Harbormen roll into playoffs with 52-46 victory over Hanover.

Senior Captain Andrew Staley scored the first 11 points of the game to give the Harbormen an early lead which they never relinquished.  Staley went on to a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Senior leadership again came up big with Captain Andrew Spaziani hauling in 16 rebounds and a crucial offensive tip to Ryan Cahoon off a missed shot with 18 seconds remaining to maintain possession.  Simon Brady scored 18 points including two pressure free throws with 7 seconds remaining to ice the victory.

The most productive players were Senior Kevin Tyburski and Junior Conall Mannion who came off the bench late in the first half.  Despite limited playing time, each hit a 3 pointer to thwart Indians’ come-back bids.  Tyburski and Mannion showed mental toughness and readiness to make big plays when needed.

Junior Logan Larsen actively supported his teammates with three shot rejections. Always unselfish, Sophomore Ryan Cahoon registered a season high 4 assists.

Head Coach Bob Kniffen said “This was a big win – away game, senior night and a team playing for their league championship. We’ll be on the road for our playoff games against good teams. We are improving as a team, it gives us great confidence to come in here tonight and beat this tough team.”

Harbormen are tourney bound! 

Staley leads, wills his way to 17 points and 22 rebounds. 

This come from behind team victory featured two double-doubles -  Captain Andrew Staley with 17 points and 22 rebounds and Captain Andrew Spaziani with 12 points,10 rebounds and 5 assists.  Senior Simon Brady contributed 13 points and Junior Logan Larsen 12 points - both with clutch, electrifying plays.

The Harbormen fell behind early as the Panthers delighted their loud, home crowd with fast, aggressive play, hitting a high percentage of shots. Midway through the 2^nd Quarter, the Harbormen were down 31-12.  Chances for victory seemed bleak. 

The bench contributed to a late 2^nd Quarter run that closed the deficit to 33-25 at half time. Kevin Tyburski, Andrew Rubino, Max Pomroy all saw important minutes as did Conall Mannion who had 5 first half points including a big 3 pointer at the end of the half. Jay Beckett frustrated Plymouth South's top scorer with tight, physical defense and took the ball to the hoop in his typical athletic fashion.

Staley never lost hope, “We knew they wouldn’t keep hitting such a high shot percentage.  We weren’t executing, we had confidence we’d start playing better, the way we had practiced and prepared.”  Staley stays focused, “We are going to keep rolling, our goal is to earn a first round home playoff game”. 

Spaziani had two big, above-the-rim put backs off missed shots in the see-saw 4^th Quarter. “Coach always tells us to think of any missed shot as an offensive pass to us, we go after every second chance opportunity”. 

Head Coach Bob Kniffen praised the senior leadership and the overall team resiliency, “It would have been easy for a team to pack it in early with such a big deficit but these guys fought their way back into the game.  Plymouth South is a tough team, especially on their court - they hadn’t lost a home game this season until tonight.” Kniffen recognized all the players who suffered through a rough season last year – "it makes clinching a playoff berth more rewarding”.

Harbormen roar back with 68-48  win over Silver Lake 

Hingham moved a step closer to the MIAA tournament as the Harbormen avenged an earlier season loss to the Lakers and got off a two game schneid.  

The game showcased three double-doubles – Captain Andrew Staley led the way with 22 points and 10 rebounds, Captain Andrew Spaziani followed with 16 points and 12 rebounds and Junior Logan Larsen tallied 14 points and 11 rebounds.  Senior Simon Brady added 10 points, 6 rebounds. Spaziani and Brady led the team with 3 assists apiece.  

Ryan Cahoon kept the ball moving with his characteristic unselfish play.  His strong drive to the hoop in the 2^nd half kept the team’s momentum going. 

Head Coach Bob Kniffen enjoyed the win, “we picked up the pace tonight and it showed on offense and defense.  68 points is our second highest output of the season”. Looking ahead, Kniffen said “We are one win away from tournament qualification.  All of our remaining five games are against teams who have already qualified for the post season play, we have our work cut out for us”.  

The Harbormen travel to Plymouth South HS to play this Thursday, Feb 11 at 6:30.  

Harbormen disappoint in loss to Duxbury 56-49   

The rematch of league rivals was hard fought, physical, chippy at times. The Dragons got the better of the visiting Harbormen winning by 7 points pulling away after being up only 2 points with 1:40 left to play in the game. 

