Semi-Final Round Win Against State Cup ChampionsDay two of the National Elite Women's Soccer Showcase Tournament kicked off exactly where day one ended with sunny skies and temperatures in the middle fifties, wonderful weather for the end of November. In the first of two semi-finals scheduled, the Commack Blasters, Group B winners, turned back the defending State Cup Champion Albertson 90 Fury, Group A winners, 2-1 in a match at Tully Park.
Commack had a strong warm-up and looked ready to play today and played a very aggressive opening twenty minutes. Campy scored in the tenth minute on a wonderful left footed shot from twenty-five yards out to open the scoring. Originally taking the ball on her right foot, she moved tighter to the middle of the field with the ball on her left foot and the curling shot made its way around the Albertson keeper and into the top left corner. Just two minutes later, Liz as right forward hit Saulty with a good pass at the six yard box that was drilled into the back of the net for a 2-0 advantage. Albertson countered in the twenty-third minute as a corner kick rattled around in the box and was not cleared resulting in a 2-1 halftime score. In the second half, Albertson played a more pressured offensive attack with three corners awarded in the opening twenty minutes which were all cleared by the Blasters defensive and midfield alignment. Minute sixteen saw Albertson's best chance go unrewarded as a crossbar was hit. In the closing ten minutes, the Blasters played a very tough defensive formation with Alyssa, Ashley, Campy, and Jen with Gina and Carly as outside coverage. Albertson attempted to get the ball inside, but at the closing whistle, it was a 2-1 final score for Commack. The Blasters move to the Championship Finals against the winner of the high noon match between the Syracuse Elite and Rockville Centre Tornadoes. This win extended the unbeaten streak to seventeen consecutive games with a 14W-0L-3T streak heading into the finals. SUNY/Cortland, Quinnipiac, and Stonehill were among the schools represented at this match.
