12th week and Finals Recap! FALL SSBHL PRICE CUP FINAL

Good afternoon, SSBHL!

Apologies again for the delay — last week was chaos and I didn’t want to rush something as important as the final write-up. Now that I finally have time, let’s do this the right way.

This Fall season had everything: upsets, Cinderella runs, comebacks, collapses, and one of the most unpredictable finishes we’ve seen. The Smokey Joes shocked the league by knocking out the #1-seeded Mustangs, while the last-place Stick Figures went on a wild surge all the way to the 3rd-place game before falling just short to the Stone Hands.

With all that chaos behind us, the stage was set for a classic Price Cup Final:
Stone Hands vs. Smokey Joes — a rivalry we’ve seen before, and maybe the last time we see these two in a championship together.

Let’s get into it.

🏒 FINALS – GAME RECAP

Stone Hands vs. Smokey Joes

Final Score: 7–3 Smokey Joes
Location: Furnace Brook Rink, Marshfield, MA
Weather: A bright, sunny championship Sunday

The 4th-seed veteran Smokey Joes, led by 5-time cup winner Matt Swan, faced the gritty, battle-worn Stone Hands under captain Steve Wilde, one of the league’s most experienced playoff players.

1st Period (3–0 Joes)

The opening minutes were a grind — both teams fought for space, possession, and momentum. A Smokey Joes tripping penalty gave Stone Hands the first power play opportunity, but the Joes’ defense and goaltending stood tall and killed it off.

Moments later, Matt Swan, in his new role on defense, picked up a loose ball in his zone, blew past multiple Stone Hands players, and finished a smooth forehand-backhand move to make it 1–0.

A miscommunication in front of the Stone Hands net led to Bronson Zawaduk capitalizing on a loose-ball tap-in for 2–0.

With 30 seconds left, Swan kept a ball in the zone, fired one wide, and Ryan Doherty crashed in and buried the rebound for 3–0, a gut-punch ending to the period.

2nd Period (4–1 Joes)

Stone Hands came out pushing hard, and newcomer Dan Campbell finally broke through with an incredible sharp-angle wrist shot to cut it to 3–1.

The game settled into a tight grind again — the Stone Hands hustling for chances, the Joes’ defense answering every push. Late in the period, Kerri Cookson made a great defensive play that sprung Ryan Doherty free for a breakaway. He scored blocker side to restore the 3-goal cushion at 4–1.

3rd Period (Joes pull away)

A blocked Swan shot led to a Stone Hands rush where Howie ripped a glove-side wrister to make it 4–2 and spark some life.

But less than 30 seconds later, a defensive misread gave Doherty and Bronson a 2-on-1, finished by Doherty for 5–2.

Stone Hands pulled the goalie with 2:43 left. Steve Wilde made it 5–3 with a quick wrist shot.

But the comeback ended there:

  • Bronson pounced on another loose ball for 6–3

  • Doherty sealed the hat trick and dagger for 7–3

And with that, the Smokey Joes are your Fall 2025 SSBHL Price Cup Champions — their 6th title.

🏒 11th Week Fall 2025 SSBHL ? Semi-Final Rounds Recap

🏒 11th Week Fall 2025 SSBHL – Semi-Final Rounds Recap

Good afternoon SSBHL Family!

We are officially through the first round of playoffs! We certainly had no shortage of surprises. Underdog team success stories and unexpected heroes have already risen. What the Finals will have in store for us should be wildly interesting! Let’s waste no time and jump right on in.

🏆 Game Results – Semi-Finals

Mustangs vs. Smokey Joes

Final: Smokey Joes 5–2 Mustangs

All season long, the Mustangs’ name has been synonymous with high offensive pressure, goals scored in droves, and stingy, smart defensive play. With a record of 9-0-1 and a goal differential of +43 (80 goals scored throughout the season), it seemed they were a shoe-in for the Finals.

They faced the Smokey Joes, who limped their way into the playoff picture with a 4-5-1 record and a goal differential of –6. Everything on paper pointed to a mismatch. However, hockey is played by humans with emotion, not by numbers — and the story of this matchup would go down in SSBHL history.

Starting out in the 1st, the Joes came flying out of the gate, sprinting down every loose ball. The effort was evident from the start as the Joes got on the board early, scoring off a missed shot with the rebound crashed in by Forward Bronson, who fed a behind-the-net pass to Ryan “Dragon” Doherty, potting home the first goal.

The Mustangs fought back later in the period with a grinding goal in front, fed by Captain J-Mac to Higgy, tying the game at 1–1. Not long after, when the Mustangs dumped the ball into the Joes’ zone, Defensive Player Kerri Cookson fed a pass up to Captain Matt Swan, who was given a clean look from the point and slapped it home past the glove side to reclaim the lead 2–1.

With only 30 seconds left on the clock, Defensive Player Connolly of the Mustangs tried to feed a pass to his linemate Aiden but missed the mark. The ball ended up back in the Mustangs’ offensive zone right onto Bronson’s stick in the slot, uncontested. He turned around and fired a slap shot blocker-side to increase the lead to 3–1 Joes.

It was an unexpected 1st period for the Mustangs, who had rarely trailed in a game all season long. They were now down by 2 heading into the second period.

To start the 2nd, we saw a tightly contested frame with intense defensive play by the Joes, who clogged the slot all game long and forced only perimeter shots that goaltender Andy Godfrey handled with ease. Eventually, there was a small crack in the armor when Defensive Player Matt Connolly of the Mustangs took a feed from Aiden and buried a backhand goal to narrow the gap to 3–2.

Aside from that, the Joes’ defense continued to hold strong, carrying their 3–2 lead into the 3rd, where both teams played for all the marbles.

Starting the 3rd, the Mustangs came out with good energy and at one point appeared to have a goal lined up to tie the game, only to be denied by a miraculous blocker-side save from Godfrey — a moment that would spell doom for the Mustangs.

After that high-danger chance, the Joes’ defensive play became a wall of frustration for the league’s best offensive team. The Mustangs continued to have shots blocked, open nets missed, and opportunities lost to suffocating defensive play from the Joes’ top guys.

Late in the 3rd, with only four minutes left, the Joes out-hustled the Mustangs to a loose ball in the Mustangs’ zone. Ryan got a breakaway chance and was stopped on the first try by Keeper Harding, but the rebound couldn’t be contained. Ryan collected it, composed himself, and ripped home the dagger — effectively ending the Mustangs’ season.

The Joes added one more empty-net goal to cap off the largest upset in SSBHL history.

The Joes move on to the Finals.

Stone Hands vs. Stick Figures

Final: Stone Hands 4–3 Stick Figures

In a high-drama, close battle, we had a matchup of Sticks and Stones — and it was an instant classic featuring stellar goaltending on both ends and even play from both squads.

Starting out in the 1st period, the Stick Figures came out as the stronger squad, scoring quickly off a backhand shot in front from Forward Thomas, assisted by Defensive Player Dan Gately, to start off the game 1–0.

Not long after, the Stone Hands pressed hard as Forward Dan Campbell fed a cross-crease pass over to Captain Steve Wilde, who appeared to have an open net — only to be denied at the last second by the goalie stick of Brad Wall, making an incredible save.

Around the 8-minute mark of the 1st, the Sticks struck again, with Thomas feeding Dan Gately, who fired a wicked wrister to increase the lead to 2–0. The Stick Figures looked in complete control.

However, the Stone Hands began finding holes in the Sticks’ defensive play. Kyle Cookson carried the ball into the zone, found Forward Howie wide open in the slot, and Howie patiently waited until the goalie opened the five-hole before slipping a quick wrist shot home to narrow the lead to 2–1.

About two minutes later, Dan Campbell took a shot in front that was blocked by a Stick Figures defender. Steve Wilde of the Stone Hands smartly picked up the loose change and banked a shot off the keeper from a sharp angle, finding a way to tie the game 2–2.

With momentum now shifted in favor of the Stone Hands, and nearing the late stages of the 1st, Defenseman Dan Gately of the Sticks turned over the ball in front to Defensive Player Gianni of the Stone Hands, who flicked a quick wrist shot that was denied by Keeper Wall. However, the relentless Steve Wilde corralled the rebound, found Gianni wide open point-blank, and Gianni buried a one-timer wrist shot to take the lead 3–2 with only 13 seconds left in the 1st.

Starting the 2nd period, both teams struggled to generate offense as the goalies and defenses stood tall, battling for every inch of open space. Eventually, the Stone Hands created a small opening as Forward Howie once again found a soft spot in the Sticks’ defensive scheme and potted a wrist shot fed from Defensive Player Kinger, extending the lead to 4–2.

Near the end of the 2nd, goaltender Jake Deehan was stellar, facing a barrage of shots from different angles. At one point, he made a point-blank one-timer save, only for the rebound to find an open Dan Gately, who fired again — but Jake flashed the glove, getting just enough to keep it out. The intense push by the Sticks was thwarted by Jake and the Stones’ defense.

Entering the 3rd period, we saw much of the same: solid goaltending on both ends, tight defensive play, and little scoring. However, late in the 3rd with about four and a half minutes left, the Stick Figures finally got back on the board with another goal from Thomas, narrowing the gap to 4–3. It was now a one-goal game.

With time winding down, the Sticks pulled their goalie and threw everything they had left at the Stone Hands, but it wasn’t enough. As the clock struck 0:00, the Cinderella story of the Stick Figures came to an end — and the Stone Hands advanced to the Finals.

10th Week Fall 2025 SSBHL ? Playoff Stages Are Set!

Good afternoon, SSBHL community!

We have officially concluded our regular season games! I just want to take a moment to thank everyone involved who continues to make this one of the best places to play ball hockey in the MA area. I know for a fact that we have some of the greatest humans in the region playing in our community. You all are so accommodating and willing to help out around the rink, contributing a great deal to every single game we play each week.

A very large thank you goes out to all the league admins — Brendan, Hocking, and Buckly. Brendan is a champ who’s always at the rink before games start to help sweep the sand and dirt off the surface to ensure safety. Hocking does a ton that involves guiding the refs, keeping rules and discipline in check, and assisting with reffing and stats when needed. Buckly works behind the scenes fine-tuning rules and providing insight into any issues that pop up.