Junior Logan Larsen registered a double double with 11 points and 13 bounds.  Senior Captain Andrew Staley was close behind with 10 points and 8 hard fought rebounds.  Senior Captain Andrew Spaziani contributed in all three key stats with 10 rebounds, 5 points and 3 assists.  Off the bench, Sophomore Reggie Foster scored a Varsity career high 8 points.  

Head Coach Bob Kniffen acknowledged “we are a better team than we showed tonight.” He praised Reggie Foster, Conall Mannion and Kevin Tyburski who kept the team in the game with serious foul trouble to Staley, Spaziani and Larsen. 

Snow cancelled school on Friday Feb, 5 causing the Quincy games to be postponed to Thursday, Feb 18.  Basketball pundits wondered if the fact that there have been no snow days yet this season and that it was a Friday had anything to do with the decision to cancel.  None-the-less the Harbormen are ready to get back on the court and play basketball.

Harbormen fall to still undefeated Whitman Hanson 56 - 37 

It was a tale of two halves. The Harbormen played tough in the first half leading the Panthers 27- 24.  The starting five of Andrew Staley, Andrew Spaziani, Simon Brady, Logan Larsen and Ryan Cahoon all made nice contributions.  Kevin Tyburski and Conall Mannion came off the bench with key plays and baskets. 

The tide turned in the 3rd Q. Whitman Hanson’s trapping zone defense stymied the Harbormen who could only come up with 6 points while the high powered Panther offense scored 20.   The offense of woes continued in the 4^th Q with the Harbormen struggling to score only four points. 

Staley led all scorers with 14 points, Spaziani and Brady both chipped in 7 points.  Spaziani pulled in 9 rebounds and Staley 7.  Guard Ryan Cahoon scrapped for 6 rebounds. 

Head coach Bob Kniffen praised the defense "Whitman Hanson averages over 70 points and we held them to 56 including holding their top two scorers to 8 and 3 points respectively.  

Two big away games coming up this week against Duxbury and Quincy as the Harbormen continue their campaign to make the playoffs.

60–42 win over North Quincy Raiders on record-setting night 

Senior Simon Brady and Junior Logan Larsen combined for 53 of the team’s 60 points. Brady, who hit 75% of his shots, had a record breaking night with 7 three pointers - one more than alumni Nick Passios and Brian Young. His 31 total points tied alumni KC Murphy, Eddie Bowler and Neil Crehan for Hingham’s top mark. 

The heavy lifting was done by Captains Andrew Staley and Andrew Spaziani with 11 and 10 boards, respectively. Staley dished a season-high seven assists and Spaziani turned away four Raider shots.  

The Harbormen led by 19 points with 2:38 remaining in the 3^rd quarter when the Raiders went on a big run and closed the gap to 7 going into the 4^th quarter. Brady went on a tear raining three pointers and had 18 points overall in the 4^th quarter to secure the win.  

“It was a good win and to see the team respond to North Quincy’s late run” said Head Coach Bob Kniffen.  “We have important games coming up against tough teams starting this Friday against undefeated Whitman-Hanson.  We need two more wins to qualify for the playoffs.”

Big Win for Harbormen vs Plymouth North 66-61, Record Improves to 7-4 

 

Junior Logan Larsen led all scorers with 20 points that featured two crowd pleasing dunks – one at a crucial time in the 4^th Quarter.  Captain Andrew Staley had 19 points, including the first 7 points of the game and a game-high 12 rebounds. Simon Brady chipped in 10 points and 6 rebounds in a balanced performance. 

Captain Andrew Spaziani turned in another top defensive effort frustrating Plymouth North’s high scoring point guard.  With Hingham up 64-61 and 20 seconds remaining in the game, Spaz went above the rim to snag an offensive rebound on a missed free throw to maintain possession for the Harbormen.

It was a close game all the way, the 3^rd quarter ended with the Harbormen up 46-45 thanks to inspired play by Senior Jay Beckett and Sophomore Reggie Foster who scored his first Varsity points tallying 6 points overall and energizing the big home crowd with lightning fast moves to the hoop. 

