** The Woodlands Invitational Tournament **
Friday and Saturday, December 7&8, 2007

The Trojans put on one their best wrestling days of the year at The Woodlands Invitational Tournament.  With only 9 wrestlers competing, a top twenty would have been considered a good showing.  However, Austin Moore, Bobby Barney, Jack Squier, Andrew Menke, and Grant Jones each managed to put together 3-5 wins in a row, Colin MacMurtrie added a couple, and Joseph Langdon added another.  Before they new it, they had put up 116.5 team points to finish 11th in the 33 team tournament.  Along the way, Jack and Austin had wins over several #4 seeds. Bobby Barney was seeded #1 and WBF over #2 seed Travis Blanchard of Lafayette, Louisiana in the Championship Match.  Coaches voted Bobby "Most Outstanding Wrestler" of the tournament.  First year wrestler Grant Jones probably created the most excitement among his teammates.  Grant rolled off 4 wins on Saturday to finish 5th. It was imppressive to see a newcomer have so much fun, and success in a tournament that size.  Congratulations to Grant and all the Trojan Wrestlers on an excellent performance!

The Anderson Wrestling Team Wants You!!
No experience needed----Most wrestlers begin the sport in high school

Join a very successful sports program that just won its 12th consecutive District 27 Championship. Under Coach Paul Muck, the 2006/07 team had 8 individual district champions and 4 state qualifiers. The team won district, placed 3rd at the Region 4 championships, and placed 19th at the state tournament, with 2 individual place winners.

There are many benefits from participating in the sport of wrestling:

> Wrestling builds character. Winning at wrestling depends on hard work, courage, and mental toughness as much as athletic ability. Any kid can succeed at wrestling if he is willing to put his mind to it. Wrestlers learn the value of preparation and hard work and the role it plays in achieving one¡¦s life goals. What wrestlers learn on the mat can be transferred to real life experiences. Wrestlers are self-reliant, mentally and physically fit, have a great work ethic, and are self-disciplined, competitive and responsible. Wrestlers also tend to be goal oriented and very confident.

> Wrestling provides a great opportunity for smaller athletes. You will always compete against opponents that are your own weight. Our 103 lb. wrestler is just as important to the team as our 275 lb. wrestler. We need freshmen and sophomores to fill many of the lower weight classes, and you could have a chance to earn a varsity spot as a freshman. You will learn what you need to know in practice.

>You will get in the best shape of your life. Wrestlers are perhaps the best-conditioned athletes of any sport. Every workout builds strength, endurance, agility, and aerobic fitness.

> Wrestling teaches self-defense.Scholastic wrestling has been proven to be the most effective means of self-defense. The one thing nearly all champions of no-holds-barred and mixed martial arts sporting events have in common is their background in scholastic wrestling. Wrestling skills consistently win over karate, boxing, and other forms of self-defense.

The wrestling season starts in early November after the end of football season and ends in February. Information about the team and upcoming season will be available on the Anderson wrestling web site:

"I have seen first hand how wrestling has helped many players in the NFL-including the development of their upper body, hand control, and use of leg strength. Wrestling skills help a football player move quickly to the point of attack, putting one's body in position to neutralize a play, and take control of a match-up."
---Rich Gannon - Oakland Raider's Quarterback and 2001 Pro Bowl MVP

"If you decide to give wrestling a try, be prepared to get involved in a wildly exciting and exceptional activity. But be warned, the sport has a tendency to give tests first, then the lessons."
---Wade Schalles, 2x NCAA wrestling champion

