Coach Ryan McGowan is entering his third season as the head coach of boys' basketball at Pioneer Charter School of Science, having taken over the program in October 2017.  He has almost two decades of coaching experience in many different places and different levels across Massachusetts.

Coach McGowan led the 2018-2019 Panthers to a 13-9 record (a seven-win improvement over the previous season), including a home playoff victory over #9 seed Boston Collegiate in the MCSAO tournament before falling in the second round to undefeated #1 seed (and eventual tournament runner-up) Academy of the Pacific Rim.  The season also included thrilling wins over MATCH (a buzzer beating double-overtime thriller), Prospect Hill, and on senior night against Pioneer II, whom the Panthers defeated in a rematch after losing 67-30 earlier in the season.  Senior Pedro Monteiro-Borges became the all-time leading Panther scorer with 1,058 points, and Coach McGowan was voted the MCSAO North Division Coach of the Year and coached the North All-Stars to a win over the South All-Stars in the All-Star Game.

A native of North Attleboro, Mass., and a 1996 graduate of Bishop Feehan High School in Attleboro, Coach McGowan attended the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, where he worked for the women's basketball program as a team manager/statistician/practice player during an era where the Crusaders won three Patriot League titles and played in the NCAA tournament against perennial powerhouse programs Louisiana Tech, Duke, and Rutgers.   After graduating cum laude with a Bachelor's degree in English and a minor in Secondary Education, he began his coaching career as an assistant with the girls' program at his alma mater, Bishop Feehan, for three years.

After finishing his Master's degree in Educational Administration at Boston College, Coach McGowan had stints at both Brookline and Saugus High Schools before finding a seven-year home at Winthrop High School as the top assistant for the girls' varsity program.  During his time with the Lady Vikings, the program improved from 4 wins in 2009-2010 to enjoying three straight seasons of at least 18 wins, including an MIAA Division 3 North final appearance in 2014 and a D3 North championship in 2015, after which the Vikings lost to eventual state champion Archbishop Williams at the TD Garden.

In 2015, Coach McGowan became the top assistant for the Winthrop Vikings boys' program, and helped the program turn around from a 2 win season to a 9 win season in 2016-2017.  The 2016-2017 season included a berth in the MIAA Division 4 North tournament in which Coach McGowan, as the interim head coach, led the Vikings to an upset win on the road over the #6 seed before falling to eventual state finalist St. Mary's (Lynn) in a close, well-fought game.

Coach McGowan is very excited to continue to build the Pioneer program as the school joins the MIAA for the first time for the winter season.  He is looking forward to continue working hard to push the Panthers to new heights, and working with a new varsity staff in assistant coaches Dom Colarossi and Eugene Jean-Louis.  Professionally, he has been a teacher in the Everett Public Schools for the past 14 years, including two years as a Dean of Students at Everett High School.  He lives in Everett with his wife, Jennifer (also a veteran Everett Public Schools teacher) and his two children, Michaela (age 6) and Jonathan (age 3).

Player Efficiency Ratings is one way that we use statistical data to track player performance.

The PER is determined with the following formula:

(Total POSITIVE stats - Total NEGATIVE stats) / MINUTES played

Positive Stats = Points, Assists, Rebounds, Steals, Deflections, Charges Taken

Negative Stats = Missed shots, Missed free throws, Turnovers

Of course, Player Efficiency is not the only way to measure a player's effectiveness on the court, but we believe it gives a pretty accurate measure of how much positive contribution a player has delivered.