Kevin Tyburski was back after missing two games with an ankle injury. He came off the bench in the 2nd half to score 3 points including a put-back on a missed shot in the 4th quarter. Tyburski also grabbed three big offensive rebounds. 

“It was a team win, eight players scored” said a pleased Head Coach Bob Kniffen. “Staley and Larsen were big down the stretch with key rebounds and put-backs that drew fouls.”  

More home-cooking for the Harbormen with North Quincy on Tuesday, January 26^th at 7 pm and undefeated Whitman-Hanson on Friday, January 29^th at 6:30 pm.

Hingham Falls to Silver Lake 52-39 

A disappointing performance by the Harbormen. Poor shooting led to the lowest offensive output of the season. Head Coach Bob Kniffen saw positives in a number of the stats but acknowledged the team needs points to win the game.  

The Harbormen will get back on track this Friday night, January 22 at home in a re-match against Plymouth North. 

Harbormen Suffer 3^rd Defeat at Hands of Quincy Presidents 47-45 

On a Pack the Place night, the biggest crowd of the season saw a close, defensive game.  The Harbormen were in it all the way, a desperation 3 pointer missing the mark as the final buzzer sounded.    

Senior Simon Brady led scorers with 15 points – 8 in the first quarter.  Captain Andrew Staley scored 11 points and grabbed 9 rebounds.  Head Coach Bob Kniffen was proud of the team’s defensive effort that held another opponent below 50 points. The offense needs work. “In the 2^nd half, they slowed the game down with their zone defense” Kniffen said. 

The Habormen’s bench came up big.  Junior Conall Mannion scored 5 points on 2 of 3 shooting, took a big offensive foul in the 2^nd half and hit a 3 pointer late in the 4^th quarter.  Junior Conor Lowther came off the bench in the last seconds of the 3^rd quarter and hit a 3 pointer from deep in the corner to tie the score.  

The Harbormen travel to Silver Lake on Tuesday, January 19^th at 6:30 and then host Plymouth North on Friday, January 22^nd at 6:30 pm.  The undefeated Freshmen play at 3:30 and the 6-1 JV play at 5:00 pm. 

Hingham Bests Rival Duxbury 50-43, Record Improves to 6 – 2. 

This game was fast and physical as the two rivals faced off in the first of two conference games this season. Patriot League’s leading scorer, Simon Brady, led the Harbormen with 17 points, 13 in the second half.  Center Logan Larsen had a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds and Captain Andrew Staley battled for another 13 rebounds. 

Head Coach Bob Kniffen credited Captain Andrew Spaziani for holding Duxbury’s top scorer to a mere 5 points in the first half which helped offset the Harbormen’s lackluster shooting.  Kniffen kept the team focused at half time giving the message to ‘keep taking good shots, they will fall’. 

Senior Jay Beckett came off the bench at key times during the second half to spark the team with hustle which led to steals, rebounds and recovering loose balls.  Beckett also hit a key free throw down the stretch. 

“Our experience showed in the second half, we stayed in the game and absorbed a number runs Duxbury threw at us’ Kniffen said, ‘it’s a testament to our players’ leadership and focus”.

Harbormen Fall to Undefeated Whitman-Hanson 75-46 

Whitman-Hanson proved to be a tough opponent showing why they are undefeated, averaging over 70 points per game and holding opponents under 50. 

The Harbormen stayed with the Panthers in the 1st quarter down 15 – 13 on Ryan Cahoon’s two 3 pointers.  Despite the Panthers offensive and defensive tenacity, the game was still within reach in the 3^rd quarter as the Hingham five closed the gap to 10 points, 42 – 32.  But the Panthers went on a 15 to 5 run to end the quarter and increased the lead in the 4^th quarter with continued high percentage shooting and strong defense. 

Head Coach Bob Kniffen saw positives in his team’s performance.  “The final score doesn’t represent the game, it was closer … but we have things we need to fix – quicker defensive rotation and faster offensive reaction.” 

Simon Brady led all scorers with 12 points and Logan Larsen chipped in 10 points on 5 of 5 shooting from the field.  Andrew Staley led the team with 6 hard fought rebounds, followed by 5 each from Andrew Spaziani and Larsen. 

Kniffen looks forward optimistically “We played a good team tonight, well coached and they had some hot shooters.  We have lots to build on and learn – it’s not a matter of talent, we have that, it’s about execution”. 

