Lapwai girls basketball is ready for 21 run at district tournament

Wildcats earn spot in 21st consecutive district championship

In an ever-changing world, one thing has remained consistent: the Lapwai Wildcats competing for girls basketball district championships.

The Wildcats have played for a district title every year since 2004, which was before anyone on their roster was born.

Lapwai booked its ticket to a 21st consecutive title game with a 66-36 decision over Genesee in the semifinals of an Idaho Class 1A Division I district tournament at Lewiston High School on Saturday.

The Wildcats (17-5) will play Prairie for the crown at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at Lewiston High School. Genesee (13-10) plays Potlatch in a loser-out game at 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the same site.

?I thought the girls played well,? Lapwai coach Josh Leighton said. ?The whole objective from here is to win and move on. The score doesn?t matter to me; just move on.?

The final score wasn?t indicative of how competitive the 32 minutes were between the Whitepine League DI foes ? they just couldn?t find the bottom of the net and were a combined 35-of-101 (34.6%) from the floor.

?Lapwai is a quick team,? Genesee coach Greg Hardie said. ?They have some height and size inside and we?re not very tall. But it was their night. They made some outside shots at the end, and they were really balanced.?

Here are some highlights from last night?s battle:

A poor night at the stripe

The Wildcats? aggressive defense can sometimes lead to fouls and that was the case against the Bulldogs.

Genesee made 30 trips to the free-throw line on Saturday.

?We just kept fouling,? Leighton said. ?I think they were living at the free-throw line in the first quarter, and we can?t defend that.?

Despite receiving many opportunities, the Bulldogs struggled at the stripe, finishing 10-of-30 for the game (33%) and 2-of-12 in the first half.

?If you would?ve told me we were going to get 30 free-throw attempts, I would?ve assumed this would?ve been a closer game,? Hardie said. ?That?s well below what we?re normally shooting, and we shot better against Lapwai in the past.?

Different Cats shine at different times

Lapwai was well-balanced offensively, and all 10 players who saw the floor recorded a point.

Sophomore Skylin Picard contributed a team-high 11 points, nine of which were behind the 3-point line.

The 5-foot-5 guard notched eight consecutive points and a block at the end of the third quarter to put the Wildcats ahead 53-25.

?Early on, she was struggling from the perimeter,? Leighton said. ?Then she finally saw the ball go in the hole and she found a rhythm, and things were starting to go well for her.?

Sophomore Madden Bisbee and senior Qubilah Mitchell led the charge in the first half for the Wildcats.

The pair of posts had an obvious size advantage and used it to combine for 17 rebounds.

Bisbee added seven points and has been a key contributor lately after missing time earlier in the season because of an injury.

?She?s around the ball, she plays defense, she helps,? Leighton said. ?She?s not big for us statistically offensively or defensively, but she?s just kind of our spark plug when we start games, and she does what she needs to do.?

Players of the game

Samara Powaukee, Taya Yearout and Lois Oatman had nine points apiece for the Wildcats. Oatman added eight rebounds.

Genesee was paced by Chloe Grieser, who had a game-high 14 points. Monica Seubert pitched in an additional five points for the Bulldogs.
