2006 Kirkwood Gold Champions on Overtime Golden GoalThe Championship Match of the 2006 Kirkwood Premier Invitational Frederick Cup was a repeat of a group play contest with Commack again facing the Spirit United Surge. Following two scoreless halves, Saulty's header in our golden goal overtime period gave the Commack Blasters the 1-0 tournament ending victory.
The Blasters held the better of the play in the opening fifteen minutes with our forwards and midfielders having great early chances that were not converted. Katie's break-in in the opening five minutes was placed wide and a subsequent play inside the box was left rattling about three yards away from the goal. The second half was difficult as Sara was forced to shield her eyes against the low afternoon sun. Meanwhile, defensively, we were clearing the ball well. Tired legs from both teams were evident as the passing quality deteriorated, but the Blasters managed to regroup in the final ten minutes of the second half outplaying the Spirit team. Two minutes into the overtime, Alyssa's pass into the box found Katie's head which was popped over to Saulty who recorded the tournament winning goal. The team recorded our third shutout, only surrendering two goals in our five tournament games. Interestingly, all ten goals were recorded in the second half. This was a great premier tournament win for the Commack Blasters, undefeated in eleven straight games (10W-0L-1T) as Commack and combined with our prior history, we have twelve straight undefeated games, the longest unbeaten streak in team history.
