Webster Dominates For The Elks

Following Perryville's 62-59 loss at the hands of Elkton on Friday, it would have been easy to point a finger at the Panthers' game plan as the reason for their defeat.

Despite being turned away more often than not by the Golden Elks' Larry Webster, Perryville repeatedly attacked Elkton in the paint.

Still, the Panthers' issue wasn't in their plan, but their execution.
"I told these dudes, 'All day, all day, go at him (Webster),' " Perryville coach Charlie Givens Jr. said following the loss. "They went at him but no pump fakes. They just went straight up. Every time we went up, he went up."

Not only would a pump fake throw a little guess work into Webster timing his leaps, but it could also result in the 6-foot-7 senior getting into foul trouble, and thus being forced to the bench - possibly the only way to keep him from dominating a game.

Webster finished Friday's contest with 23 points, 17 rebounds, 18 blocks and only one personal foul.
To play a full game in the paint, constantly blocking shots, fighting for rebounds, tallying put-back after put-back on the offensive end and finishing the game with only one foul is nothing short of stupendous.

"Webster had an excellent game," Givens said. "He knows how to play defense. He wants to play defense."

With Webster on the court, he gives Elkton a game-changing presence in the interior. If an opposing player penetrates past the perimeter defense, the Elks have the ultimate security blanket waiting below the basket. "With Larry in the paint and blocking shots, it gets us more hyped," Elkton point guard Greg Johnson said. "Whether we win or lose, you're still not going to be able to beat Larry in the paint." That sentiment rang true on Friday, as Perryville was there with a chance to win at the end. Really, it would be foolish to expect anything else in this intensely competitive, budding rivalry. Fortunately, the two teams could square off an additional two times this season. The Elks will make a return trip to Perryville on Feb. 19 and both squads are in the same bracket at the Cecil Green-N-Gold Tournament next week. If both win - or lose-their first-round games, county basketball fans will be treated to a rematch, with the finale serving as a potential grudge match. Whenever Elkton and Perryville meet again,Givens is already throwing down the gauntlet. And doing his best Dennis Green impression. "Bottom line, we're a better team than them," Givens said. "Y'all can print that. I really believe we're a better team than them. We let them off the hook. We know who they are."

Against Perryville, Webster continues dominant ways

PERRYVILLE - This just in: It's all but impossible to shoot over, around or through Elkton's Larry Webster.

The 6-foot-7 senior posted his second straight triple-double with 23 points, 17 rebounds and 18 blocks as the Golden Elks surmounted yet another halftime deficit en route to a 62-59 victory over host Perryville on Friday. Webster is now averaging a triple-double on the year, with 16.5 points, 18.8 rebounds and 10.3 blocks per game. "When I see a guy coming at me, I think about if he's looking at somebody else to see if I want to jump or not," Webster said of his shot-blocking routine. "I see if he's going to try and pass it to somebody behind me. If not, I usually go up." Despite Webster's efforts, Elkton (4-0) left the court after the second quarter trailing 29-22. It was the fourth time in as many games this year the Elks trailed at the break, though never by such a wide margin." I told them, 'Look, they're going to come out after you,' " Panthers coach Charlie Givens Jr. said of his halftime speech. "That's the bottom line. 'They're going to come after you. Either you're going to play ball, or you're just going to bow down." Following a thunderous dunk by Perryville's Artie Hollingsworth to open the third quarter, it appeared another comeback attempt by Elkton might fall short. Not so fast.

Trailing 33-24, the Elks' Greg Johnson converted one of two free throws and - after a teammate corralled the rebound from his miss - drained a 3-pointer from the corner to cut the Panthers' lead to five.
"It got a couple of our players a little bit hyped," Johnson said. "After I made that shot, I think it brought us back in the game."

Following a switch to a man-to-man defense, steals on each of Perryville's next two possessions and lay-ups from Thaddeus Peters and Anthony Minter, Elkton was down just one. Two trips down the court later, the Elks had their first lead.

"We went to man-to-man defense after (Johnson's 3-pointer) and shut down their point guards," Elkton coach Ed Herr said. "Artie took over a little bit, but with Larry on the inside, he just dominated. Artie got his points, but Larry still took control of the boards."

