What is the level of committment that is expected of my child and myself in Travel Basketball?

Travel basketball is not simply recreational basketball. It is for players who want to learn the game and improve their skills for the next level of HS basketball. To that end, players will need to commit to:

  • Two practices a week (90 minutes each)
  • The "CA House League" on Saturday Mornings (about an hour and 15 minutes)
  • At least one game on the weekend (typically Sundays).

Practices start in mid October and the season ends in early March.

CYB is a volunteer run organization and every little bit helps. Please look at volunteer opportunities and try to help even if it is something small.

What if a conflict with another sport arises with Travel Basketball?
It is understood that players may be involved in other sports/activities and that is encouraged. However, the expectation is that if there is a conflict with another sport, because basketball is "in season", that basketball will be the priority. Even if the conflict is between a game in another sport vs. a basketball practice, the expectation is that the player come to the practice because basketball is "in season." During other sports seasons, players would be expected to give the same courtesy and priority to that in season sport when a similar conflict arises with off-season basketball activities.

What is the "CA House League"?
The CA House League is a youth basketball league held on Saturday Mornings made up of ONLY Canandaigua area students held ONLY at Canandaigua Facilities. There will be two days of evaluations after which players will be broken up into teams and given team 'jerseys.' Celtics, Lakers, Knicks, UCONN, Syracuse, Tennessee etc.

Each Saturday thereafter will consist of 20-30 minutes of skills training and then a game against another in-house team. Teams will be coached by current JV and Varsity players.

What is the "Little Dribblers" program?
The Little Dribblers program is set up to help the youngest basketball players develop the foundational skills that will help them as they get older. Each Saturday they will be taken through skills and drills by our JV and Varsity players.

Can my child play in JUST the CA House League?
Yes. If your child plays on a Travel Team they will be expected to play in the CA House League but you can elect to have your child play in just the CA House League.

My child goes to St. Mary's School, can s/he still participate?
Of Course!

Will there be team selections for Travel Basketball?
Every effort will be made to accomodate anyone who would like to play. However, sometimes due to limited volunteers and gym space it is possible that there will be selections.

The Saturday CA House League and Little Dribblers will accomodate everyone who would like to play even if they are not on a Travel Team.