Two big home games coming up this week, Tuesday vs rival Duxbury and Thursday vs Quincy.

Harbormen Secure 5^th Win with 68-35 Victory over the Middleborough Sachems

Senior Captain Andrew Staley led the offensive attack with 11 of the team’s 13 first quarter points and a 13-1 lead. The Harbormen never looked back.  Staley scored 16 points and secured 16 rebounds in total.  Senior Simon Brady contributed a game high 17 points.

Head Coach Bob Kniffen was pleased with the win. “This was a team win, eleven players scored”.

Andrew Rubino, Sebastian Lucien, George Clifford, Conor Lowther and Max Pomroy led the second half attack and increased the 20 point half time lead to 33 points when the game ended.  

“This was a good win as we head into the heart of the season”, Kniffen said, “we’re at Whitman-Hanson this Friday.  They are the team to beat, they won the section last season and have five returning seniors”.

Harbormen in Exciting Win to take 3^rd Place in Blue Devils Holiday Classic 

The Harbormen traveled to Randolph High School to play in the annual Blue Devils Holiday Classic. “This is very competitive tournament with top Division 1 and 2 teams in the state” said Head Coach Bob Kniffen, “We look forward to the challenge of playing against these top teams”. 

In the first round, the Harbormen fell to the host Blue Devils 62-42. Cold shooting and turnovers put the Hingham hoopsters in a hole against the big, fast, well-coached Randolph team. 

Hingham bounced back in the second round with a come from behind win 54-51 against Division I Natick. Captain Andrew Staley led the scoring with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Simon Brady, named to the tournament All-star team, chipped in 18 points and 4 assists. Captain Andrew Spaziani grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and dished off 5 assists. 

Hingham trailed the entire game, going into the 4^th Quarter down 44-35. Ryan Cahoon’s 3 pointer tied the game at the 3:15 mark and Staley’s bucket with 2:23 remaining gave the Harbormen their first lead of the game. 

Conall Mannion and Brady led the comeback in the 4^th Quarter.  Mannion had 6 and Brady 7 of the team’s 19 points in the final quarter. 

With 27 seconds remaining, the score was tied at 51 and Hingham had the ball.  Kniffen instructed the team to hold for the last shot.  Cahoon skillfully worked the ball until he found Brady in the corner who hit a clutch 3 pointer with 2 seconds left to give Harbormen the win. 

Kniffen commented “the difference this year versus last year is our senior leadership and experience, we are not out of any game”.

Pembroke, Dec. 22

The Harbormen’s record improved to 3 - 0 with a 57–29 victory over the Pembroke Titans. Simon Brady led all scorers with 20 points on six of eight shooting from behind the three-point line and hauled in 6 rebounds.  Logan Larsen tallied 13 points and 8 boards. Andrew Spaziani had a game high 12 rebounds and Andrew Staley led the team with 6 assists.

Head Coach Bob Kniffen was pleased with the away victory, ‘We practiced for Pembroke's zone defense and felt we were prepared but game-time can be different. They tested us from the onset but the team worked unselfishly and together were able to overcome the tough zone defense.’

The second quarter was a turning point, the starting lineup of Ryan Cahoon, Kevin Tyburski, Conall Mannion, Andrew Rubino and Jay Beckett ignited a defensive stand with their swarming attack. Trailing by one point after the first quarter, the Harbormen went on a 16 -0 run in the second quarter to lead 24 - 9 at the half.

Pembroke closed the gap in the fourth quarter but with five minutes left Logan Larson hit three free throws and an emphatic, game defining dunk which enabled the Harbormen to seal the victory.

Kniffen noted that nine players scored highlighting the overall team contribution.

North Plymouth, Dec. 18

Hingham downed Plymouth North 69-63.  6-foot-9 Logan Larsen was a big force with 18 points and 15 rebounds.  Simon Brady led the scoring effort again with 19 points.  Andrew Staley added 10 pts while Andrew Spaziani recorded his first double-double of the season with 10 pts and 12 rebounds.

Scituate, Dec. 15 

Harbormen defeat Scituate 63-56 in season opener.  Simon Brady led Hingham with 16 Pts and Andrew Spaziani added 15 pts.  Logan Larsen recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
