June 9, 2015

The St George bats woke up in a big way Tuesday, pounding out 17 runs on 20 hits, to defeat the Cedar Redmen 17-8. Logan Lafemina and Connor Clark led the way, with Lafemina going 4 for 5 at the plate and Clark belting a homerun and a double with 5 RBI.  Jarod Stirling also smacked 4 hits and Austin Ruseler was 3 for 3 with 2 doubles.  St George was aggressive on the base paths all night, swiping 9 stolen bases and executing multiple hit and run plays to add to the excitement.  Lafemina had 4 stolen bases and Stirling had 3.  Connor Clark got the win on the mound in only 3 innings of work.

Alumni Game - Fun for All

June 15, 2015

The first annual St George Legion Alumni Game was held Saturday at Elks Field.  It was a fun-filled night, with the Legends (alumni) providing plenty of fun-filled competition for the St George Legion team.  They may not be in the same playing condition as their glory days in high school, but the ol' veterans brought their A game to the field in a noble effort.  After the Legends jumped out to a big 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, the Sentinels fought back, scoring in each of the final 5 innings to finish the 6 inning contest 10-6.

Thanks to the alumni for their donations to the program, playing hard, and coming out to support the team.  We are already looking forward to next year!

Sentinels drop DH to Salt Lake Gulls

June 15, 2015

St George showed up sluggish Friday night, and the visiting Salt Lake Gulls took full advantage to efficiently drop the Sentinels in a doubleheader at Elks Field.  Plagued by lackluster effort in the first game, St George fell behind early and could never recover.  Giving up a 6-run third inning doomed the Sentinels.  After walking 4 of the first 5 batters in the inning, three consecutive RBI hits by the Gulls AA team did the damage and paced the Gulls to the win.  Austin Ruseler started for the Sentinels and took the loss.  The final score was 10-3.

In the nightcap, the Sentinels played with much better energy and focus against the Gulls AAA team.  However, after falling behind 4-0 in the top of the third as a result of two consecutive squeeze plays for the Gulls, St George rallied in three of the next innings to each time have the tying run on base or at the plate.  However, each rally fell short of getting the clutch hit needed to bring those runs home.  Josh Howard and Jackson Bithell both had doubles and scored a run for the game. Chris Petrosie pitched well but took the loss in his first appearance for the Sentinels this season.  The final score was 5-2.

St George Starts 2-0 in First Day of Logan Legion Tourney

June 19, 2015

St George had a good first day in Logan today, despite some adversity.  After van troubles forced the team to arrive late to its first game in Logan, the Sentinels wasted no time in getting into the game.  St George erupted for 9 runs in the first inning and cruised to a 10-0 victory in only 5 innings over a stunned and typically very solid  Mountain Crest Orange Trappers team.  Logan Lafemina led the way at the plate, going 3-3 with 2 RBI and a stolen base.  Brooks Barney started on the mound and was sharp in striking out 4 in only 3 innings pitched to get the win.  He also had a double and 2 RBI at the plate.  Trevor Berry also had a double in the contest.

In the second game, St George again jumped out to an early lead, scoring 3 runs in the 2nd inning that was highlighted by a well-executed squeeze play by Trevor Berry.  Trevor was 3-3 in the game, including 2 stolen bases.  However, the Sentinels bats stalled in the later innings, allowing Herriman to creep back and ultimately tie the game in the top of the7th inning.  Nevertheless, Connor Clark pitched out of a bases loaded jam to keep the score tied, and then held Herriman back again in the top of the 8th inning with a runner on 3rd base.  In the bottom of the 8th, Logan Lafemina drove a pitch to the wall in left field for a double and walk-off RBI for the victory.  Josh Howard pitched 5 strong innings for St George, giving up only 2 runs and striking out 4.

Sentinels Win Logan Tournament

June 21, 2015

St George had a great weekend in Logan, winning the 16-team tournament in defining fashion 10-3 over Cedar City on Saturday night.  Although the St George Legion team was again shorthanded, traveling with only 11 players, they rallied together and endured 6 games in 3 days to bring home the tourney championship.

After going 2-0 on Thursday, the Sentinels beat Sky View 9-1 on Friday to win their pool play round and qualify for the Saturday semi-final round.  Carter Milne was at his best on the mound, going the distance while giving up only 1 run while striking out 3 and no walks.  Stars at the plate included: Kash Walker, who went 3 for 3 with a double and scored 3 runs; Brooks Barney, who went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI; and Connor Clark, who went 3 for 4 with 1 RBI and stolen base.

In the semi-final game on Saturday afternoon, St George defeated the Blacksmith Fork Trappers Blue team by a score of 6-5 .  The game started rough for St George, as Connor Clark started on the mound but was removed after pitching to only 4 batters with stiffness in his back.  Clark had appeared in 2 games previously on the mound during the tourney and was worn down. Logan Lafemina took over the pitching duties with the bases loaded and only 1 out.  Two fielding errors by the Sentinels led to 4 runs for the Trappers before St George could get the third out in the first inning.  Fortunately, the Sentinels settled down and scored runs in each of the first 3 innings to tie the score in the bottom of the third.  Jaden Rawlings had an RBI double followed by an RBI single for Trevor Berry in the inning.

However, the drama for the game wasn't over.  Both teams went scoreless for the next 4 innings, setting the stage for a dramatic finish in the bottom of the 7th.  Logan Lafemina led off the inning with a sharp single.  He then stole second base. Kash Walker's deep fly to right field moved Logan over to third.  The Trappers promptly intentionally walked both Brooks Barney and Josh Howard to load the bases with Connor Clark stepping to the plate.  A perfect bunt down the first base line squeezed home Lafemina to give Clark the game-winning RBI and the Sentinels the victory to reach the championship game.  Logan Lafemina was tremendous on the mound for St George, pitching 7 innings without giving up any earned runs to get the victory.  Jaden Rawlings was solid 2-3 at the plate, with a  double and RBI.  Trevor Berry also had a good game, collecting 3 singles and driving in a run.

In the championship, St George faced a familiar foe in the Cedar City Redmen.  After giving up a run in the top of the first inning to Cedar, Brooks Barney held strong and went on to pitch all 7 innings for the Sentinels as they defeated Cedar 10-3 to win the tournament.  Despite injuring his left hand in the second inning while hitting a single to right field, Barney remained un-phased on the mound.  He ended with collecting 7 strikeouts for the game as well.  The Sentinels took the lead in the second inning when Trevor Berry walked, followed by Chandler Allman stroking a double to right field on a perfectly executed hit-and-run play, and Logan Lafemina then punching a double to right to score 2 runs.  Lafemina also scored in the inning on a sharp RBI single to right by Barney.  From there, St George never looked back, scoring 7 more runs in the next 2 innings on a flurry of hits to put the game away and take home the championship.  Josh Howard was 3-4 for the game, with Brooks Barney, Logan Lafemina, Kash Walker, Connor Clark and Trevor Berry all collecting 2 hits for the game.  Chandler Allman and Brenr Nelson had doubles while Kash Walker had a triple.
