Bombers take down Headers on Senior Night

After recognizing Westfield seniors; Alex Beauchemin, Nate Boucher, Connor Cottengim, Joe Czarnecki, Max Maggipinto, and Cam Parent, the bombers took to the ice against a physical Marblehead squad. The home team seamed flat during the first period and Marblehead controlled the flow during most of the 1st period as they took a 1-0 lead.  Nate Boucher tied it up for the Bombers when he jammed one past the Marblehead net minder with 39 seconds left in the period.

Westfield seemed to find their skating legs in the second period.  The Bombers and Headers played a hard hitting and penalty filled scoreless second period, although Westfield led in scoring chances. The third period was much like the second until Max Maggipinto roofed a shot, from Scott Bussell and Connor Cottengim, past a scrambling Headers goaltender, for what would turn out to be the game winner giving Westfield a 2-1 lead.  A little over a minute later Matt Pelletier buried a shot from the point, assisted by Gavin Carzello and Dan Antonellis, to give the Bombers a 2 goal lead.   Carzello sealed the Westfield victory with an empty net goal with Antonellis getting his second assist of the night. In goal for Westfield, Senior Cam Parent stayed red hot, stopping 27 of 28 shots.

With the win against Marblehead, the Bombers finish their home, Amelia Park, schedule undefeated, 6-0.  The Bombers were dominant at Amelia this year outscoring their opponents 33-6. Next up for Westfield, the push to the playoffs continues as they head to Westboro to play one of the top DIII teams in the state, Algonquin.  Puck drop at 4pm.

Bombers Shutout Algonquin

The Bombers headed to Northstar to play Algonquin after a physical and emotional win against Marblehead less than 24 hours earlier.  Westfield should have been dragging after the hour plus bus ride for the 4pm start and the senior night celebration the night before.

But, the Bombers came out flying. After a strong skating, physical, back and forth first Max Maggipinto scored the first goal of the game on a feed from Nate Boucher to give Westfield a 1-0 lead at 12:27. That one first period goal would prove to be the game winner for the visiting Westfield squad.  Although Algonquin tilted the ice decidedly in their favor throughout most of the second period, they could not find a way to get the puck past senior Westfield goalie Cam Parent.  Surrounded by strong defensive play Parent stopped everything that came his way and maintained the 1 goal lead until late in the third period.  Then at 10:19 in the final period Boucher buried a beautiful in close backhand over an Algonquin goaltender who was very strong all game.  That powerplay goal was assisted by Ryan Moorhouse and Spencer Cloutier and gave the Bombers a 2 goal lead with less than 5 minutes left in the game.  Parent continued to hold the net as Algonquin pulled their goaltender and played 6 on 5 until Alex Beauchemin scored the empty net goal, making it 3-0, on a feed from Matt Pelletier and Cloutier at 14:29. The empty netter was the final score of the afternoon.

This game was a total team effort but the seniors in particular really stepped up. Parent was exceptional in goal stopping 34 shots for his 5th shutout lowering his GAA to 1.61 and save% to .931.  Maggipinto scored his 16th goal to go with 10 assists to lead the Bombers in goals and points with 26. Boucher had his 5th goal of the season, and second in 2 games, while anchoring a dominant defense.  Beauchemin had his 10th goal of the season giving him 19 points and keeping him near the top in team points.

Westfield hopes to build on this win as they practice up and prepare for a long trip to Southie (Murphy Memorial Rink) on the 17th, where they will go up against a top 15 DII Boston Latin team. Puck Drop at 2pm

Westfield drops regular season final to Longmeadow

Longmeadow handed Westfield a 3-1 loss in their final regular season game.  This was Westfield's second consecutive loss and the first time all season the Bombers have lost 2 in a row.

For all of the first period and most of the second period this was a tight match, with the Bomber's lone highlight a top corner snipe from the corner by Ryan Moorhouse assisted by Spencer Cloutier.  It was all Longmeadow after that as they scored the next three goals and peppered the Bomber net.

Westfield was only credited with 9 shots on goal which seemed like a genourous count, while Longmeadow's 24 shots on goal seemed like a very conservitive tally.  Even with the shot discrepency this was a 1 goal game until late in the 3rd period and Westfield has a lot to work with should they meet the Lancers again in the playoffs.

For now, all the Bombers can do is wait until the seedings come out when they will find out who they  meet in the first round of the playoffs.

Bombers Shut Out Groton-Dunstable

The Bombers kept their home undefeated streak alive with a big win over the Groton-Dunstable Crusaders.  Westfield's senior leaders took charge in this game. Senior Captain Max Maggipinto had the game winner in the second period when he stepped in front of a Crusader slap shot in the Bomber zone, then after blocking the shot he went the length of the ice and roofed his shot before crashing into the boards. Maggipinto's shorthanded goal gave the home team a 1-0 lead, and senior Connor Cottengim was credited with the assist on the goal.  From that point, the Bombers defense took over led by senior defenseman Nate Boucher and senior goaltender Cam Parent.  Parent was flawless in goal stopping all 23 shots he faced and notching the 4th shutout of the season for him and the Bomber defense.  Junior Scotty Bussell locked down the victory for the Bombers with a critical empty net goal and Cottengim was credited with his second assist on the night.

