TIE BREAKER / PLAYOFFS UPDATE

June 6, 2007

With two games to go in the regular season, four teams; Anthony's, Bob's, Patti's and Santaite are all still in the hunt for the three remaining playoff spots. In fact, there is a very real possibility that the four teams will end the season tied with identical records of 6-10.

In anticipation of this happening, ALL the managers and coaches were invited to a meeting this evening to discuss the best method of breaking the tie. The eventual outcome was to let it be decided on the field. The four teams will be blindly seeded one through four. Team one will play team four and team two will play team three. The home team for the play-in games will be decided by the participants head to head record. If their records are the same, home team will be decided by the toss of a coin with the higher seeded team making the heads/tails call.

Both winners will advance to the semi-final round of the playoffs. The resulting playoff position will be decided by the participants head to head record. If their records are the same, home team will be decided by the toss of a coin with the higher seeded team (in the play-in round) making the heads/tails call.

The losers of the first round of play-in games will play a second game to determine who captures the last spot in the playoffs. The home team for the play-in games will be decided by the participants head to head record. If their records are the same, home team will be decided by the toss of a coin with the higher seeded team making the heads/tails call.

Should the tie situation occur and the and play-in games be necessary, the rest of the playoff season (semi-finals and championship) will have to be pushed back to accommodate the extra games and required days of rest mandated by both Little League Int'l and our local rules. Every effort will be made to complete the playoffs prior to the start of the district tournaments, however this might not be possible. Providing there is no interruptions due to weather or the start of the tournament, each of the semi-final and championship rounds will be played in the 3 games in 4 days format that our league has traditionally used.

In the event that the playoffs are not completed when the tournament is scheduled to begin, the managers of ALL the teams agreed to suspend the playoffs until all the tournaments are over. The playoffs will resume no sooner than four days after the last Palisades Park/Leonia team has either won it's respective championship or been eliminated from the tournament. This will allow everyone to complete our playoffs with a full roster and once again accommodate the required days of rest.

Memorial Day Picnic

May 29, 2007
I just wanted to thank the following individuals for stepping up and making sure that the Pal Pk/Leonia LL was able to once again offer the children in the league a fun filled Memorial Day picnic and All-star game.

Maria Alvarez, Kim Bellomo, Sal Bellomo, Chris Boyko, Olga DelGuidice, Roberto Hilario, Cathy Kim, Karen Kunz, Claude Meyer, John Morhineway, Ron Oriolo, Nick Ostuni, Nicole Ostuni, Jenny Rumora, Donna Solari, Nelson Solari, Laura Solomon, John Stendor, Claudia Wragge, and Sandra Wrightington. If I have missed anyone I apologize.

Little League, just as most youth organizations, is extremely dependent on volunteers. Without the time and effort given by the coaches and a handful of dedicated parents, no league would be able to offer a quality program for the kids.

Mark Wrightington

Newark Bears Honor District All-Star Team

During the seventh inning stretch, the team was invited back onto the field where they were presented with a trophy commemorating their district championship. Over 80 friends and family were on hand to cheer on the champs.

After the game everyone in attendance was treated to a fireworks display.

DISTRICT 6 CHALLENGER DIVISION

May 3, 2007
District Administrator, Tom Marguccio, and District Challenger Coordinator, Ita Saldana have announced the formation of a Challenger Division for Little League District 6 which encompasses the towns of: Cliffside Park, Edgewater, Englewood Cliffs, Fairview, Fort Lee, Leonia, Little Ferry, Palisades Park, South Hackensack, Ridgefield, Ridgefield Park and Teaneck.

The Challenger Division was established in 1989 as a separate division of Little League Baseball to enable boys and girls with physical and mental disabilities, ages 5-18 (or the completion of high school), to enjoy the game of baseball along with the millions of other children who participate in this sport worldwide.

Teams are currently being formed for the 2007 season.

If you have a child who would like to participate, or know of anyone who would be interested in joining the Challenger Division, there will be a Parents Orientation Night this coming Friday, May 18 @ 7 PM, at the Edgewater Rec Center. Tom and Ita will explain how the program will work and participants will be able to register that night.

If you are unable to attend, but would still like to participate, please contact us at info@palpkleonialittleleague.com or stop by the snack bar at the Little League field.

One of the benefits of having a Challenger Division is that it encourages the use of "buddies" for the Challenger players. The buddies assist the Challenger players on the field but whenever possible, encourage the players to bat and make plays themselves. However, the buddy is always nearby to help when needed.

Anyone interested in helping out; being a Buddy, Coaching, Officiating, Announcing or just being a fan and cheering should also contact us at info@palpkleonialittleleague.com.

Additional information about the Challenger Division can be found on the official Little League site at http://www.littleleague.org/divisions/challenger.asp

Fund-raiser for teen to sell chest protector for Little League

March 1, 2007

By ANDREA ALEXANDER
RECORD STAFF WRITER

WAYNE -- Youth league pitcher Steven Domalewski's near-fatal accident is going a long way to improving safety on the playing field.

In two such efforts, a group of parents will hold a fund-raiser for Steven next Wednesday, selling chest protectors in T-shirts to be worn as part of children's field uniforms. That same night, Chilton Memorial Hospital will hold a community program on safety in youth sports.

Steven, now 13, was pitching in a game June 6 when a ball hit his chest. It caused the condition commotio cordis, stopping his heart and depriving his brain of oxygen until he was revived.

After months of hospitalization, Steven -- the son of Joseph and Nancy Domalewski -- recently returned home to Wayne, where community support, including fund-raisers for the family's medical expenses, continues.

The widely publicized mishap has already led to safety moves. Some communities are equipping fields with defibrillators and banning aluminum bats. High school coaches and others are being required to learn CPR.

And Francesca Kishfy, seeking a way to protect her son Taylor, a teammate of Steven's, found a company run by two Monmouth County mothers who designed the Safe-Heart guard -- a T-shirt with a pocket holding a polyethylene dome chest protector.

She and other mothers will be selling the T-shirts, priced at $25 to $45, at 7 p.m. at the Packanack Lake Clubhouse, which is off Route 23 north. The Safe-Heart company plans to donate 25 percent of proceeds to the Domalewski family, plus donate 25 percent of sales from its Web site Home of Safe Heart or phone orders from anyone who requests that the sale be made part of the fund-raiser.

In Chilton Memorial's program, the featured speaker will be Dr. Phillip Devadan, who is trained in pediatric trauma. The event also is set for 7 p.m. at the Walter T. Bergen School Library in Bloomingdale.