A massive thank you also to all the captains this season — B-Mack, Leary, Steve-O, Swan, J-Mac, and Jeff. Without them, we wouldn’t have functional teams to field. They work tirelessly to organize and maintain order on their squads, finding replacement players when needed. I can’t say enough good things about our leadership team and how much they contribute. Again, thank you for another successful season!

With the hearts and flowers out of the way, we now have a serious matter to discuss — it’s time for some playoff hockey! Let’s jump into Week 10’s results.

🏒 Game Results

Stone Hands vs. Mustangs
Final: 8–2 Mustangs

The only team thus far to defeat the Mustangs would not repeat that same result this time around. The Mustangs, wanting revenge for the lone blemish on their regular season record, came out with offensive prowess and hunger. Star forward Aiden Lovett of the Mustangs started off the scoring with a slick feed from captain J-Mac on a one-timer.

The Stone Hands would answer and tie the game up with a goal from newly acquired Dan Campbell, who was fed a nice pass from captain Steve Wilde behind the net. That, however, would be the last time the game was within reach. From there, the Mustangs went on to score two more in the first to close out the period with a 3–1 lead.

In the second period, more of the same occurred, with two additional goals from the Mustangs and one more from the Stone Hands, putting the game at 5–2 heading into the third. The Mustangs then exploded offensively once again, scoring three more goals to close out the game with a dominant 8–2 final.

Overall, the Mustangs closed out the regular season in first place at 9-0-1, scoring 80 goals — the most in SSBHL history. Truly one of the best offensive teams ever created, and they’ll look to keep that firepower going into the playoffs this Sunday!

Hooligans vs. Smokey Joes
Final: 4–2 Smokey Joes

In a must-win game for the Smokey Joes, everything was on the line. The Joes have never failed to make the playoffs and were in serious danger of missing them for the first time ever. After being shut out last week, they needed to reignite their offensive spark. However, a determined Hooligans team looked to thwart their playoff hopes and drag them down with them.

This game had a true playoff atmosphere. Hooligans captain B-Mack picked up newly acquired flex goaltender John Correia to fill in for Manny, and he did not disappoint. Both defenses and goaltenders were perfect in the first period, allowing no goals — but that would change in the second.

Early in the second period, the Hooligans went on a power play opportunity and capitalized. Off a faceoff win from B-Mack to his flex player Jordan Cookson, Cookson fired a low, skimming shot that found its way past goaltender Andy Godfrey to open the scoring.

The lead would not hold for long, though. The Joes’ flex player Pat Sullivan received a feed in front from forward Aneel and ripped a hard shot that was initially stopped but popped up into the air, fell into the crease, and bounced in to tie the game.

However, literally seconds later, B-Mack of the Hooligans intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and ripped one past the Joes’ goalie again, reclaiming the lead at 2–1. But yet again — seconds later — forward Bronson of the Joes broke away and was denied by the Hooligans’ goalie, only for Matt Swan to follow it up, find the rebound, and pot it home to tie the game 2–2 going into the third period.

Late in the third, deep in the Hooligans’ zone, the ball was thrown into the corner and pursued by forward Bronson again, who held onto the ball until Swan found space. With a backhand feed to the right-hand circle, Swan collected the ball and wasted no time shooting — firing one above the pad and below the glove to give the Joes their first lead of the game, 3–2.

From there, the Joes played lockdown defense. With the Hooligans’ goalie pulled, defenseman Max launched a backhand shot from his own end into the empty net to seal the game 4–2. A great match between two teams laying it all out!

Spiders vs. Stick Figures
Final: 5–2 Stick Figures

Another big-time game between two teams fighting for a playoff spot — and it was a good one! Both squads came out ready to win. No more holding back — it was do or die.

The first period was filled with fantastic goaltending from both Brad Wall of the Stick Figures and flex goalie Colin King of the Spiders. Scoring finally opened up at the 11:00 mark after an offensive-zone faceoff win by captain Jeff Beattie of the Stick Figures, who cleanly got the ball back to star defenseman Dan Gately. Gately corralled the ball onto his forehand and quickly took a wrist shot from the point that found the top right corner of the goal — a perfectly placed shot to start the scoring 1–0, which is how the first period would end.

In the second period, “The Wall” finally gave a little. Spiders forward Ryan Gurley scored on a breakaway, showing slick hands as he pulled the ball forehand to backhand to complete the play and tie the game. However, the lead wouldn’t last long. Later in the period, a seemingly harmless play developed when Thomas of the Stick Figures carried the ball in and attempted a pass that deflected off a defenseman right toward the Spiders’ goalie. Thinking he had it covered, the goalie was caught off guard when the ball stayed loose — and forward Matt Holleran found it and tapped home an easy goal to reestablish the lead at 2–1.

But as hockey often goes, it’s unpredictable. Nick Provenzano of the Spiders fed a pass across the ice to linemate Ryan Gurley, who then sent a pass into the middle to flex player Jordan Wofield. Wofield went forehand and fired a wrist shot that beat Wall glove-side, tying the game again 2–2 as the period ended.

With the stage set for an exciting finish, it all came down to the third period. Early on, the Stick Figures were grinding down the Spiders’ defense. At one point, captain Matt Leary of the Spiders was down on his knees and made a sweeping play to get the ball out of a dangerous scoring situation — but forward Cam of the Stick Figures stole it quickly and wasted no time firing a wicked wrister from the point. It found a hole through the crowd of defenders and forwards, reclaiming the lead at 3–2.

Moments later, the Sticks struck again. Off a cross-rink feed from forward Thahmid, Dan Gately took the pass, spun around, and fired in one motion, finding daylight on the blocker side to extend the lead 4–2. After a timeout from the Spiders to try to calm things down, it was too little, too late. Holleran brought the ball into the attacking zone and found a wide-open Jeff Beattie for a slot shot that beat the goalie, sealing the game 5–2. The victory gave them third place and a playoff date with the Stone Hands — ending the Spiders’ playoff hopes.

🔥 Tenacious Attackers

#1 Offensive Player of the Week – Aidan “Nighthawk” Lovett (Mustangs)
All season long, no one has been more consistent, steady, and offensively dangerous than the Nighthawk himself, Aidan Lovett. In a statement game for the Mustangs, Aidan once again set the tone of dominance for the squad as he’s done all season. Having scored once in the first period, once in the second, and once in the third, along with one assist in the first, Aidan ended the day with 3 goals, 1 assist, and 4 points total.

One particular goal stood out — in the second period, linemate Aaron Gerstel had the ball at the right-hand circle and shot it wide of the net. However, Aidan, with lightning-fast reflexes, grabbed the ball out of midair, dropped it to his feet, and shot it into the open net. It was a wildly talented play requiring perfect hand-eye coordination — just a very cool moment from a wildly talented offensive player. Nice work!

#2 Offensive Player of the Week – Joe “J-Mac” MacKenzie (Captain, Mustangs)
The second player who stood out in that same matchup was the Mustangs’ captain, J-Mac. Joey was a force as always and was difficult to contain as he scored one goal in the second off a missed shot from defenseman Tito and tallied two assists — one in the first from a slick feed to Aidan, and another in the third to linemate Higgy — for a solid 3-point game.

Joey used his speed, positioning, and hockey IQ to dominate the rink in stellar fashion, sprinting past the Stone Hands defenders and making quick work of any opposition in his way. Overall, just a great way to close out his regular season with a strong performance from the captain. Bravo, sir!

#3 Offensive Player of the Week – Matt “Swan Song” Swan (Captain, Smokey Joes)
Well, never a surprise to see this guy here. Matt Swan, the steadfast captain of the Smokey Joes, needed a bounce-back performance after last week — especially with his team’s season hanging in the balance. Some big goals were required of him, and luckily for his team, Swan came through.

He potted one goal in the second period and another in the third, which turned out to be the game-winner. Swan was sprinting all over the court, doing his best to be both defender and offensive powerhouse. Up and down, little rest — doesn’t matter to him. When a big game is needed, he’s Johnny-on-the-spot.

Swan’s teams have never missed the playoffs, and he wasn’t about to start that trend now. Along with linemate Bronson, who assisted both of Swan’s goals, the two were the key offensive factors in overcoming the tenacious Hooligans and securing a fourth-place playoff spot.

🛡️ Dynamite Defensemen

#1 Defensive Player of the Week – Tim “Tito” Burke (Mustangs)
Once again, for the second week in a row, Tim “Tito” Burke grabs the top defensive player of the week spot. Tito had an incredible game against the Stone Hands, finishing with 2 goals and 1 assist for a tasty 3-point performance.

He was airlock-tight on the defensive end as well — jumping into plays to break up chances, covering holes, and helping his teammates maintain defensive structure and discipline. Tito was a one-man, all-purpose defensive shop. With his point totals rising, Tito will look to make serious noise in his playoff matchup against the Smokey Joes this Sunday. Overall, Tito finishes the season strong!

#2 Defensive Player of the Week – Dan “The Gate” Gately (Stick Figures)
Dan “The Gate” Gately was stellar in his big matchup against the Spiders. With both teams battling for a playoff spot, everything was on the line in a match for the ages. Gately came out hot from the very beginning, scoring a beautiful goal from the blue line off a faceoff win from captain Jeff Beattie. He corralled the ball, put it on his forehand, and threw a wicked wrist shot through traffic that found the top glove-side corner to start the scoring.

Gately would later score a pivotal goal in the third to drain the momentum from the Spiders — grabbing the ball, turning 180 degrees, and firing high blocker-side all in one motion. His newly developed offensive skill set is catching goalies and defenders off guard, and all the while he continues to shut down high-danger chances and block shots. With the rate he’s developing, Gately is quickly becoming one of the most dangerous defensemen in the league.

#3 Defensive Player of the Week – Max “Clamp” Schraut (Smokey Joes)
A classic Smokey Joes player, Max “Clamp” Schraut earned his nickname for his ability to lock down defensively and log big minutes. Max seemingly never tires, never gives up, and plays a hard, physical game at all times.

He tends to play with an edge — which can often work to his advantage — giving him seemingly unlimited energy. With his large frame and long reach, it’s no wonder he’s so hard to beat defensively. Max also scored the final empty-net goal from his own end with a backhand shot to seal the game. His tenacity and energy will be tested in his playoff matchup against the best offensive squad in the league, where he’ll need the performance of a lifetime.