Next up for Westfield, they go up against a top 20 ranked DII Beverly squad.  This will be the second meeting of the season between the 2 teams and the Bombers will be looking to even things up.  Puck drop is at 3:30PM on the UMass ice in Amherst.

See Maggipinto's Game winner!

Westfield defeats Simsbury for 11th Win

The Bombers headed to Connecticut for its annual game against Simsbury HS. The Bombers struggled early adjusting to the Olympic size skating surface.  Simsbury took advantage and scored the first goal in under a minute.  This would be the only goal that the Bombers would give up on the night, and they eventually adjusted to the large skating surface.

Westfield would score the next 3 goals, more precisely Sophomore Matt Pelletier would score the next 3 goals for the first hat trick of his high school career.  Assisting on his goals were Joe Czarnecki, Nate Boucher, Alex Beauchemin, and Max Maggipinto.

The Bombers defense played well and Goalie Cam Parent held Simsbury scoreless after the early first period goal, stopping 20 of 21 shots on the night.

Westfield now gets a much needed break between games after playing 5 games in the last 9 days.  Next up for the Bombers Groton-Dunstable Jan 26th at Amelia Park, puck drop at 7pm

Westfield  will finish this tough stretch of games when they head south to play CT D1 rival Simsbury, on Friday.

Bombers Wake Up in the Third to Come Back Against Wachusett

Westfield appeared sluggish after a long Saturday afternoon bus ride. The Bombers were outplayed by a skilled and determined Wachusett team for most of the first 2 periods at Northstar rink in Westboro.  The Bombers gave up 2 goals in the first. The first goal just 2 minutes into the game and the second on a crazy bounce from a long dump in.  Ending the period trailing 2-0.

Early in the second period Liam Webster cut the Wachusett lead in half with the first Westfield goal, assisted by Max Maggipinto and Connor Cottengim. But the Bombers gave up a powerplay goal at 10:31 in the second to give the Mountaineers back their 2 goal, 3-1 lead to end the second period.

The Bombers started the third period playing 4 on 4 for the first 44 seconds and looking forward to a minute and a half powerplay at the end of the 4 on 4.  Desperately in need of scoring Senior Captain Max Maggipinto scored 39 seconds into the period assisted by Scott Bussell and Cottengim.  Making it a 1 goal, 3-2 game. A little over a minute later Matt Pelletier took advantage of the extra skater, scoring a powerplay goal, assisted by Nate Boucher, to tie the game at 3-3, . Four minutes later Alex Beauchemin gave Westfield a 4-3 lead with a goal assisted by Ryan Moorhouse and Spencer Cloutier. The lead was short lived. Westfield gave up a game tying powerplay goal a little over a minute later to make the score 4-4. Later in the period Matt Pelletier scored what would prove to be the game winner. A powerplay goal with alittle over 2 minutes remaining in the game.  The goal was assisted by Maggipinto (his third point of the night) and Beauchemin, giving the Bombers a 5-4 lead.  Less than a Minute later Moorhouse scored on an empty Mountaineer net, as Wachusett's goalie skated off the ice.  The goal was assisted by Webster and Beauchemin (his 3rd point of the night). that goal gave Westfield its first 2 goal lead of the night, at 6-4, with less than a minute to play.  Wachusett did not give up and During the final minutes.  Forcing Bomber goalie Cam Parent to be strong, and stop a flurry of Wachusett scoring chances securing the Westfield win.

With this win, Westfield moves 6-2-1 on the season.  Next up for the Bombers, Minnechaug comes to Amelia, for what is sure to be a tough Berry division battle.

3 First Period Goals and Shutout D Lead Bombers to Win Over Westside

Spencer Cloutier once again led the way for the Bombers offense, scoring two goals in the first period. Gavin Carzello also scored for Westfield in a dominant first period. Liam Webster assisted on the first Cloutier goal with Conner Cottengim and Dan Antonellis assisting on the second, and Joe Czarnecki assisting Carvello against Westside.  The Terriers bounced back in the second and third periods to hold the Visiting Bombers scoreless until Alex Beauchemin's late third period goal assisted by Max Maggipinto and Scott Bussell, put the game out of reach.

Strong Bomber defense helped Cam Parent to his first shutout of the season stopping all 10 shots he faced.

Goaltending and Defense Step Up Against Minnechaug in 2-0 Win

The Bombers needed their defense and goaltending to step up against a Falcons team that was ready to battle.  Step up they did. Anchored by Cam Parent between the pipes, Westfield's D had their second consecutive shutout, as Parent stopped all 21 shots he faced.

Chaug's hard hitting defense held the visiting Westfield squad to only 2 goals on the night.  Both scored in the second period.  The first was scored by Ryan Moorhouse unassisted.  The second goal was scored by Alex Beauchemin assisted by Scotty Bussell.

Westfield Starts 2018 with Scoring and Defense!