Elkton led by as many as seven in the fourth quarter, but Perryville wasn't done. Senior James Patterson's 3-pointer with less than one minute to go brought the Panthers to within three, at 62-59, where the scoring ended. Perryville (2-1) had two opportunities to tie in the waning seconds, but the Panthers were turned away by a Webster block and then turned the ball over on an errant pass to seal the win for Elkton.

"I wanted Patterson or (Josh) Wilmot, or even Artie (to take the final shot)," Givens said. "I just wanted to get a good look, a good shot off. That's all. It doesn't matter who took it, because I had four guys on the court who could have made the shot."

Peters finished with 13 points, five assists and three rebounds for Elkton, while Johnson scored 13 points and handed out 11 assists.
For Perryville, Hollingsworth totaled 21 points and six rebounds, and Patterson tallied 18 points and 11 assists.

Spotlight Player
Larry Webster, Elkton

The senior has played an integral role in the Golden Elks' blazing start to the season. Webster recorded 23 points, 17 rebounds, 18 blocks and just one personal foul in Elkton's dramatic 62-59 win over Perryville on Friday and followed that up with 12 points, 15 rebounds and seven blocks in a win over Edgewood on Thursday.

Webster has averaged 15.6 points, 18.0 rebounds and 9.6 blocks per game during the Elks' 5-0 start to the season.

In fact, Webster has scored in double-digits and hauled in at least 14 rebounds in each contest so far.

Webster has already equaled his regular-season triple-double total from last year (two), when he averaged 11.6 points, 11.4 rebounds and 6.3 blocks per game to earn All-County honors.

When asked following Elkton's win over Perryville why teams continue to attack Webster under the basket, Elks coach Ed Herr couldn't help but let out a small chuckle.
"I don't know," Herr said. "That's a big question we have, but I hope they keep doing it."

Triple-double
Posted: Friday, December 14, 2007 3:41 AM EST
After opening its season with lopsided losses to John Carroll and Mt. St. Joseph's, Edgewood finally garnered its first victory Wednesday at Rising Sun. Playing such a rugged first two games, Rams coach Lamont Pennick said, helped Edgewood prepare for the Tigers.

"I scheduled those two games early because I wanted to measure where we have to go to be like John Carroll and Mt. St. Joe's as a program," Pennick said. "That helped us (Wednesday) because those first two games we didn't make any shots. (Wednesday) we made shots.

"It helps build character."
John Carroll opened the season No. 21 nationally in ESPN's HIGH Elite 25 basketball rankings but dropped out of the most recent poll.

Elkton is a perfect 3-0 thus far, but the mark isn't due to the Golden Elks' first-half play. In fact, Elkton has trailed at the midway point in each of its three games.

First-year coach Ed Herr's squad was faced with three-point deficits against Fallston and Elkton Christian and was five points behind Joppatowne at the half on Tuesday.
"We came in and made adjustments at halftime," Herr said. "We've been passing better and our big man (senior Larry Webster) in the middle is grabbing 20 rebounds per game."

Webster is averaging 19.3 rebounds, 14.3 points and 7.7 blocks per game. Teams are forced to concentrate on him, opening up the shooters.

"We've been playing together pretty good, passing the ball and we've been hitting key shots on the outside," Herr said.
n For Joppatowne coach Keven Moldenhauer, Thursday's victory over North East meant much more than just the first for his team this season. It was also Moldenhauer's first as a varsity coach after two losses to open his career.

"I needed that first win," he said. "It's been a rough first two games, so it's nice to get one under the belt."

Part of the Mariners' slow start can be attributed to the Joppatowne football team's success and deep playoff run this season, as nine members of the basketball team also played football.

"We knew it would be sort of a slow, uphill climb," Moldenhauer said. "As long as we progress each game, we're going to be a good team by the time conference time comes."

By The Numbers

2 Triple-doubles by players from Elkton on Wednesday. Larry Webster accomplished the feat against Joppatowne for the Golden Elks, while Glenn Segure did the same for Elkton Christian Academy.
54.3 Points per game for North East through three games this season. The Indians averaged just 40.9 in 21 games last year.

