League Rules

North Shore Summer Soccer League

League Rules

  1. All games will be conducted under the current IHSA rules.
  2. All team members must have the same colored jersey with a number sewn or stamped on the back.   In situations of color conflicts, the home team must change jerseys.
  3. A team must have 7 players to start the game or the team will have to forfeit.
  4. The home team has the following responsibilities:
    1. Providing the game ball (However both teams may agree on a different ball)
    2. Preparing the field for play.  This includes the following:

Properly setting up nets, lining and cutting the field, setting up corner flags.

NOTE:  The referee has the jurisdiction to forfeit the home team if he / she feels that the field is not suitable for a game (excluding weather conditions)

  1. All teams must report to the game site regardless of weather conditions.  Only the referee can declare a postponement.
  2. In case of a postponement, the two teams and the referee are encouraged to determine a make-up date at that time.  The league office should be notified of the make-up date, time, and place. If a team finds it necessary to reschedule their game for reasons other than inclement weather conditions, the coach shall notify the league commissioner, the referee assignment chairman, and the opposing coach at least 5 days prior to the originally scheduled game.  The coach(es) who have asked for the game to be rescheduled are to take responsibility for scheduling an official for that game.
  3. If the referee fails to arrive, the game should be officiated by the coaches or their designates.  If the official arrives later he will take over the game from that time which has already elapsed. Please contact the league coordinator if an official does fail to show up so that the appropriate person can be compensated for their effort.  Provide the individual’s name, address, and telephone number.
  4. A game shall be considered a completed game if ½ of the game had been played and was called by the referee due to bad weather conditions.
  5. A forfeit is a 3-0 loss for the forfeiting team in all cases, with one exception which is noted as follows:  If the forfeit occurs after play has started and the opposing team has scored more than 3 goals, they will receive credit for all of their goals.
  6. Each team is responsible for the behavior of the spectators.  The coaches and teams must cooperate with the referee to remove any person from the playing area who is causing problems.  There should be absolutely no alcoholic beverages on or near the field.
  7. All disciplinary problems occurring before, during, or after a game will be reviewed by the referee and league commissioners.  Our decision will be final.  I strongly urge each coach and all players to respect the referee’s role on the field and his/her decisions, and to show good sportsmanship toward the opposing teams.
  8. Only boys who are enrolled in high school next fall are eligible to play in the league.
  9. The coach of the league team must be at least 21 years old and is totally responsible for the behavior of his or her team.

THE REFEREE

  1. The referee has absolute jurisdiction over the game.  The referee’s decisions on the field are final.   A team may not protest the referee’s decisions.
  2. The referee’s control exists from 30 minutes prior to the game through 30 minutes after the game is completed.  An official may eject any player or coach for violent or unsportsmanlike conduct.  In an effort to discourage poor conduct in the league the following red card rule will apply:

  • A team receiving two red cards in one game forfeits that game and the game is terminated.  If both teams receive two red cards both teams forfeit.
  • Any team that receives 3 or more red cards during the season will be considered for a 1 year suspension from the league.
  • Any player that receives 3 or more red cards during the season will be considered for a 1 year suspension from the league.

·         Any player or coach who receives a red card must leave the playing area.  This means that the person is far enough away so that he cannot be seen by the referee.

We hope that the games will all be played in a sportsmanlike manner and that we all take advantage of the opportunity to teach the players how to play better soccer and to appreciate the benefits of clean, fair, and fun competition.

We will do our best to make sure the league is run well and as always we welcome your suggestions for improving the league.   Any questions regarding the league rules, game schedules, and team standings may be directed to me.