The Bombers celebrated the New Year, and home ice, in a big way, posting 9 goals, while shutting out Berry rival East Longmeadow. The first period was tight with goals by Max Maggipinto assisted by Connor Cottengim and Alex Beauchemin assisted by Spencer Cloutier and Liam Webster, sandwiched around a disallowed Westfield goal.  Cam Parent was strong in net shutting down several Spartan breakaways to send the game to the second period with Westfield up 2-0.

The second period began with a working clock, and music from the PA after the Amelia Park Staff fixed technical problems that caused the first period to be played without a rink clock and PA (time was kept by officials). The Bombers quickly responded to the home ice music and put up 4 more goals.  The second period goal scorers were seniors, Nate Boucher, Maggipinto, Beauchemin, and Cottengim.  Assisting on goals in the second were, Cottengim, Boucher, Maggipinto(2), and Freshman Aiden Fitzgerald with his first Varsity point. The second period ended with a 6-0 Bomber lead as Goalie Cam Parent and the Westfield defense shut down the Spartans once again.

Westfield wasn't done scoring, as Liam Webster scored early in the third assisted by Maggipinto.  Next Bomber goal was scored by Freshman Connor Fitzgerald, his first varsity goal!  Not to be outdone by his brother, Aiden Fitzgerald found the back of the net 5 minutes later for his first on the Varsity. The last goal of the night was assisted by Beauchemin and Tanner Koziol who also made it on to the score sheet for the first time as Varsity skater. Not to be overlooked, was strong 3rd period goaltending by Chris Czarnecki who stopped all 8 shots he faced after replacing Parent between the pipes to start the third. Czarnecki and Parent extended the Berry Division scoreless streak against Westfield to 3 games.

The Bombers look to stay hot, as they head east to Northstar Arena, where they will match up against Central Mass foe Wachusett on Saturday.

Late offense propels Westfield to victory over Agawam

The Westfield squad is quickly learning not to take any opponent lightly, as the 1-6 Brownies gave the Bombers all they could handle on Saturday afternoon at Olympia. The final score may show a 4 goal win but this was a one goal game with less than 3 minutes left in the third period.

First period goals by Max Maggipinto from Scott Bussell and Dan Antonellis from Gavin Carzello were sandwiched around an Agawam power play that kept it a 1 goal game at the end of the first.

The only goal of the second period was Maggipinto's second of the game on an assist from Connor Cottengim, making it 3-1 Bombers at the end of 2.  The score remained that way for the first half of a penalty filled 3rd period.  Agawam brought the game to within 1, 3-2, on their second powerplay goal of the game.  Then with 2:45 left, the Bombers made the break that they had been looking for, as a penalty shot was awarded to Connor Cottengim.  Although he did not convert the shot it did seem to change the momentum, and Cottengim did score 20 seconds later assisted by Liam Webster to make it 4-2. Two quick Bomber goals by Bussell  and Czarnecki, with assists by Cottengim and Connor Fitzgerald and Tanner Koziol, finally secured the win for Westfield.

Up next for Westfield, a home ice matinee. The Bombers will face the West Springfield Terriers, who are having one of their best seasons in years, with a 3-1 Berry and 8-3 overall record.   Puck drop is at noon on the home ice of Amelia Park.

Bombers Put Up 7 Against Brownies

Westfield defeated Agawam 7-2 in a Thursday matinee make-up game versus Agawam at Amelia Park gaining their 6th straight victory on the strong shoulders of senior captain Max Maggipinto.  Maggipinto scored 4 goals and was a dominant force on the ice throughout the game.  The Bombers opened the scoring midway through the 1st period when Freshman Aidan Fitzgerald tallied on a rebound of an Alex Beauchemin shot.  The Bombers struck again 1:10 later with a pretty tic-tac-toe goal with Maggipinto scoring from Scott Bussell and Connor Cottengim (3 assists apiece).  Agawam answered quickly 21 seconds later when Steve Grasso stole a pass just inside the Bomber blue line and fed Matt Burke who fired a shot past Bomber goalie Cam Parent.   Fitzgerald was in the right spot again later in the 1st when he slammed home a rebound of a Beauchemin shot from the slot to make the score 3-1 after the first stanza.  Westfield dominated play early in the 2nd, but the scrappy Brownies were able to pull within one with a second Burke goal when he squirted a bouncing knuckler past Parent.  Less than a minute later, Maggipinto was able to steer a Bussell rebound past Brownie netminder Nick Brady with the puck deflecting off his pads into the goal.  After a quick review, the referees deemed the goal good restoring the Bomber’s 2 goal led.  Late in the period, Maggipinto added another tally showing off his strength by scoring off of a Danny Buckelew rebound with 2 helpless Brownies draped over him.  Westfield continued to carry play in the 3rd although only 1 goal was scored with Ryan Moorhouse taking a pass from Alex Beauchemin at the Agawam blue line and sniping a 40-foot wrister past a screened Brady.  The Bombers defense had a strong offensive game with the assists from Buckelew, Tanner Koziol, Connor Fitzgerald and Captain Nate Boucher.  Parent ended up with the win and 11 saves while CJ Czarnecki took over between the pipes for Westfield in the third period stopping the 3 shots he faced.   The Bombers travel to Simsbury Friday evening to face the Trojans.