🥅 Grand Goaltending

#1 Goalie of the Week – Brad “The Wall” Wall (Stick Figures)
In a season full of ups and downs, highs and lows, anxiety and excitement, one of the most consistent and dependable players has been Stick Figures netminder Brad “The Wall” Wall.

Brad was spectacular once again in his game against the desperate Spiders, facing a total of 40 shots and stopping 38 of them. He finished with a sparkling save percentage of .950 and a GAA of just 2.00 — his best performance of the season.

Brad saved his best for last, shutting down multiple high-danger chances from the Spiders’ star defenseman Nick Provenzano. His calm reading of plays, intelligence, and poise between the pipes were on full display. This will be Brad’s first trip back to the playoffs in a while, and he’ll be looking to build on his already great season of play. Bravo and miraculous work, Mr. Wall!

#2 Goalie of the Week – Dan “DH” Harding (Mustangs)
Back at it again, Dan “DH” Harding played a very strong match against the only team that bested him two weeks ago in a rainy shootout.

Dan faced a total of 38 shots, stopping 36 of them for a save percentage of .947 and a GAA of 2.00. Although the start of the season was a bit rocky as he worked to find his rhythm, Harding has stabilized and is now playing at a solid, consistent level again.

With a big playoff match coming up, Harding will look to hold the fort down as he did the prior week against the Joes. Ending the regular season with a .903 SV% and a 3.59 GAA — stats that reflect being part of a defensively structured team — Harding will aim to deliver a great performance in the playoff semifinal.

#3 Goalie of the Week – Andy “Wheelhouse!” Godfrey (Smokey Joes)
Another recurring trend lately has been the ups and downs of everyone’s favorite villain, Andy “Wheelhouse!” Godfrey. Andy returned to form in a must-win matchup against the Hooligans, putting together a solid performance when it mattered most.

He gave up only two goals — one on a power play and the other off a defensive turnover in his zone — but aside from that, he was rock solid. Facing 28 shots and stopping 26, Andy posted a .929 SV% and 2.00 GAA.

When he’s on his game, Andy is solid, dependable, and tough to beat. However, inconsistency has been his ongoing battle. With no more room for error and the regular season now complete, the big question remains: how will he perform in his semifinal matchup against the high-powered Mustangs offense? That remains to be seen.

Final Standings (W-L-OTL)

  1. MUSTANGS: 9-0-1 / 19 POINTS / 80 GF / 37 GA / +43 GD (Clinched 1st Place)
  2. STONE HANDS: 6-4-0 / 12 POINTS / 50 GF / 68 GA / -18 GD (Clinched 2nd Place)
  3. STICK FIGURES: 5-4-1 / 11 POINTS / 53 GF / 45 GA / +8 GD (Clinched 3rd Seed)

🏒 Game Results

Mustangs vs Hooligans

Final: 8-1 Mustangs

From the opening ball drop to the final closing minutes, the Mustangs were once again in complete control of the match. Starting off strong in the first period, the Mustangs were all over the opposition and managed to take the lead at 1-0. With only one second left in the first period, they claimed another goal to make it 2-0 and ended the period with that lead. The Mustangs never looked back after that, extending the score even more in the second period and again in the third. Captain J-Mac of the Mustangs was an offensive force, leading the team with five goals! The Mustangs would later close out the game with a score of 8-1 and improve their record to 7-0 for the season, maintaining a firm grip on first place.

In a later interview, defenseman Aaron Gerstel of the Mustangs said, “If we play our game, we win,” and so far this season, that has proven true. Let’s see how they fare in this coming Sunday’s first- and second-place matchup. We missed it last time due to the rainout, but this week should be an interesting match between the first-place Mustangs and the second-place Stone Hands!

Spiders vs Stone Hands

Final: 11-1 Spiders

The scrappy Spiders showed they are not to be trifled with and came out with an absolutely dominant performance against the second-place Stone Hands squad. They took a large first-period lead right from the start and never looked back! The offensive explosion by the Spiders was led by star defenseman Nick Provenzano, who had three goals, followed by gritty second-liner Ryan Gurley, who also scored three goals. The team combined for a total of 11 goals while only giving up one.

Speaking of their goalie, Nick Bonofiglio posted his best performance of the season, allowing only a single goal late in the third period. Captain and coach Matt Leary was thrilled with his team’s play and had this to say post-game:

"Just a great game by the boys in a must-win situation. From the opening drop to the final buzzer, we never took our foot off the gas. Great work and hustle by Avenia, who really was a workhorse all game long. Big Nick was clutch in between the pipes when we needed him, and our defensive play and forwards were all clicking."

Indeed, the squad played probably their best game of the season and improved their record to 3-4-0, taking third place for the time being. The Spiders will look for another great performance in this Sunday’s matchup against the hungry and tenacious Stick Figures.

Stick Figures vs Smokey Joes

Final: 6-5 Stick Figures OT

This game had all the elements of a great hockey match: insane goals, great saves in key moments, some questionable calls, and an overtime conclusion. It might have been one of the most entertaining and stressful games of the season. It felt like a playoff match and had the intensity and feel of one for sure.

The first period was anybody’s game and ended 2-2 heading into the second. In the second period, the Joes claimed a small lead at 4-3, heading into a drama-filled third period. In the third, the Stick Figures rallied to tie the game from a goal by defensive player Derek Goguen, who had his best game of the season. Shortly after, Matt Swan of the Smokey Joes was fed a pass from his linemate and bombed one in from the red line that appeared to take the lead back. However, this goal was waived off as the ball had come just over the red line. Sharp eyes by linesman Nick Provenzano caught it, and it was later confirmed via video review.

It didn’t matter, though, as about a minute later, the Joes scored again to reclaim the lead at 4-3 in the third. But again, the Stick Figures didn’t go down. They ground their way back with another goal to tie it at 4-4 from forward Thahmid. Again, the Joes responded with a goal from Captain Matt Swan, taking a 5-4 lead with only three minutes left.

In the final minute, the Stick Figures pressed into the attacking zone. The ball was loose in the crease and eventually knocked free, and forward Thomas Schindler tapped it into the net to seemingly tie it at 5-5. However, the whistle had blown—did the goal count? Head official Dan Harding ruled it a good goal while the Joes looked on in stunned fashion, sending the game to overtime.

In overtime, the Joes came out hot, and goaltender Brad Wall made pivotal saves to keep it tied. With only two minutes left in OT, defenseman Derek Goguen came around the net short side, where the goalie was not hugging the post, and put it home to give the Stick Figures the much-needed 6-5 win.

Later, Dan Harding explained the fifth Stick Figures goal:

"In the moment, I had a good view of the crease. The ball was loose, and I saw Matt Swan covering it with his hand. I initially blew the whistle for a Stick Figures penalty shot, but at the same time, the ball crossed the goal line. I went with my gut instincts and called it a good goal. After reviewing the footage, I could see the ball had not fully crossed the line before my whistle. For that, I apologize to the Joes. I understand their frustration, but both teams played a great match, and I tried to make the correct call in the moment. I’ll try to be better going forward."

🔥 Offensive Powerplants

#1 Offensive Player of the Week – Matt Avenia (Spiders)
Avenia was a monster all game long and a generator of offensive attack from the moment the ball dropped onto the rink. He was all over Stone Hands players with both forecheck and backcheck pressure. With constant harassment, Avenia was able to convert multiple opportunities with two goals and set up teammates three times for three assists, totaling five points in the match. Without a doubt, it was Matt’s best game of the season. His teammate Tim “The Moth” Shyshpar said:

"Matt’s been an incredible player this season. Honestly, he’s been one of our top guys all year long, and we depend on that for our team’s success. He is an essential backbone in our game plan every week."

Avenia will look to keep his winning ways going in this Sunday’s matchup against the deadly and hungry Stick Figures, who are fighting tooth and nail for a playoff spot.

#2 Offensive Player of the Week – Matt “Swan Song” Swan (Smokey Joes Captain)
Captain Swan was devoted, dedicated, and committed to his team all last Sunday. His leadership and effort kept the game within striking distance all game long. Despite a low shot count of only 20 shots in three periods plus overtime, Swan put up five points with three goals and two assists. Those numbers are incredible considering the low shot total.

Despite some shaky officiating, Swan didn’t let it discourage him. He remained focused on the play in front of him, like a true leader. Even with a minor injury in the third period, and accusations from the opposition of faking it, Swan stayed productive and kept his squad on track. Missing his linemate Ryan Doherty, who has been battling a lingering injury all season, Swan still led by example. Though they came up short in OT, the Joes managed to hang onto a point and maintain playoff positioning. They will look to build momentum this Sunday against a struggling Hooligans team needing a win to keep playoff hopes alive.

#3 Offensive Player of the Week – Joe “J-Mac” MacKenzie (Mustangs Captain)
Oh captain, my captain, were the words of the Mustangs as the battle of the Macs took place on Sunday morning. However, J-Mac proved victorious, as the Mustangs’ young leader led an explosive offensive performance with five goals in the game—the most he’s scored this season!

Typically in the top five of points, J-Mac has taken a more conservative role this season, focusing on leadership first and scoring second. Being a new captain naturally slows down production, but J-Mac has remained very productive with the help of his linemates Aiden and Connolly. He is always a scoring threat, and Sunday was proof. He will look to keep the pace rolling in next week’s matchup against the Stone Hands, which should be a great clash between two of the league’s top teams.

🛡️ Defensive Dynamos

#1 Defensive Player of the Week – Nick Provenzano (Spiders)
New to the defensive role yet thriving in the spot, Nick Provenzano has been a hidden gem in the Spiders’ defensive scheme all season long! Usually a forward, Captain Matt Leary decided to slot Nick in on defense, and it’s worked out effectively. Nick went on a run last Sunday, racking up a strong five-point performance with three goals and two assists.

With Nick’s offensive awareness as a defenseman, he’s able to read the play as it develops and set up his linemates with refined precision and intelligence. His hockey IQ has translated into assists, goals, and smart defensive breakups throughout the season. He knows exactly when to jump into a play and when to fall back. The Spiders’ success has heavily depended on Nick’s ability to play as a solid two-way defender, using his powerful shot from the point and threading passes into the zone to set up scoring chances.

