Introduction  AAUA is one of the premier amateur umpire associations in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. We officiate all of the public high school baseball games and most of the over fourteen year old amateur baseball games in Anne Arundel County Maryland.

We are contracted the Anne Arundel County Public Schools to provide umpires for their High School Varsity and Junior Varsity games. In addition, we contract with numerous American Legion, travel and recreational leagues in the area to provide umpires for spring, summer, and fall leagues. We then assign officials to work these games.

Demand for Qualified Umpires  The demand for umpires keeps growing and keeps us in a constant search for qualified umpires.
* If you are an experienced umpire looking for an association to call home, we can provide assignments. We generally have to turn away prospective new business each season because of the umpire shortage.
* If you are just wondering if officiating is right for you, we can provide inexpensive training and guidance that will help you make the call.

Training New member training sessions will begin on January 4, 2018 and will continue through the last week of February 2018. These training sessions will be on Thursday nights from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM and on Sunday afternoons from 1:30 PM to 5:30 PM at Corkran Middle School in Glen Burnie, MD. The training sessions cover everything you need to know to get a good foundation in umpiring - from clothing and equipment, rules, handling game situations to proper mechanics. This training is required to become an umpire in our association if you have not previously umpired. Contact David Ross at davidfranklinross@gmail.com for details.

Game Assignments New officials initially gain experience working junior varsity and younger age recreational league games. You will be assigned games with experienced partners who will provide you with valuable insight into umpiring. With these efforts, you will learn the basic rules and umpiring mechanics. Good umpiring takes time and effort.

Games are assigned by a scheduler using computer scheduling software called "The Arbiter". You can request assignments around your personal schedule. Most high school games begin at 4:00 PM on weekdays. Recreational league games usually begin at 6:00 PM on weeknights and after 9:00 AM on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Our umpiring season runs from the beginning of high school scrimmages in March to the conclusion of Fall Baseball in October.

You will be asked to umpire games in a variety of leagues and areas of Anne Arundel County. This gets you good exposure to more teams, as well as more officials and coaches.

Equipment Uniforms & equipment can be purchased several places in the area and through various mail-order suppliers. Visit "Links" to connect to the umpire mail order suppliers. Expect to spend a minimum of $200-$300 in your first year for a complete uniform and equipment. During the winter training classes, our members usually sell used umpire equipment at reduced prices.

Dues and Game Fees Our dues were $90 for the 2017 season. These dues cover the licensing fees for "The Arbiter" scheduling software, insurance and other necessary administrative and operating costs of the organization.

Fees vary per game depending on the league.

Application Form Click on, complete & submit the following application form "Application" online. If you have any questions, please  email at davidfranklinross@gmail.com. We welcome new members!

On-Line Evaluation Forms

The Anne Arundel Umpire Association has incorporated a new procedure whereby a coach can evaluate an individual umpire for a specific game. Additionally, the Association is implementing an umpire evaluation whereby umpires can evaluate each other.

Two separate evaluation forms have been posted under our "On-Line Forms" section for just this purpose.

Please note these evaluations are taken seriously by our appointed evaluation committee and the AAUA Board of Directors. All comments, either positive or negative, should remain constructive, professional and in the specific manner intended, as to express concerns and provide feedback to both the Association and individual.

These forms are not intended to report a specific incident that requires attention. Our “On-Line Incident Form” is intended for this purpose.