70 Percent of Havre de Grace's points this season that have been scored by Trevon Hawkins and Rick Glover.

Game of the Week
No. 3 Elkton at No. 5 Perryville

When: 7 p.m. tonight

What Elkton needs to do to win: Feed the ball inside to Larry Webster. The senior has been one of the UCBAC's most dominating players so far this year and must continue to play at a high level on both ends of the court. The Elks, however, have been far from a one-man team, with Greg Johnson and Thaddeus Peters also scoring in double-digits in each game thus far.

What Perryville needs to do to win: Play consistently. In each of their first two games, the Panthers had stretches where they played excellently but also endured periods of time where they struggled. To beat Elkton, Perryville must play a complete game and try to get Webster into foul trouble.

What to expect: Elkton and Perryville represent two of the conference's three remaining undefeated teams, along with Bel Air. The two county rivals experienced two heated games last season, with each team winning once. Expect more of the same here, in a well-played game that comes down to the fourth quarter.

Elkton coach John Artinger said the Golden Elks’last game did not include one of junior Larry Webster’s finest efforts. It’s safe to say, however, that Tuesday’s performance against Perryville was one of the 6-foot-6 center’s best. Webster turned in a triple-double n 17 points, 12 rebounds and 11 blocks n as Elkton pulled away late for a 67-49 victory over the second-ranked Panthers. “We always tell Larry that he can be a lot better than he is,” said senior guard Yama Sidiqi, who finished with a game-high 19 points. “He doesn’t know that, but we tell him and it’s working. As the season goes on, he’s going to realize that he’s a great player and he can be a big problem for a lot of teams.” Elkton was able to set the pace of play, jumping out to a quick 8-3 lead before Perryville called a timeout with 4:20 to go in the opening frame. “We played team ball both on the offensive end and the defensive end,” Artinger said. “We handled their press and had lay-ups at the other end. Early on, we set the tempo and got out and ran. “(Perryville coach) Charlie (Givens, Jr.) said that he thinks they’re a great team. Right now, I think at this point, we may be a little better, but we’ve still got a long season to go.” The early advantage allowed the Elks to relax and run their offense, something that the team struggled with earlier in the season. “The difference was less turnovers and more of us running the plays,” Webster said. “We’ve always been playing good on defense, but now the offense is starting to come around.” Senior Clearn Heading added 11 points and seven rebounds, sophomore Greg Johnson tallied 10 points and four assists and junior Chris Duckson chipped in 12 boards and four points for the Elks (8-6 overall, 3-3 Susquehanna). Led by Travis Johnson, who finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Roger Williams, who tallied 12 points and four steals, Perryville went on a 7-0 run to open the second half and take a 29-28 lead, its first of the game. The Panthers also led at 37-36 with slightly more than one minute to go in the third quarter, but two free throws by Webster put the Elks up for good. The loss was just the second overall and first in the Susquehanna Division for Perryville (11-2, 5-1), which had won three straight games n all on the road. “Honestly, I thank Elkton for this,” Givens said. “We needed this. We were 11-1 and I got all my players walking around, big shots, big heads, superstars in school. They thought Elkton was garbage and they slept on them. They thought Elkton wasn’t a good team and Elkton came out and they played ball tonight. “They got shocked tonight. We definitely needed this. Their eyes are open now.” Givens’ father, Charlie Givens, Sr., was honored at halftime with a plaque to be placed at the entrance to the Perryville gymnasium. Givens, Sr., who won 349 games in his 36 years at the Panthers’ helm, is currently an assistant principal at Elkton High School.