On Saturday, JV wrestlers Alex Griffith, Brock England, Evan Durant, Zeke Solomon, Jack Squier, Jeff Lamb, and Joseph Langdon wrestled in the Cedar Park JV Tournament. Since the Trojans didn't field a full lineup we didn't fair well in team points placing 8th in the 11 school field. But that did stop the Trojans from bringing home some hardware. Joseph Langdon placed 1st at 125 lbs. going 3-0 with wins over opponents from Leander, San Antoinio Christian Academy, and Austin Bowie. Alex Griffith followed up with another perfect day placing 1st at 160 lbs. with wins over opponents from Austin Bowie, Killeen Ellison, and Harker Heights. The JV team sent 7 freshmen wrestlers over to the McCallum Dual Tournament to get some work in. The Trojans had hoped to fill in some gaps for teams not a full strength, but that did not happen, so they wrestled duals against Leander, Austin High, & Pflugerville Connolly varsity teams with just 7 wrestlers. Tough day to say the least, but there were a couple of positive notes. Against Connolly, Jack Squier wrestled up a weight class and scored an exciting victory with a pinned after escaping several head & arm near falls from his opponent. Evan Durant wrestled up a weight class as well for the first time at 152 lbs., Evan was down in points in his match as well when he managed a reversal and took his opponent to his back. He scored a pinned with one second left in the match! You had to be there to understand and feel the excitement of these young men. They are to be admired for wanting to show up and face the varsity teams. Other wrestlers that participated with the JV are Adam Brook, Zeke Solomon, Jeff Lamb, Joseph Langdon, and Jonathan Langdon.

**Anderson Verses Bowie High School**
** Final Score Anderson 29 Bowie 43 **

The Junior Varsity got the Trojans vs. Bulldogs Dual Meet rolling on Wednesday night with 8 matches. The Trojans picked up 3 wins with Jack Squier getting a 7-4 decision at 130 lbs., Alex Griffith wrestling at 160 lbs. pinned his opponent for a win and Brock England won a 4-2 decision in overtime in a tough match of two young heavyweights.

Despite a 43-29 loss, the Trojans Varsity Team hung tough against Bowie. The Bulldogs are an extremely skilled opponent, that rank among the top 5 best teams in the state. Coleman Feeley wrestling at 215 lbs. picked up the first points of the meet for Anderson with a win in double overtime as he was able to ride out his opponent for the 30 second overtime period. Joshua Yuja won a hard fought 10-5 decision at 125 lbs., next up David Cook at 130 lbs. was trailing in the match, when he came up with a reversal and pin for the Trojans third win. Bobby Barney and Miles McHale gave the Trojans two more wins with pins at 135 lbs. and 152 lbs. Senior Jacob "Shaggy" Krell finished the night with a 18-0 technical fall win for the Trojans. A big special thank you goes out to Trojans JV Wrestlers Brock England, Jack Squier, Zeke Soloman, Adam Brook and Max Gaibort for coming out on their day off to support their teammates and put in some shifts at the mat tables. *** Anderson High School vs. Austin High School ***
** Final Score Anderson 75 Austin 6 **

It's amazing what five weeks of hard practices and tough competition can do to really improve a team. As the Trojan faithful may remember Anderson and Austin High tied at the LBJ Duals the first week of December. That would not be the case on Thursday night, as the Trojans Wrestlers came out rolling and didn't look back until they had won every contested match on their way to a 75-6 win with Austin's only scoring coming from a forfeit at the 103 lbs. weight class. Austin foreited at 119,145,215 weight classes. Joshua Yuja at 130 started the night with an 8-4 decision, followed by Bobby Barney at 135 with a 14-3 major decision, next up Louis Keller at 140 wrestled an excellent match winning with a pin, the always smooth Miles McHale also won by pin at 152, then Jacob "Shaggy" Krell at 160 scored a technical fall with a 19-3 win, first year wrestler Alex Griffith filled in at 171 and added lots of excitement with a win by pin. Scott Burger then took his talents to the mat to add another pin, as did freshman heaavyweight Andy Vasquez. The last two matches of the night provided plenty action as Freshman Austin Moore scored a 9-2 decision against a very tough opponent at 112 and to end the night David Cook won in overtime 5-3 in a tough battle at 125 lbs. After the varsity dual was over, Anderson gave the junior varsity wrestlers some added work with four excellent matches where Joseph Langdon, Jonathan Langdon, Jeff Lamb, and Will Glen all picked up wins.

**Important--Please make note of a schedule change. On January 28, 2006 the Trojan Team will travel to San Antonio MacArthur HS to participate in MacArthur's Dual Quads Tournament instead of going to the Westside Tournament in Houston as originally scheduled. The online schedule & calendar has been changed to reflect this change.**