His next matchup against the very persistent and fast Stick Figures squad will test his ability to get back into position while still producing offensively. It’ll be a good test to see if he can continue balancing his scoring touch with solid defensive play.

#2 Defensive Player of the Week – Derek “The Golem” Goguen (Stick Figures)
Derek was a massive presence in the Stick Figures’ game last Sunday against the powerful Smokey Joes. His ability and gameplay were on full display with an incredible three-point performance — not one, not two, but three goals in his matchup! And all three were massive. Derek scored once in the first period and again in the second, both crucial goals that kept the pressure up on the Joes.

He was also brilliant defensively, breaking up multiple high-danger chances from Swan and Bronson. Derek was sacrificing the body, forechecking aggressively, and playing smart, poised hockey all game long. His biggest moment came in overtime, though — battling for the ball behind the opposing net, wrapping around to the left-hand side, and firing the ball into an opening on the goalie’s short side to secure the game-winning goal in overtime!

It was one of Goguen’s best games of the season and possibly his SSBHL career. His captain, Jeff Beattie, was asked after the game about his linemate Derek and said:

"In my honest opinion, Derek’s been a nail gun all year but just hasn’t found the back of the net — and then his wife shows up to watch him play, and he gets a hat trick! Can’t even make that up, lmao. It’s the WAGs, 100% (wives and girlfriends)."

#3 Defensive Player of the Week – Matt Leary (Spiders Captain)
In a game that demanded leadership and stalwart defensive play, there are few players who can hold the line like Matt Leary, captain of the stingy Spiders squad. Leary has always been one of the toughest players to go up against. His incredible defensive IQ makes it seem like he can see into the future — anticipating moves and positioning himself perfectly to counter any offensive scheme thrown his way.

Despite some struggles putting up points this season, Leary still contributes elite defensive play, and his leadership keeps his team on course. With multiple blocked shots, high-danger breakups, and great communication with his teammates, the Stone Hands’ top players — including Captain Steve — could not find any rhythm offensively, being limited to just one goal all game.

His teammate Tim Shyshpar later said, “Leary is just an impossible player to go up against. He puts you on an island with no hope of generating any offense. He’s such a smart player, and I love playing with him this season — it’s been a pleasure all year long.”

Leary’s dependable defensive strategy will be tested again this week in his matchup against the desperate and hungry Stick Figures, who are fighting to claw their way into a playoff position.

🥅 Grand Goaltending

#1 Goalie of the Week – Nick Bonofiglio (Spiders)
Big Nick was solid in his match against the Stone Hands, facing a grand total of 37 shots on net and stopping all but one. He finished with an outstanding 1.00 GAA and a .973 save percentage — his best game of the season!

Nick looked back to his old self — calm, composed, and sharp as ever in net. Well-positioned and confident, he made several great stops against some of the Stone Hands’ best players, including Steve Wilde and Howard Troughton. It’s been an up-and-down season for the Spiders’ goaltender, but neither his team nor anyone else is worried. Nick knows how to win and how to handle big games — he’s got a Cup under his belt from last season, after all.

The Spiders are going to need him at his best in the coming weeks to secure that playoff spot once and for all.

#2 Goalie of the Week – Dan Harding (Mustangs)
Harding finally put together a strong game after struggling to find consistency for most of the season. Facing 33 shots and stopping 32 of them, he held a 1.00 GAA and a .970 save percentage.

The Mustangs have been a powerhouse all season long, meaning Harding hasn’t been called upon to deliver massive performances too often — but that will change as we get closer to postseason play. Teams will find ways to generate offense against the Mustangs, and when they do, Harding will need to be ready to respond.

His play has been solid enough so far, but he’ll need to elevate his game when the shots start coming fast and heavy. This coming Sunday’s matchup against the second-place Stone Hands will be a great test — a true showdown of the season.

🎥 Notes and Updates

Just one more thing to touch on — the videos from last week got pretty messed up due to the GoPro constantly overheating and having multiple errors. I don’t know if I have much usable footage from the first two games as a result. The only decent game footage was from the last one.

Because of that, I may not bother doing full Week 7 videos. I’ll go through what I have and see if anything’s worth posting — maybe I’ll do a highlight reel instead, all clumped together. Still deciding what to do, so stay tuned for that. Hopefully, we’ll get back on track for videos in Week 8.

You’ll also notice I missed the weekly write-up last week. I was very busy with work, had a wedding to attend Friday, a golf tournament Saturday, and then games Sunday — I simply ran out of time. Sorry about that! Hopefully, I don’t miss any more going forward. 😊

Thank you, and have a great rest of the week!

5th week Fall 2025 SSBHL Top Players of the week, Halfway Point!!!!

5th week Fall 2025 SSBHL Top Players of the week, Halfway Point!!!!

Good afternoon, SSBHL community!

Week 5 is in the books, and what a wild Sunday it was! We saw one team finally break into the win column, another stay undefeated, and a heavyweight clash that handed Stone Hands their first loss of the season. With the playoff picture slowly forming, every game and every shift is starting to matter that much more.

Let’s take a look at the action:

🏒 Game Results

Stick Figures vs. Hooligans
Final: 6–2 Stick Figures
After weeks of close calls and frustrating bounces, Stick Figures finally put it all together and notched their first win of the season. Their offense clicked, their defense tightened up, and Brad Wall was rock solid between the pipes. It wasn’t just a win — it was a statement that this squad isn’t going anywhere.

Mustangs vs. Spiders
Final: 7–5 Mustangs
Another game, another Mustangs victory. This team just keeps finding ways to win, moving to a perfect 5–0 on the season. The Spiders battled hard and kept it close, but the Mustangs’ depth and relentless attack proved too much in the end. Every week, they look more and more like the team to beat.

Smokey Joes vs. Stone Hands
Final: 11–3 Smokey Joes
Talk about a statement game. Smokey Joes came in locked and loaded, and they unleashed a dominant offensive performance that snapped Stone Hands’ undefeated streak. Swan and company were on fire, and new addition Andy Godfrey made his debut in net with a performance that gave the Joes even more confidence. This one was never in doubt — the Joes meant business.

🔥 Offensive Tenacity

#1 Offensive Player of the Week – Matt “Swan Song” Swan (Smokey Joes Captain)
Swan was electric from the very first shift, putting on an offensive masterclass that powered his team to their biggest win of the year. He piled up 8 points (4 goals, 4 assists), single-handedly driving the Joes’ offense and proving why he’s one of the most dangerous players in the league. Whether he was finishing chances with his trademark speed and quick feet, or setting up teammates with pinpoint passing, Swan was unstoppable. It wasn’t just the numbers — it was the way he controlled the flow of the game. Stone Hands had no answer for his speed, vision, and leadership.

#2 Offensive Player of the Week – Ryan “Mr Lahey” Doherty (Smokey Joes)
Linemate chemistry can make or break a team, and Ryan Doherty’s connection with Swan was on full display Sunday. The two looked like they didn’t miss a beat from Ryan’s time off, feeding off each other and keeping Stone Hands’ defense scrambling. Doherty chipped in 2 goals and 2 assists, but what stood out was his positioning — always finding the soft spots, always ready to finish. He didn’t just ride Swan’s coattails — he created chances of his own, making him the perfect one-two punch in the Joes’ offensive explosion.

#3 Offensive Player of the Week – Tim” Moth” Shyshpar (Spiders)
The Spiders may have fallen short against the undefeated Mustangs, but Shyshpar gave his team every chance to hang around. With 3 goals and an assist, he showed off his knack for timely scoring and his ability to seize momentum. One of his tallies came at a crucial point when the Spiders were closing the gap, a reminder that he’s always a threat when the puck is on his stick. Even in defeat, Shyshpar’s performance was a bright spot and a sign that the Spiders can go toe-to-toe with the league’s best.

🛡️ Defensive Dynamos

#1 Defensive Player of the Week – Aaron Gerstel (Mustangs)
If you want to beat the Mustangs, you’ll need to solve more than just their forwards — and Gerstel made sure of that on Sunday. He was phenomenal in his own zone, breaking up multiple high-danger chances and shutting down the Spiders’ rushes before they could develop. His breakout passes were crisp, clean, and perfectly timed, springboarding his teammates into transition and leading directly to scoring opportunities. With 3 assists to his name as well, Gerstel was the complete package: reliable defender, smooth distributor, and quiet backbone of the Mustangs’ undefeated run.

#2 Defensive Player of the Week – Nick Provenzano (Spiders)
Sometimes, the best defensive players are the ones who turn defense into offense — and Provenzano did just that. His positioning and awareness were fantastic all game long, and he didn’t just stop plays, he created them. With 1 goal and 2 assists, he contributed on both ends of the rink and was a big reason the Spiders pushed the Mustangs as hard as they did. Provenzano was everywhere, hounding puck carriers one moment and jumping up into the play the next.

#3 Defensive Player of the Week – Matt Connolly (Mustangs)
Connolly was superb in Last Sundays match Vs the Spiders! Connolly was all over the Forwards of the Spiders, making every play a nightmare to try and get offensive pressure going. Connolly was also able to score 2 very important goals, one that came to start the game off getting the Mustangs up early at 1-0. And the other in the 3rd which extended the lead to 3-1, but that goal was a highlight reel as he rushed into the offensive zone, deked out Spiders Defender Nick Provanzano, and out lasted the goalie to slide home a beautiful goal! Overall fantastic game and this season Connolly has been the picture of consistency at the blue line!

🥅 Grand Goaltending

#1 Goalie of the Week – Andy Godfrey (Smokey Joes)
Talk about a debut! After being dealt in a blockbuster trade, Godfrey swapped his forward stick for goalie pads and looked like a natural. Facing a barrage of 45 shots, he turned away 42 of them for a sparkling .933 save percentage and a 3.00 GAA. His calmness under pressure was remarkable, especially considering it was his first game in net for the Joes. Time after time, he came up big, giving his team the confidence to attack freely. If this is any sign of what’s to come, the Smokey Joes may have found the missing piece they’ve been searching for.

