Tight Marking Used, Quarter Final Exit to Defending ChampsAn overcast, damp, and misty Tuesday evening saw the Commack Blasters host the Albertson 90 Fury for the third straight season in the 2009 edition of the USYSA Eastern New York State Cup competition. Burr Intermediate's grass fields served as the final venue between these two teams after several reschedulings. Tight marking in the first half saw the Blasters get to halftime in striking distance with a 1-0 score. However, Albertson's pressure in the second half yielded four goals (two on headers) for a 5-1 final score.
After having better field position but not many shots in the opening half, Albertson broke the deadlock in minute sixteen for a 1-0 lead on a long shot from midfield. In the second stanza, Meghan played a terrific defensive header off the goal line in minute three to maintain the 1-0 scoreline. Liz fed LB on a split in minute five that resulted in a wide shot. Albertson scored on their first header, a near post affair, for a 2-0 lead in minute thirteen. Carly and Meredith continued to frustrate the Albertson offense far into the second half with some tight transition marking. Nicky had a great scoring chance in minute seventeen as her midfield drive was over the crossbar from twenty yards. Albertson scored in the twenty-third and twenty-eighth minutes, the latter on a header for a 4-0 lead. Commack broke the scoring drought in minute thirty-two as Saulty scored on a cross from Katie for a 4-1 score. Albertson netted one final tally in minute thirty-nine for a final score of 5-1. This match closes the GU/18 regular season action and marks the end of 2009 Region One Premier League and 2009 State Cup action for the Commack Blasters.
