Moose Awards 2014

March 18, 2014

The inaugural regular season is over and playoffs are about to begin.  It's time to honor those who have made this campaign fun and successful in many different ways before the team tries to win a championship together. Here are the First Annual Moose Awards!

The Between the Pipes Award:  Let’s start with the most important position in hockey.  Kevin Kinnelly wins this award not because he was the only goalie, but because he dedicated his efforts to improving himself at a very difficult position. He played in all the games he was allowed to, keeping the games close and giving the team a chance to win.

The Reggie Dunlop Award:  This goes to the leader, Captain Jeff Lazuka.  He is a veteran player with substantial hockey IQ.   The DR Moose team and its activities would not exist without his dedicated efforts.

The Head and Shoulders Award: For beautiful flowing hockey hair.  Obvious choice here, Assistant Captain Andrew Szczepanski.

MVP:  A hard decision to make.  This group values team play over individual stats, but there are a few talented players that were considered. The winner is, Kyle Page.  Kyle made things look easy most of the time.  He was among the scoring leaders in all categories all season long.

The Lady Bing: A prestigious award for a gentlemanly player.  Veteran Ryan Renner is chosen because he was willing to learn and played in most of the games this year, playing hard every time he stepped on the ice, yet hardly ever did he make a boneheaded play or take a stupid penalty.  A tough task to accomplish in beer league.

The Dedication Award:  Brandon Siemens and Andrew Szczepanski are the most deserving for this one. Andrew has participated in all things Moose.   He has a deep passion for the team and the game.  He also has helped run the team flawlessly when the captain was absent.  Brandon was at every game this season and many off-ice activities. He was consistent and among the team scoring leaders.  Both of these guys made for excellent teammates.

#1 Fan:  This was the hardest award to determine due to the tremendous amount of support from many fans.  This year’s #1 fans are the kids, more specifically Keagan, Kylan, and Lilly!

Goon: Winner, Randy Baker!  Somehow Randy still managed to rack up tons of points even while sitting in the box for all those minutes.

The D Award: They say Defense wins games.  This award is shared between Assistant Captain Joey MacDonald and Stefen DesJardins.  Strong plays, smart plays, big plays, they could do it all!  When they played together, there was no better D pairing in the league.

The Don Cherry Award: Goes to Mr. Joe MacDonald.  The reason is simple.  He showed up to watch most of the games, sun or snow, because he loves the sport.  His critique, good and bad, rivaled that of the flashy commentator and his input certainly helped shape the team for the better.

The Playmaker Award: Another split decision.  Eric Parker and Bill Edwards win this hands down.  They have been fun to watch all season.  Whether it was in the corners, on a breakaway or in the defensive zone, their hard work created countless chances and allowed them to be near the top of the stats list.

The Hustler Award:  Everyone deserves this award but there are several skaters that stand out.  When they played, Danny Ribble, Mike Ellis, Chad Behrik and Travis Tabarez played hard.  They never worried about points and score sheets, they worried about making the right play which they did often.  Teams are always better with players like this.

The Fowler Award:  This is viewed as the most important of the Moose Awards.  It is an honor given to those who have excelled in the off-ice events such as the community service the team participates in.  The winners are veteran Brandon Malinowski, Bill Edwards and Kristen Lazuka.  Brandon has been a sturdy defenseman, yet he finds ways to generously give back.  He donated his time and lots of toys for the toy drive.  He always steps forward when these opportunities call.  Bill has been one of the most dependable guys on the ice, and it is no different in the community.  He was the only player to participate in every off ice activity this season.  Kristen has been somewhat of a team manager.  Not only has she showed up to watch the games alongside many other fans, but she has been a substantial part in starting the team and also planning and participating in the team’s events.  We are a better team and we live in a better community when we follow their lead.

There are many others that have shown us there support.  We thank you all, especially the significant others  (shout out to Katie, Chrystal, Brittany and Amy) that have watched our games, and our sponsors and affiliates who have helped us in many ways.  We look forward to many more successful seasons together.

Moose win Winter Classic!