#2 Goalie of the Week – Brad “Stone Wall” Wall (Stick Figures)
Consistency has been the story of Brad Wall’s season, and once again he was rock solid. Facing 25 shots, he stopped 23 of them (.920 SV%, 2.00 GAA) to backstop Stick Figures to their first win of the season. He wasn’t just making routine saves — he came up huge in key moments, slamming the door on the Hooligans when they tried to claw back. Wall’s steady play gave his teammates confidence to press offensively, and it paid off in the form of a convincing 6–2 victory.

#3 Goalie of the Week – Manny DeBettencourt (Hooligans)
Manny faced a heavy workload again, turning aside 31 of 36 shots (.861 SV%, 5.10 GAA). While the scoreline didn’t go the Hooligans’ way, Manny kept things respectable with several highlight saves that stopped the game from slipping away early. His ability to stay locked in despite constant pressure is a testament to his competitive drive. Week after week, he’s proving to be a backbone for his team, and his effort never wavers.

Honorable Mentions & Extra Credit

Cam MacKenzie (Stick Figures)
Fresh off the trade, Cam wasted no time proving his worth. He tallied a goal while playing shutdown defense against none other than his brother and Hooligans’ captain, B-Mack. His ability to adapt quickly to his new squad and keep pace with one of the league’s toughest forwards deserves recognition.

Jeff Beattie (Stick Figures Captain)
The captain led by example, starting the game with strong penalty-killing shifts that set the tone defensively. Beattie also chipped in offensively, notching a goal and an assist. A balanced, gritty performance that showed why he wears the “C.”

Bronson Zawaduk (Smokey Joes)
What a milestone moment — Bronson buried his first career hat trick in style! His three goals were a big piece of the Joes’ dominant 11–3 win over the Stone Hands. You could feel the energy every time he touched the ball. A night to remember for him and a sign of more to come.

4th Week Fall 2025 SSBHL Top Players of the week!

SSBHL Weekly High Performers – Week 4 Recap

Good afternoon, SSBHL community!

Hope everyone’s been having a great week so far. First off, apologies for the delay in this week’s write-up — it’s been a busy one work-wise, but no more excuses! We’re now four weeks into the season and already nearing the halfway point. Time to dig deep and give it everything you’ve got.

With playoff pushes starting to take shape, let’s remember: as competitive as things get out there, it’s important to stay respectful. Be kind to your teammates and opponents alike. Keep it competitive, but keep it fun — after all, this is an adult rec league, not the Stanley Cup Finals. Let’s battle hard but leave the drama at the door.

🚨 Recent Trade Alert

  • Smokey Joes receive: F Andy Godfrey (from Stick Figures)

  • Stick Figures receive: F Cam MacKenzie (from Smokey Joes)

🔥 Offensive Tenacity

#1 Offensive Player of the Week – Aidan “Nighthawk” Lovett (Mustangs)
There are great games, and then there are games that make people stop and shake their heads in disbelief — Aidan “Nighthawk” Lovett had one of those. In the Mustangs’ tilt against Smokey Joes, Nighthawk was a one-man wrecking crew, finishing with 8 points (3 goals, 5 assists). That’s right — he had his hand in 8 of the 9 goals his team scored. When you’re contributing on nearly every goal your team puts up, that’s dominance on another level.

What made his performance so special wasn’t just the raw points — it was the way he earned them. He showcased a perfect blend of patience, vision, and finishing ability. Whether he was setting up teammates with tape-to-tape passes or burying chances himself, Lovett controlled the pace of play. Defenders simply couldn’t contain him, and the Joes’ goalie must have felt like he was facing three different players all wearing #Nighthawk. Performances like that don’t just win games — they set the tone for an entire season.

#2 Offensive Player of the Week – Joe “J-Mac” MacKenzie (Mustangs Captain)
The Mustangs didn’t stop at just one highlight reel performance. Their captain, Joe “J-Mac” MacKenzie, proved once again why he’s one of the most dangerous and respected players in the league. J-Mac racked up 5 points (2 goals, 3 assists), but beyond the numbers, his game showed maturity and evolution. Known for years as a pure scorer, he’s now rounding out his game into that rare two-way forward who can burn you offensively while also breaking up plays and driving possession the other way.

On the rink, J-Mac looked unstoppable — cutting through defenses with speed and power, creating mismatches, and forcing defenders into bad positions. One of his goals came on a rush where he bulldozed through two defenders and still managed to tuck it home. That’s captain material right there: not just talking the talk, but showing his squad how it’s done. With the Spiders looming this week, expect J-Mac to keep leading from the front as the Mustangs push for a top seed.

#3 Offensive Player of the Week – Matt Swan (Smokey Joes Captain)
Even in a loss, Matt Swan made sure his presence was felt in a big way. Swan dropped 4 points (3 goals, 1 assist) against the Mustangs, and more importantly, he gave his team belief that they could hang with one of the league’s best. His second-period goal was the kind of highlight that sticks in people’s memories: weaving through defenders and ripping a perfectly placed snipe to tie things at 2–2. The rink went quiet for a second before the crowd realized what they had just witnessed.

Swan has always been the type of captain who leads by example, and this game was no different. He battled for pucks, never quit on plays, and showed why he’s considered one of the league’s premier goal scorers. With the trade deadline just behind us and some roster changes in play, Swan looks poised to push his team into the win column in their matchup against Stone Hands. When you’ve got a captain producing like this, the rest of the squad can’t help but follow.

🛡️ Defensive Dynamos

#1 Defensive Player of the Week – Josh Charmatz (Hooligans)
Sometimes defense is about more than blocked shots or takeaways — it’s about leadership. With Captain B-Mack out, Josh Charmatz stepped into the role of game-day captain, and he didn’t just wear the “C,” he embodied it. Josh was a steady presence on the rink, directing traffic, keeping his teammates composed, and shutting down some of the Spiders’ most dangerous looks.

Early in the game, Hooligans built a 4–0 lead, but when the Spiders clawed back to make it 4–3, that’s when Josh’s value truly showed. He absorbed pressure, broke up passes, and made sure the game didn’t spiral away from his team. Defensively, he was rock solid — blocking shots, closing gaps, and always in the right place at the right time. But it was his ability to lead under pressure that truly earned him the top defensive honors this week.

#2 Defensive Player of the Week – Eric “Kinger” (Stone Hands)
You know you’ve had a good defensive game when the opposing forwards leave the rink muttering your name under their breath. That’s exactly the kind of night Kinger had for Stone Hands. A relentless pest from puck drop to final whistle, he gave Stick Figures’ forwards zero breathing room. Whether it was tying up sticks, poking pucks loose, or simply wearing players down shift after shift, Kinger made life miserable for anyone trying to generate offense.

But he wasn’t just shutting things down — he contributed offensively too, tallying 2 assists that proved critical in such a close contest. It’s that balance of grit and production that makes him such a valuable piece of the Stone Hands lineup. Dependable, persistent, and flat-out aggravating to play against — that’s Kinger in a nutshell.

#3 Defensive Player of the Week – Dan Gately (Stick Figures)
Some players look like they’re playing with an extra gear, and this week, Dan Gately was one of them. His stamina and speed were unreal — constantly sprinting up and down the rink, transitioning from defense to offense in a flash. One moment he’s blocking a dangerous chance in his own zone, and before you blink, he’s setting up a play at the other end. His hustle resulted in 2 assists, but the real story was how much ground he covered and how disruptive he was on both sides of the rink.

Sure, he had a couple unlucky bounces go against him, but that didn’t stop him from being one of the most influential players on the rink. For Stick Figures to keep pace in this league, Gately’s relentless energy and two-way play are going to be crucial.

🥅 Grand Goaltending

#1 Goalie of the Week – Jake “Le Gant” Deehan (Stone Hands)
Jake Deehan wasn’t just good — he was flat-out spectacular. Facing 30 shots, he stopped 28 of them, posting a .933 save percentage and a 2.00 GAA. The nickname “Le Gant” (The Glove) couldn’t have been more fitting, as he flashed leather all night long with highlight-reel glove saves that left shooters shaking their heads.

But it wasn’t just the flashy stops — it was the fundamentals. His positioning was perfect, his movement was crisp, and he looked in control every single shift. On more than one occasion, he robbed Stick Figures’ captain with sprawling leg saves that seemed to defy physics. When your goalie is locked in like this, it lifts the entire team, and Jake’s performance was the kind that can swing momentum for an entire season.

#2 Goalie of the Week – Brad “Stone Wall” Wall (Stick Figures)
When you face 48 shots in a single game and still post a .917 save percentage, you’ve earned your nickname. Brad “Stone Wall” Wall was under siege all night, but he stood tall, turning away 44 shots. He kept Stick Figures in it against a relentless attack, shutting down some of the league’s top scorers in Wilde, Coleman, and Merrick.

Though the win slipped away, it was no fault of Brad’s — in fact, without him, it could have been a blowout. His revival season continues to impress, and performances like this prove that Stick Figures can never be counted out when he’s between the pipes.

#3 Goalie of the Week – Manny DeBettencourt (Hooligans)
Manny faced 35 shots and turned aside 32 of them, finishing with a .914 save percentage and a 3.00 GAA. But the numbers only tell part of the story. Time and time again, when the Hooligans were hemmed in their zone and looked on the verge of breaking, Manny came up with the saves that kept them alive.

His ability to stay calm under pressure and make unorthodox but effective stops gave his team the stability they needed. He’s been quietly one of the most consistent goalies in the league, and with the best save percentage in the league right now, Manny’s reminding everyone that goaltending is the backbone of championship teams.

Lost of offense this week! we are officially 30% done with the season, Still lots of time left to flip the script if you are struggling or to add onto an already successful season!

With that said, Lets embark onto the Top performances of the week!

Offensive Engines of the Week

#1 Offensive Player of the Week – Matt “Swan Song” Swan (Smokey Joes, Captain)
When the Smokey Joes need a spark, their captain always seems to rise to the occasion. Matt “Swan Song” Swan put on a clinic this week, piling up 5 goals and 3 assists for 8 points in a statement 10–6 win over the Stick Figures. His highlight moment came when he evened the score at 2–2 with a jaw-dropping individual effort: winning a faceoff clean, blowing past the entire defense, and finishing on a forehand–backhand breakaway that brought the bench to its feet. Swan was an unstoppable engine all night long—leading by example and reminding everyone why he’s one of the league’s most feared scorers.

