Furious First Half Pace and Late Game Goal Secures Huge Win

The season's sixth match saw the Plainedge Blasters travel east to meet the Stonybrook Xtreme on the campus of Stonybrook University. The Blasters, seeking to avenge their State Cup loss earlier in the season, did just that scoring the game winner with just two minutes to go in the match for a 3-2 comeback victory. Predicted rain held off and the skies were clear with temperatures hovering in the mid-sixties.

The opportunities were present for both sides in the opening minutes. In the fourth minute, Saulty opened from left forward with a terrific cross which did not connect with Katie or Carly and instead was intercepted by the Stonybrook keeper. The Xtreme came right back in minute five with Sara making the save on a shot from the inside. Another few minutes went by and the up and down action continued. Katie's rocket from center forward, delivered from passes by Carly and Hannah, was saved by an outstretched Xtreme keeper. Overall, it seemed surprising that neither team had scored to this point.

A counter attack breakaway saw Stonybrook open the scoring in minute fourteen for a 1-0 advantage. Gina, responding to the defensive mistake on the opening goal, leveled the score in the twenty-seventh minute on a terrific shot from her central midfield position which was high from thirty yards and escaped the keeper. Stonybrook countered in the thirtieth minute on a quality through-ball for a 2-1 lead.
Fortunately, there was still more first half action to come.

In the thirty-fifth minute, Mollie was fouled just outside the box resulting in a direct kick for Liz. Her chip over the defensive wall from twenty-two yards was handled by Saulty whose hard shot deflected by the keeper but was placed home by Carly who was in perfect position as a left forward which was an unusual position for her. So, the halftime score was even at 2-2 when the referee's whistle sounded.

The second half was a tighter defensive match but the game winner came in the thirty-third minute as Katie won a header in the midfield with Mollie receiving the ball and scoring the ultimate game winner closing the score at 3-2.

Applause for the hard working defensive unit members today including Campy, Liz, LB, and Gina and the midfield play of BriAnn, Mere, Nicole, and Jen. Jen played well coming back from a knee injury earlier in the week. This was a solid premier league win over a highly ranked New York State based opponent.