March 3, 2014

The Moose won the 2014 Winter Classic game in Epic fashion!  The game was played last night, in sub zero weather, outdoors at Clark Park in Detroit.  Conditions were great for an outdoor event like this, even though the players and fans that showed up shivered most of the night.  The Moose came from behind against Rookies to win the contest 7-5 in a great battle of two talented teams. The Event and the Venue made for a night the participants will likely never forget! Visit www.MSEhockey.com for more news about the Winter Classic and league information.

Hold the date for these upcoming events.

February 26, 2014

The DR Moose will be helping out their friends, the Detroit Moose, with the 2nd annual C.S. Motts Children's Hospital Skate!  The event takes place on March 8th from 5:30-6:30pm at the Artic Edge in Canton.  It is a fun time and it makes many kids very happy!  If you are interested in participating in the skate, please contact us at downrivermoose@hotmail.com and for more detailed information about the event, please check out the Detroit Moose website at www.detroitmoose.org.

The Moose Organization is also in the early stages of planning a charity hockey game vs the Red Wings Alumni Association benefiting The FAR Conservatory-Michigan FAR Flyers!  FAR Flyers hockey is dedicated to the development and enjoyment of hockey for developmentally and physically challenged atheletes.  The game is set to take place in December 2014.  This is the 3rd such event involving the Wings Alumni and members of the Detroit and Downriver Moose teams.  The previous games were very successful for the programs they supported.  Thousands of dollars had been raised and many people got to watch their favorite players on the ice for a good cause!  This upcoming event has the potential to be even bigger!  More information will be available soon.

Both Moose squads will be busy during the summer months as well.  Not only will there be ice times available to keep in game ready condition, but the players and their families will be assisting the Wings Alumni with the annual celebrity charity softball games.  The ball fields will be active with class acts having a great time for a good cause!  This event will take place in late August.  Participants of this event in the past helped sell tickets and work the concessions among other tasks.

Again, feel free to contact us if you are willing to help.  The captains of the Moose teams would love to hear from you.  You can get ahold of Downriver Moose Captain Jeff Lazuka at downrivermoose@hotmail.com and Detroit Moose Captain Derek Fowler at detroitmoose@aol.com.

Thank you for being a part of the Moose family!  We appreciate your support.  Together we can make a difference!

Moose Toy Drive Is A Huge Success!

December 11, 2013

The Downriver Moose Hockey Club got into the holiday spirit this season by hosting a Toy Drive benefiting Children's Hospital of Michigan!  Over the last few weeks, the team has spread the word to friends, family and affiliates, then collected toys and other related items to be donated to the Snowpile Program at Children's.  Hundreds of toys were delivered directly to the Children's Hospital of Michigan Foundation inside the hospital by Moose Captain Jeff Lazuka, his wife Kristen and their son Keagan, who has been a patient there.  The toy drive was a big success, and because of these efforts, many children will have a better Christmas!  The Moose Organization would like to thank everyone who has participated in this team's charity works, especially the players, their families and the team's sponsors.  We hope to set a good example in the community, improving it where ever possible, all while having fun playing a quality brand of hockey!  The Foundation was very appreciative of our efforts and wrote a kind blog on their own website.  You can check out the Blog in the links section on our website menu.  If you are interested in helping with future events like this one, please contact us at downrivermoose@hotmail.com.  You may also check into more information about the Children's Hospital of Michigan Foundation at www.chmfoundation.org or www.ChildrensDMC.org and www.facebook.com/ChildrensDMC

Our last game during this deadline is Sunday, December 8th so please bring a toy by then.  Bring it earlier if you want!  We will be using a portion of the sponsorship donations that we recieved to purchase more items!  Any other teams or individuals that wish to participate in this event can contact Moose Captain Jeff Lazuka at downrivermoose@hotmail.com to ask any questions and make further arrangements.  We will be holding a team party/dinner at a later date to celebrate the holidays and the season as a team. All will be welcome.  We only have a couple weeks to complete this toy drive so your timely help and contributions will be greatly appreciated.  Hockey is a great tool to spread the word and help others through tough times.
