Cubs end season with "TEAM" party
June 2, 2006 – 01:00 PM

Cubs eliminated in semi-finals, season still a success!
June 2, 2006 – 01:00 PM
The Rockledge Cubs were up-ended by the Space Coast Astros 8-6 in the semi-final game of the Space Coast Baseball league playoffs 8-6. Tim Springstroh came on to pitch, after Matt Hixon re-injured his groin muscle pitching to the first batter of the game. The Cubs had a rough first two innings trailing by a score of 7-0. It seems the Cubs needed some bandages to cover all the bleeders that the Astros put in play on them all night. "Its frustrating when your pitcher is throwing a good game and balls that are hit are just out of reach of your defensive players gloves, said shortstop Lenny Stahley.” Springstroh settled down and didn’t let up a run after the third inning. Stahley gave the Cubbies hope in the third inning. After a Tom Lombardo single, Stahley blasting a two-run home run to left centerfield to cut the lead to 7-2. The Astros pushed across another run in the bottom of the third to increase their lead to 8-2. After a scoreless fourth, the Cubs came back in the top of the fifth inning. With the bases loaded, Doug Mays ripped a ground ball base hit to the left side of the infield and the Astros shortstop made a nice play to keep it from going into the outfield. On a bizarre play, Mike Ramos scored and Lenny Stahley was caught between third and home. Stahley broke to the plate, the throw to the plate ricocheted of his helmet and went the backstop. Two runs scored to cut the lead to 8-4, but that’s all the Cubs could push across in the inning. In the top of the sixth, the Astros pitcher walked the bases loaded. Tom Lombardo drew a RBI walk to make it 8-5. Stahley popped up and Ernie Bianco drove in another run on a fielder’s choice to the shortstop. The Cubs then trailed 8-6 going into the top of the seventh, but went down in order to end the game.
“ It seems like its been that way all year, referring to the seeing eye singles the Astros put in play. But, that’s my theory too, put the ball in play and things happen, said second baseman Ernie Bianco. Nonetheless, the season was a success in my opinion. We battled a loss in pitching depth all year. We had guys that really stepped up that never really pitched before, they took the ball and gutted it out. I think a lot of guys, and myself, were happy with the season. Next year Manager Don Ingram and I will address are weakness's and try to fill those voids. I hope we can keep the same nucleus of players going into next season and see what happens. I think a lot of credit has to go to Manager Don Ingram. He has the hardest job out here and its not just making up a lineup. Its about playing everybody during the season and still being competitive with the other teams in the league. I think Coach Ingram did a great job, I thank him and ALL the Cubs for a great season.., said player/asst coach Bianco.” The Cubs will enjoy a relaxing (Thank God) off-season and get down to business come Spring Training next year, fuhgettaboutit!!!!

However, manager Don Ingram has been using second baseman Ernie Bianco to eat up some innings as of late. Mark Cronan also looks to play a big role this weekend which he'll be available every game after 1:00 pm Saturday. The Cubs can count on the regular suspects on the mound (Dick Spalding, Lenny Stahley, Tim Springstroh and Matt Hixon) to carry the load. The other question Mark for the Cubs has to be, Where has that explosive offense been lately. Well, Nate Terryn is out with a broken hand and Doug Mays has been nursing a groin pull. Matt Hixon also has been battling a pulled muscle in his leg this season, looks to gut it out over the weekend. Ingram feels confident that the Cubbies can the job done even know they're short handed. "We have a great bunch of guys and good team chemistry as opposed to last year,"said second baseman Ernie Bianco. "The veterans have been playing like veterans, while the rookies added a much needed spark to our team." I think we have a good chance in the playoffs with our full compliment of players."All Cubs players keep a close watch to the website for updated info.