#2 Offensive Player of the Week – Aidan “nighthawk” Lovett (Mustangs)
Aidan “Nighthawk” Lovett lived up to his nickname this week, dealing the Hooligans one blow after another in the Mustangs’ 9–4 victory. Lovett tallied 2 goals and 4 assists for 6 points, but his dagger came with just 36 seconds left in the first period. Pressuring the defense, he buried a clutch goal to make it 3–0 heading into the second—completely flipping the game’s momentum in his team’s favor. From there, Nighthawk kept dealing, carving up the defense with passes and sustained pressure. A true tone-setter, his all-around performance secures him the #2 offensive slot.

#3 Offensive Player of the Week – Matt Avenia (Spiders)
Even in defeat, Matt Avenia showed no signs of slowing down, powering through with one of his best games to date. Logging 2 goals and 3 assists for 5 points in a 5–7 loss to the Stone Hands, Avenia nearly flipped the script in the third period with a momentum-shifting power play goal that brought his team within striking distance. Avenia was barreling through the defense all night, creating chances and dragging the Spiders back into the fight. It was a standout performance that locks him in as this week’s #3 offensive force.

Top Tier Defensive Dynamos

Top Defensive Player of the Week – Brendan “Bulldog” Merrick (Stone Hands)
Few players embody grit like Brendan “Bulldog” Merrick. In the Stone Hands’ 7–5 win over the Spiders, Merrick was everywhere—chipping in a goal and an assist while being an absolute menace defensively. He ran down every loose ball, threw himself in front of shots, and hounded opposing forwards with relentless forechecking. The Bulldog never stopped barking, and his nonstop motor was the backbone of the Stone Hands’ gritty victory, cementing him as this week’s top defensive dynamo.

#2 Defensive Player of the Week – Matt Connolly (Mustangs)
Matt Connolly earns his spot at #2 thanks to his incredible two-way effort in the Mustangs’ 9–4 win. With his team short on bodies, Connolly logged marathon shifts and still managed to deliver on both ends of the rink. His ability to transition from defense to offense in a heartbeat was on full display, capped off by a goal and an assist to go with his defensive presence. Connolly’s endurance and versatility proved invaluable, making him one of the night’s true workhorses.

#3 Defensive Player of the Week – Matt Leary (Spiders, Captain)
Sometimes it’s not about the scoreboard—it’s about the effort behind it. Matt “Leary gave everything he had in the Spiders’ 5–7 loss to the Stone Hands. Missing key teammates, Leary balanced his lines, logged heavy minutes, and still found a way to chip in an assist while leading by example. He worked his tail off shift after shift, showing grit and determination that went far beyond the stat sheet. Captain Leary embodied leadership under pressure, securing him the #3 defensive nod.

Stingy Goaltending

#1 Goalie of the Week – Nick “Big Nick” Bonofiglio (Spiders)
It was a historic night in net for Nick “Big Nick” Bonofiglio, who faced the heaviest shot total of the season—60 rockets fired his way. Undeterred, Big Nick turned aside 54 of them for a jaw-dropping .900 save percentage. Though the Spiders ultimately fell 5–7, Bonofiglio’s resilience and composure under an avalanche of shots was nothing short of remarkable. Calm, collected, and constantly bailing out his squad, Big Nick showed why he’s one of the league’s toughest backstops.

#2 Goalie of the Week – Dan Harding (Mustangs)
Dan  Harding lived up to his name in the Mustangs’ 9–4 win over the Hooligans. Facing 30 shots, he calmly turned aside 26, finishing with a .867 save percentage. Harding didn’t need to be flashy—just rock solid. He was calm under pressure, consistent in his positioning, and gave his team the stability they needed to play free and fast in front of him. A steady, reliable effort secures him the #2 goalie spot this week.

#3 Goalie of the Week – Jake Deehan (Stone Hands)
Jake “Glove” Deehan rounds out the goalie rankings with a fiery performance in the Stone Hands’ 7–5 win. Facing 32 shots, Deehan stopped 27 for a .844 save percentage, but it was his aggressive style and one highlight save that had everyone buzzing. In the second period, he flashed the leather with a lightning-quick glove save that robbed a sure goal and swung momentum squarely in his team’s favor. The  mix of aggression and flair earns him the #3 goaltending nod.

2nd Week, Fall 2025 SSBHL Top Players of the Week!

Good Morning SSBHL, Community!

I apologize for the delay on this; However, I’ve had less pleasant league issues taking up my time in place of doing the fun things that we as a community love. I do just want to touch base on a few things before we get into the good stuff.

Respect for your opponent/refs: This one a in my opinion a no brainer, however from time-to-time things happen, tempers flare, the competitiveness of a game gets the better of us. I got it. However, when you let your emotions rule you and you act on emotion, it never goes well. If you ever feel like you are spiraling with emotions and getting heated in the moment, please, do us and yourself a favor and go to the bench and take a big breath of fresh air and calm down before you go back onto the rink. If you think someone is ruining the game and talking smack and getting under your skin. Feel free to message me about it after the game and I or one of our admins will handle it, I give you, my word. Don’t take it into your own hands, it’s NEVER the answer. Trust me. We are just trying to get out of the house, get some good exercise in, and play. We need to sometimes remember this is a recreation league and not the NHL. Just, Relax out their guys, seriously…. I get it, the refs miss calls, it’s going to happen. You need to consider; they are unpaid and doing this as a MASSIVE favor for us to keep things going! Treat them with respect! They do not have to put up with being screamed and yelled at. It’s unacceptable to lose your cool on them at any time. They 100% have the right to ring you up with a misconduct penalty if you talk back to them In a negative manner. Let’s all remember to be kind to one another out there, it’s a hard world from day to day, lets keep Sunday hockey a safe and fun environment for everyone going forward the rest of the season. No more drama please, let’s turn the page on the nonsense and start having fun again.

TLDR Version: Stop Being an ass lol, if you have issues with a player or ref, come to me about it and we can chat, I promise.

Ok, Rant over. Let’s Get back to our top performers of the week

Offensive Engines of the week

#1 Top Offensive Player of the Week: Brendan “B-Mack” MacKenzie

When it comes to making an impact, few players have ever put on a performance like Brendan MacKenzie did this week. Known around the league as “B-Mack,” the Hooligans’ captain was an unstoppable force from the opening faceoff to the final whistle against the Stone Hands’ stingy defense.

B-Mack exploded for 5 goals and 1 assist, racking up an incredible 6 points—his highest single-game output in league history. Even more impressive, he factored in on every single Hooligans goal, scoring all but one himself.

Despite the Hooligans falling just short in an 8–6 loss, it was clear there wasn’t much more their captain could do. He was all over the rink, creating chances, finishing plays, and keeping his team in the fight until the very end.

This was a monster performance by B-Mack, cementing his spot as our Top Offensive Player of the Week.

#2 Offensive Player of the Week: Matt Connolly – Mustangs

When the Mustangs needed a spark, Matt Connolly lit the fire. Facing the Stick Figures last Sunday, the Mustangs found themselves in a deep hole, trailing 5–1 late in the second period. With time winding down, Connolly gave his team life, burying one with just seconds left to close the gap to 5–2 and shift the momentum heading into the third.

From there, Connolly went to work. Early in the third, he was Johnny-on-the-spot again, cashing in a rebound to pull the Mustangs within two. Moments later, he set up Aaron Gerstel with a shot from the point that created the perfect rebound, cutting the deficit to just one. The comeback was officially on.

After the Mustangs tied it late to force overtime, Connolly capped off his masterclass performance with a perfect cross-crease feed to captain J-Mac, who buried the game-winner just 20 seconds into OT. Connolly finished the night with 2 goals and 2 assists, directly fueling one of the biggest comebacks of the season.

Matt was the engine of consistency and the driving force behind a monumental win for the Mustangs, making him a clear choice for our #2 Offensive Player of the Week.

#3 Offensive Player of the Week: Matt Holleran – Stick Figures

Matt Holleran put together a complete two-way performance for the Stick Figures in their battle with the Mustangs, showcasing grit, playmaking, and offensive touch. He finished the game with 1 goal and 3 assists for 4 points, proving to be one of the most impactful players on the floor—even though the Stick Figures fell just short in overtime.

Holleran’s night started with a key response goal, deflecting one home to tie the game 1–1 and swing the momentum back in his team’s favor. Not long after, he circled the net with possession and found an open Dan Gately, who buried the go-ahead goal to give the Stick Figures the 2–1 lead.

In the second period, Holleran made one of the game’s defining hustle plays—blocking a Mustangs point shot, scooping up the loose ball, and threading a perfect pass to a streaking Thomas, who finished on a breakaway to stretch the lead to 5–1.

Though the Stick Figures ultimately couldn’t hold on, dropping the game in overtime, Holleran’s effort was undeniable. His mix of defensive responsibility and offensive production kept his team in it until the end, earning him a well-deserved spot as our #3 Offensive Player of the Week.

Top Tier Defensive Dynamos

Top Defensive Player of the Week – Nick Provenzano (Spiders)

Nick Provenzano earns this week’s top defensive honor with an absolutely electric performance from the blue line. Known as an offensive-minded defenseman, Nick stepped up in a big way, notching 3 goals and 1 assist to help carry the Spiders in their thrilling matchup against the Smokey Joes.

His first goal was one for the highlight reel—though not in the traditional sense. Firing from the blue line, Nick banked a shot off the boards behind the net that ricocheted off the goalie’s skate and somehow trickled in, cutting the Joes’ lead to 4–3. Later in the second period, with his team trailing 5–3, Nick launched a booming slap shot from behind his own faceoff dots. The rocket traveled the full length of the floor with pinpoint precision, sneaking past the opposing goalie to bring the Spiders within one.

In the third, with the game tied 5–5, Nick showcased his persistence and skill. Driving the play from his own end, he fired a quick wrist shot that was initially stopped, but when the rebound popped into the air, Nick batted it out of midair and into the net to give the Spiders a 6–5 lead. Though the Smokey Joes would tie the game again, Nick wasn’t finished. With the clock winding down, he made a slick feed from the blue line to linemate Ryan Gurly, who buried the game-winner to seal the Spiders’ victory.