Hi, kids! Welcome to The Larry Webster Show. Friday night’s boys’ basketball game belonged to the 6-foot-6 Elkton center, and everyone from the opposing players to the animated ‘Art’s Army’ cheering section knew it. Webster, a junior, led the Golden Elks (3-1) to a 62-50 victory over visiting Kent County behind a 24-point, 12-rebound performance. The 2005-06 All-County Honorable Mention selection also added seven blocks and three assists. “What can I say about Larry? He’s a phenomenal player,” Elkton coach John Artinger said. “He has the ability. He has the jumping ability. He has the scoring ability. He has soft hands. Blocking shots, that’s his forte. “As long as he controls the middle and forces teams to go to the outside… When they do come they get intimidated, so it throws their shot off.” The Golden Elks started the game with a 9-3 run, which included seven points from Webster. The Trojans fought back to take the lead momentarily at 10-9 late in the quarter before Clearn Heading registered five of his 12 points to end the frame. His team never trailed again. Webster, meanwhile, added eight points in a second quarter in which Elkton outscored the Trojans 20-9 behind an 11-0 run. Kent County was held without a field goal until less than one minute remained in the frame. “We were able to run our plays and keep it running until we found the open spots to shoot,” Webster said. With each successful field goal and each rejection of an opposing player’s shot by Webster, the crowd noise became louder and Elkton’s intensity seemingly grew. The fans fed off their team’s successes, and the Golden Elks clearly fed off the unwavering support from their classmates, teachers and friends. “The crowd’s been like this since the season began,” Artinger said. “You know, you got ‘Art’s Army’ over there who’s the student body, and that’s great. The more kids that are involved from the school that come in, the better it is for the school and for our basketball team.” Elkton’s Heading also registered five rebounds, five assists and three steals, while Domyr Mathis hit twice from downtown. The Golden Elks conclude regular-season play in 2006 at Joppatowne on Tuesday before joining all four of their county rivals at the Cecil Community College Holiday Tournament on Dec. 27 and 28.

Webster and Griffin Earn All Tournament Team

The battle of AAU teammates RJ Griffin and Larry Webster for the second straight year in the Green-N-Gold Holiday Tournament prove to be a one sided affair. Still trying to find its rhythm, the Elkton boys’ basketball team dropped a 52-37 contest to Charter School of Wilmington (Del.) in the 2007 Green-N-Gold Holiday Tournament’s Gold Bracket Championship game at Cecil Community College. The Force sliced through the Golden Elks’ defense in the opening frame, grabbing an 18-6 lead. Charter extended its advantage to 25-8 late in the half. Playing a slowed-down pace, Elkton junior Larry Webster managed just one block and one rebound in the first half, scoring zero points which was out of character for him. Charter was just hard on the boards. We weren’t boxing out. They were fundamental and boxing out. We were just trying to jump and get rebounds. Webster increased his defensive pressure in the second half, blocking five shots. His help defense was needed, however, because of poor perimeter defense. Charter made just 3-of-13 shots in the third period as the Golden Elks (4-3) slowly crept back into contention. They cut the deficit to 10 by the end of the third and pulled to within 42-37 with 3:06 remaining in the contest. Unable to take advantage of Charter’s poor free-throw shooting, the Force missed four straight from the stripe over the next two minutes. Griffin finished with six steals and eight points for the Force,Elkton, which is 8-12 all-time in the Green-N-Gold, was bidding for its first championship. Charter, meanwhile, won its third straight title and fourth in five years. The Force, who have never lost in the first round in seven appearances, are 11-3 all-time. Elkton’s Webster and Charter’s R.J. Griffin were each named to the Gold Bracket All-Tournament Team.

10th Annual Green-n-Gold Holiday Basketball Tournament

December 29, 2005
A trio of Diamond State Titans players were selected for the 2005 Green-n-Gold Holiday Basketball All Tournament Team. RJ Griffin(Charter),Larry Webster(Elkton)and Matt Walls(Charter). The first round pitted Charter School of Wilmington against Elkton High School and a head-to-head battle of AAU team mates,Webster vs Griffin&Walls. Charter prevailed with a 40-33 victory using their methodical motion offense to neutralize the big frontline of Elkton. Griffin led Charter with 12 points,3 rebounds and 2 assist, using his lanky 6'2" frame to score inside and from long range. Walls played a heady game from the point guard position and utilized his speed to blow past defenders for easy baskets are a quick dish to open shooters. Webster left his mark on the game as well, blocking 11 shots, grabbing 10 rebounds and chipping in 8 points.

In the championship game, Charter blew away Northeast High School, 68-44. Griffin again was hot from the field, finishing with 13 points,5 rebounds and 3 assist while playing in just two quarters as the bench was emptied in this blow out. Shout out to another Diamond State Titan,Freshman, Matthew Roach(Charter),the young fella was a beast on the boards and defense. He shut down Northeast's best player with excellent defense in the post, frustrating the 6'6"senior into a horrible game. Congratulations to all the Titans for getting it done!
