 yard run with 54 seconds remaining in the half.

Despite having no timeouts, the Sun Devil offense worked its way into field goal range, going 48 yards, resulting in a Dario Longhetto 33-yard field goal giving ASU a 17-14 lead.

Returning from halftime, neither team had success finding the end-zone, as each possession ended in a punt, but Sanders and the Colorado offense drove into ASU territory toward the end of the quarter. The possession would result in the Buffaloes first lead of the night off a nine yard touchdown reception by Javon Antonio, giving them a 21-17 lead with 14:32 left in regulation.

After Colorado forced an ASU punt, the ensuing return went for 51 yards. But the Sun Devil defense forced a sack, which led to a 42-yard field goal for the Buffaloes, making it 24-17 with 10:13 in regulation. The ensuing Sun Devil possession resulted in a 52-yard field goal attempt that was partially blocked.

With 3:26 remaining, Bourguet orchestrated a perfect 13-play, 94-yard drive that ended with him finding a wide open Troy Omeire in the back of the end-zone to tie the game at 24 with 50 seconds remaining.

But immediately Sanders found Antonio down-field for 43 yards, to setup the game-winning 43-yard field goal that gave the Buffaloes a 27-24 win.

The Sun Devils will stay in Tempe as they have their bye week, but will be back in action against No. 8 Washington on Oct. 21 with a time yet to be determined.