Overall, it was a powerhouse performance from Provenzano, whose offensive flair and veteran presence on the back end proved invaluable. A well-earned nod as this week’s Top Defensive Player.

#2 Defensive Player of the Week – Aaron Gerstel (Mustangs)

Sometimes it’s not how you start—it’s how you finish. For Aaron Gerstel of the Mustangs, that couldn’t have been more true in his matchup against the Stick Figures. Early in the game, Aaron had a tough moment when an unlucky deflection off his stick found its way into his own net to open the scoring. Frustrated, he admitted to his goalie, “I changed the momentum in this game, I swung it in their favor… but that also means I can swing it back our way.”

And swing it back he did.

With the Mustangs trailing 5–2 in the third, Aaron ripped a wrist shot from the point that created a perfect rebound for linemate Matt Connolly, who buried it to cut the lead to 5–3. A few shifts later, Connolly returned the favor—firing from the point as Aaron crashed in and finished off the play himself, narrowing the gap to 5–4.

But Aaron’s biggest contribution came in the final minutes. With just 1:42 left, he battled hard behind his own net against a Stick Figures forward, came away with the ball, and quickly moved it up to captain J-Mac. The Mustangs’ leader blasted home a slap shot from center, tying the game 5–5 and sending it to overtime. The Mustangs would go on to complete the comeback and secure the win.

Gerstel finished the night with 1 goal and 2 assists for 3 points—more importantly, he lived up to his own words by turning the tide of the game back in his team’s favor. A gritty, resilient performance that earns him this week’s #2 Defensive Player of the Week.

#3 Defensive Player of the Week – Timmy “Tito” Burke (Mustangs)

Timmy “Tito” Burke was his usual rock-solid self on the blue line, showing why he’s one of the most dependable and intelligent defenders in the league. Poised, calm under pressure, and a veteran presence every shift, Tito’s consistency was a key factor in the Mustangs’ thrilling comeback against the Stick Figures.

Tito got things started early, converting a rebound off his backhand to put the Mustangs ahead 1–0. Later, with the team trailing 5–1 in the dying seconds of the second period, Tito fired a strong shot from the blue line that created a perfect rebound for linemate Matt Connolly to put home, helping swing momentum back in the Mustangs’ favor.

In overtime, with the game tied 5–5, Tito continued to show his defensive intelligence. Though he didn’t get a point on the play, he broke up a Stick Figures breakout and quickly transitioned the puck to set up a 2-on-1, which led to the game-winning goal, giving the Mustangs a 6–5 victory.

Beyond the points, Tito’s leadership and guidance were invaluable. Acting like a second captain on the ice, he advised linemates, positioned teammates effectively, and calmly directed play during critical moments. His intelligence and steady presence were crucial to the Mustangs’ comeback and ultimately securing the win. Tito finished with 2 points (1 goal, 1 assist) and, more importantly, left his mark as a true leader on the rink.

Stingy Goaltending

#1 Goalie of the Week – Brad Wall (Stick Figures)

Brad Wall truly lived up to his name this week, standing tall as an unmovable wall for the Stick Figures. In their matchup against the Mustangs, Brad faced a relentless offensive onslaught, dealing with a total of 42 shots, including numerous high-danger scoring chances.

In the first period, Brad was nothing short of spectacular—stopping all but one shot while navigating a heavy barrage of dangerous opportunities. The second period was more of the same, as Wall remained poised and calm under constant pressure, showcasing excellent positional awareness and reading the play with precision to keep his team in the game.

Overall, Brad finished with 36 saves on 42 shots, earning the top save percentage of the week at .857 and a GAA of 5.88. He was particularly impressive in key moments, denying two breakaways from Mustangs captain J-Mac and frustrating their offense throughout the matchup.

Although the Stick Figures fell in overtime, Brad’s performance was heroic from start to finish. His composure, consistency, and dedication in the crease helped secure a hard-fought point in the overtime loss. With a strong start to the season, Brad Wall looks poised to continue his stellar play heading into week three.

#2 Goalie of the Week – Manny DeBettencourt (Hooligans)

Manny DeBettencourt put on a gritty, standout performance in net for the Hooligans this week, facing a relentless onslaught from the hungry and tenacious Stone Hands. With 54 shots fired his way, Manny made 46 saves, finishing with a strong .852 save percentage and a GAA of 8.00.

Despite the Hooligans falling just short of the win, Manny’s effort kept them in the game and gave his team a fighting chance. Facing one of the league’s top flex players, Sean G, is no easy task, yet Manny held his ground, showcasing his unorthodox standup style that blends old-school fundamentals with creative, instinctive play. No one executes it quite like Manny.

With a solid start to the season at 1–1, Manny looks to carry this momentum into week three, ready to face the high-octane offense of the Mustangs and continue proving why he’s one of the league’s top netminders.

#3 Goalie of the Week – Nick Bonofiglio (Spiders)

Nick Bonofiglio earns his spot in the top three goalies once again this week with a strong performance against a dangerous Smokey Joes squad. Facing 39 shots, Nick stopped 33, finishing with a .846 save percentage and a GAA of 6.00. He stood tall in key moments, keeping the Spiders alive through several high-danger situations.

Nick’s task wasn’t easy—he had to contend with Matt Swan, the Joes’ captain and one of the most feared shooters in the league. With five championships under his belt, Swan knows how to generate offense, yet Nick limited him to just two goals—a commendable effort.

Adding to his impressive performance, Nick registered his first career assist, setting up a goal for blue-liner Nick Provenzano. His composure, skill, and ability to make crucial plays earned him the #3 Goalie of the Week honor and kept his team competitive throughout the match.

1st Week, Fall 2025 SSBHL Top Players of the week!

Welcome Back to the SSBHL Fall Season!

The South Shore Ball Hockey League is officially back for another exciting fall season! I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone hit the floor again, watching how the teams shape up, and seeing the intensity and passion that makes this league so special. Every season brings its own surprises, rivalries, and standout performances, and I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds this fall.

A big congratulations goes out to our two new captains stepping into leadership roles this season: J-Mac and the Mustangs, and Jeff Beattie and the Stick Figures. Best of luck to both squads as they begin their journeys – we’re all excited to see what you bring to the league!

I’d also like to give a special thank you once again to Ronnie Price for hosting the Arty Tournament this summer. It was an incredible event that brought the community together, and I know Arty would have been proud to see the competition and camaraderie that day.

Now it’s time to get back into the weekly grind – and of course, we’ll be highlighting the weekly high performers once again. Keep bringing your best, because you never know when your name might be up there!

Here’s to another fun, competitive, and memorable season in the SSBHL. Good luck to all teams, and let’s make this fall one to remember!

The Goal-Getters:

1)     Player Spotlight #1: Aiden Lovett

The SSBHL fall season kicked off with a bang, and leading the charge in the opening game was Aiden Lovett, who put on an offensive clinic against the Spiders. Lovett tallied 3 goals and 3 assists, proving to be a constant threat every time he touched the ball.

One of his tallies came on the power play, where he showcased his poise and finishing touch, capitalizing on the man advantage to swing momentum for his team. Beyond the scoring, Lovett’s vision and playmaking ability set up teammates all night, making him a driving force in the victory.

If this performance is any indication of what’s to come, opponents will have their hands full with Lovett this season. A true statement game to open the year.

2)     High Performer #2: Matt Connolly

While known primarily for his steady presence on the blue line, Matt Connolly showed he’s just as dangerous on the attack in the opener against the Spiders. Connolly exploded offensively, netting 4 goals and adding 1 assist, including a huge power play marker that further cemented his impact on the game.

What made the performance even more impressive was his ability to balance defensive responsibilities while jumping into the rush and finishing like a seasoned forward. Connolly’s offensive instincts were on full display, and his effort was a major factor in the team’s dominant showing.

A statement game from the back end – proving that Connolly can change the game from anywhere on the floor.

3)     High Performer #3: Matt Swan

Rounding out our top performers from opening week is Matt Swan, the long-time captain of the Smokey Joes. Swan did everything he could to spark his team in a tough matchup against the Stone Hands, putting up 1 goal and 3 assists for a strong 4-point night.

Despite the loss, Swan’s leadership and playmaking were on full display, creating opportunities and keeping his team in the fight until the very end. As one of the league’s most consistent veterans, Swan continues to show why he’s such a respected captain — leading by example and leaving it all out on the floor.

Even in defeat, it was a standout effort from the Smokey Joes’ leader.

Lockdown Legends:

1)     Defensive Player of the Week – Eric Kinger

In the season opener against the defending champs, the Smokey Joes, Eric Kinger set the tone with a rock-solid defensive performance. Tasked with shutting down some of the league’s top offensive threats, Kinger was a steady presence in his own end—breaking up rushes, blocking shots, and making smart plays under pressure. His ability to read the game and disrupt the Smokey Joes’ attack was a huge part of keeping the game within reach.

Not only did Kinger anchor the defense, but he also chipped in offensively, adding 1 goal and 2 assists to cap off a complete two-way effort. For his combination of shutdown defense and timely contributions on the scoresheet, Eric Kinger earns the nod as our #1 Defensive Player of the Week.

2)     Defensive Player of the Week – #2 Spot – Brendan Merrick

Brendan Merrick earns the second spot on our defensive leaderboard thanks to an absolute workhorse performance in the opener. Merrick was all over the rink like a man possessed—chasing down every loose ball, battling in the corners, and disrupting the Smokey Joes’ attack at every turn. His relentless hustle and energy set the tone defensively, making life difficult for the opposition all night long.

What truly stood out was Merrick’s balance of intensity and awareness. Even while flying around the rink with unmatched effort, he stayed smart and tactical—always in position to break up a play, create a turnover, or spark a transition. His tireless engine and defensive IQ made him an undeniable force in the game.

3)     Defensive Player of the Week – #3 Spot – Eddie Long

Rounding out our defensive stars of the week is Eddie Long, who made his presence felt in a big way. Long was a wall in the defensive zone, blocking multiple shots and using his size and strength to box opposing players out of dangerous areas. His physical play and positioning were a major reason why the shot count stayed low and the scoreboard remained quiet for the opposition.

On top of his defensive dominance, Long also made his mark offensively—registering a big-time assist that proved crucial in sealing the victory. With his blend of toughness in the defensive end and clutch contribution up front, Eddie Long earns the well-deserved #3 spot on this week’s defensive rankings.

1)     Top Goalie of the Week – #1 Spot – Manny Debettencourt

In sweltering conditions with temperatures soaring above 85 degrees, Manny Debettencourt stood tall—literally and figuratively—for the Hooligans in their season opener against the Stick Figures. Despite the heat beating down on him in full goalie gear, Manny never wavered and delivered a stellar performance between the pipes.

Facing 22 shots, he turned away 20 of them, finishing with a sharp 0.909 save percentage and a 2.0 GAA. His composure, focus, and big saves down the stretch allowed the Hooligans to hold their lead and lock down a huge 2 points to open the season.

Manny’s mix of grit, poise, and resilience in brutal conditions earns him the honor of #1 Goalie of the Week.

2)     Top Goalie of the Week – #2 Spot – Brad Wall

Coming in at our second spot is Brad Wall of the Stick Figures, who delivered a strong performance in their opener against the Hooligans. Despite his team falling short in a tight 3–2 game, Brad was a difference-maker in net, keeping his squad within striking distance all night.

Facing a heavy workload of 30 shots, Wall turned aside 27 of them, finishing with a 0.900 save percentage and a 3.0 GAA. Like Manny, he battled through the intense 85+ degree heat in full goalie gear, yet never let the conditions or pressure rattle him.

Brad Wall’s effort, composure, and resilience under fire secure him the #2 Goalie of the Week spot.

3)     Top Goalie of the Week – #3 Spot – Dan Harding

Taking the third spot is Dan Harding of the Mustangs, who put in a solid performance in his season debut. Facing 38 shots, Harding stopped 34 of them, finishing with a 0.895 save percentage and a 4.0 GAA.

While not the heaviest workload of the week—that honor belongs to Nick Bonofiglio who faced 64 shots of the Spiders—Harding still dealt with a steady offensive push and kept his team competitive throughout the game. Playing in the earlier matchup meant the conditions weren’t as scorching as later in the day, but Harding’s sharp positioning and calm play under pressure stood out.

For his steady netminding and ability to keep the Mustangs within reach, Dan Harding earns the #3 Goalie of the Week nod.

This season looks like it’s going to be an amazing and close one! Just want everyone to remember, this is all for fun, exercise, and a good time! Please, don’t take it so seriously… series trash talk and physical play is not going to be tolerated. No one wants to be limping into work the next day because they got chopped in the ankle or shoved over by someone taking things too far. Don’t be an ass, Play with respect to everyone with and against you. Be calm and remember, its only a game, there is no cash reward for winning or contract deal waiting for you, those times have passed most of us by lol. Take this league for what it is, a good reason for some exercise and some fun with friends and like-minded individuals who love the game of hockey. Don’t ruin it by being a jerk and taking it too far. We all need to go to work the next day, so keep that in mind. Accidents can happen though, you might get tripped on a play or accidentally slashed by a stick, or maybe someone runs into you by accident, don’t flip out, I can almost guarantee they did it by mistake and there were no ill intentions, take min to catch your breath and calm yourself before losing your mind at an accident. DON’T ESCALTE things when it isn’t necessary. I recommend you all wear shin pads to minimize being accidently slashed. The refs will do their best to see the calls, but again, we are not pros, we will do our best but be patient with us. Do not under any circumstances scream at a ref as this will result in an unsportsmanlike penalty against you who yelled.

With all that said, I am looking forward to a formidable and exciting season and can’t wait to see you all Sunday the 16th! 😊

Thank you!

12th and Final Week of Spring SSBHL 2024!

Good morning SSBHL!

As you all know, Last Sunday was the final game of the year, The Championship! Was an epic clash between the Undefeated Stone Hands! And the insane scoring prowess of the Bald Beavers! Without further delay, Let’s get into it and how it played out.

1st Period:

The game started out with a fast pace and intense action! Both teams are looking to impose their will and play style on the other! The Bald Beavers opened the game up with J-Mac scoring the 1st goal of the game at 15:13 from a wrist shot at the point assisted by Josh Charmatz.

However, The Stone hands would get back the next one from Ryan Doherty point blank tap in from an assist from Stone Hands Captain Steve Wilde, at 4:11.

The Beavers would storm right back to reclaim their lead at 2:00 with another goal from J-Mac Unassisted.

And yet again, A goal from the Stone Less than a few seconds later at 1:49 would be scored by Ryan Doherty again and assisted from non-other than Steve Wilde and Tie the game at 2-2.

Stone Hands would then again before the 1st ended at 1:06, would score one more time, this time from Steve Wilde assisted from Ryan this time, and would take the lead heading into the 2nd 3-2.

Nick Bonofiglio did a tremendous Job in the 1st, stopping 15 of 17 shots on goal.

1st stats

J-mac at 15:13 (Beavers)

Ryan at 4:11 (Stone Hands)

J-Mac at 2:00 (Beavers)

Ryan at 1:49 (Stone Hands)

Wilde at 1:06 (Stone Hands)

Beavers Shots 17

Stone hands Shots: 13

2nd Period:

Once the 1st period had ended, the 2nd was vastly more difficult to get shots on net or get good looking opportunities. Stone hands Pushed hard in the 2nd period and had the Beavers on there heels! Getting 14 shots on Steve Demas in that period alone compared to the 6 on Nick Bonofiglio

Eventually at 1:46 in the 2nd, Stone hands had a massive goal! From Steve Wilde assisted from Aneel! Giving the Stone Hands a 4-2 Lead heading into the 2nd period.

2nd period Stats

Wilde at 1:46 (Stone Hands)

Beavers Shots 6

Stone Hands Shots 14

3rd Period:

It all came down to the wire, can Stone Hands Hold on and keep the 4-2 lead? Or will the offensive prowess of the Beavers break though?

Things start off strong for the Beavers, as J-mac Once again starts off the scoring and buries a wrist shot at 15:52 assisted from Colman, closing in on the Stone Hands Lead.

At 13:06 in the period, Danny Gately of the Stone Hands would receive a Minor Penalty, giving the Beavers a big time Power Play opportunity.

The Beavers cashed in on that man advantage and of course, J-Mac Yet again scores a slap shot from the point assisted from Josh again at 12:20… Game Tied at 4-4 now!

The battle Raged on, Both Goalies coming up with miraculous saves! And defense prevailing time and time again. It was as if it was never going to end and was looking more and more like it would be going into overtime.

Then, yelling ensued from the Beavers Bench, and as a result, Matt Connolly was given an unsportsmanlike conduct Penalty at 6:20… A monster possibility to take a lead!

But The Beavers Penalty Killing was strong and held off the attack and maintained the tie!

However, with only 15 seconds left in the 3rd period, a seeing eye shot from the point from Colman, found a hole though Nick who was screened from J-Mac and went in, giving the Beavers a back breaking lead at 5-4.

The last face off was won by Stone Hands who were desperately trying one last chance! Brain James went to make a move into the offensive zone, but had his pocket picked by who else? J-Mac who buried an empty net goal and would seal the game.

3rd Period Stats

J-Mac 15:52 (Beavers)

Dan Gately Penalty Checking at 13:06 (Stone hands)

J-Mac 12:20 (Beavers)

Connolly Penalty Unsportsmanlike Conduct 6:20 (Beavers)

Colman :15 (Beavers)

J-Mac :02 (Beavers)

Beavers Shots 17

Stone Hands Shots 10

Final Score 6-4 Beavers to win the SSBHL Cup!

11th week, Semi Final Results! Cup Final Set!

Good afternoon SSBHL Players!

Great week last Sunday of some intense playoff action!

Let’s get into the some of the top performers of last week!

Playoff Kings / Offense and Defense

1) Joe MacKenzie could not be stopped by anyone Sunday and was an absolute force! Cutting though defense like a hot knife though butter, and undressing the goalie were part of his day! Racking up 4 goals and 2 assists with 6 points total! Joe was showing us why he is a top playoff performer! Insane work by a pure athlete. Rack em up J-mac!

2) Gianni Sciola was pure heart in the semifinals! Blocking shots, disrupting plays left and right, and racked up 3 assists netting 3 points total! His 1st season as a capt and he is looking to bring home the hardware! Magnificent work man!

3) Patrick Schultz displayed balls of steal by sacrificing the body to block shots and gained 2 points with 1 goal and 1 assist! He was running up and down the ice all game, and even after an injury kept playing... the guy is seemingly indestructible and has the tenacity to swing games himself. Splendid work Pat and Hope to see you back for Finals.

 Cup Winning Goalies

1) As he did all season long, Nick Bonofiglio had an absolutely stellar performance! facing 31 shots and stopping 30 of them! Posting a .968% This guy was a scorer’s nightmare to deal with all seasons long and has continued into the playoffs!

2) Steve D Answered the call Sunday and was needed as an emergency flex player goalie for the Beavers and had a solid performance! facing 22 shots and stopping 20 of them, posting a .909% Clever work Steve and thanks for your services this season!

How the semifinals wrapped up...

Bald Beavers won vs the Joes and advanced to the finals!

Stone Hands Won Vs the Spiders and moved onto the Finals!

The stage is now set for an instant classic match! All year long, these 2 teams have battled for the top spot! Both games these teams have played each other went to shootouts and both times Stone Hands Pulled it off...

But now.... No more shootouts will decide the game... Both teams will keep playing until one team is left standing at the top! Who will grasp the cup!?

Will it be the High octane, fast explosive offense of the Bald Beavers? Who set a record for best Goal Differential at +37?

Or will the stingy and well-organized Stone hands Finally Get the cup with a solid and well-balanced team all season?

This match will be decided by inches! No matter who pulls it off, it has been a great ride to play in and watch unfold!

Good luck to the remaining two!

Finals Match:

6/30/24 Stone Hands (1st) Vs Bald Beavers (2nd) 10:00am

Awards:

Before the puck drops, I will be handing out the award winners! Try to show up at 9:45am for that. As always I encourage as many of the league participants as possible to show up and watch the game! and you may have won an award! So, try and be there!

Thank you all! Good Luck Beavers and Stone Hands!
