Fall 2018 - 13U - Sept 22 23 Weekend

22 September 2018

Game one of our first real double Hitter weekend saw the Reds playing the Bullet Proof Prospects.  It was a first for the Reds pitching staff with Landon Dupuis pitching for the first time from 60 ft, Holden Aguirre pitching for the first time ever and Noah Durance pitching for the first time with the Reds. Although they sometimes struggled to throw strikes the coaching staff was pleased with their performances.  Over all the Reds played well defensively and had a big double off the bat of Tyson Groves hitting in two of their 5 runs.  The Reds eventually lost 12-5.

Game two saw the Reds score both their first two batters, but that was it for their offence as they faced a tough Bullet Proof pitcher. Defensively the Reds were solid making only one error.  Wesley Knott took the loss but battled through it and Jayden Bailey came in and faced the minimum number of batters in 4 innings pitched.  The Reds came up short on this one with a 6-2 loss.

23 September 2018

On Sunday the Reds played the Ontario Cardinals a hard-hitting team from Ajax. The Reds started out playing great defence with a shoe string catch made by Matty Barr. Brice Mathews started the Game and went into the third tied 0-0, but the defence soon stuggled, and the Cardinal bats came to life. Jack Rispen came in and threw strikes but suffered the same fate finally Conner Hawke came in to finish the game.  In all the Reds pitchers only gave up four walks but we eventually fell to the hard-hitting Cardinals 19-3. One bright spot was when Jackson Peach made a diving catch to take away a sure hit.

The second game was started by Zach Tomilinson who pitched extremely well over four innings walking 3 and letting up 4 runs and eventually getting the win. Calum McKim came in to close the door throwing 2 scoreless innings capped off by a pass ball walk that turned into a double play (you can’t make this stuff up it was a 2-1-5 double play (you figure it out)). Our bats came alive with four players reaching base at every at bat – Brice Mathews, Jayden Bailey (going 2 for 3), Noah Durance (going 2 for 3) and Jack Rispen. A nice cap to the game was Liam McNiven having two quality at bats and driving in two runs.  The Reds won the game 14-4.

Fall 2018 - 13U - Sept 9th vs Kitchener Panthers

First Game of Fall Ball 2018 for the Central Ontario Reds 13U Team

The 13U Central Ontario Reds started their fall season this past weekend, splitting games with the Kitchener Panthers.  Game one was frustrating for the Reds when they had a little difficulty with the size of the big diamond.  They had trouble finding the strike zone (walking 14) and committing a few too many errors.  Honourable mentions go out to Brice Mathews who threw a five-pitch inning and Jackson Peach who made the spectacular line drive catch easily taking extra bases away from the panthers. As well, I would like to mention Liam McNiven who despite having a broken arm came down to Kitchener and helped out on the Bench, what a team player. The Reds eventually lost (11-2).

The Reds bounced back in the second game winning 11-4.  It was impressive to see them shake off the cobwebs from the first game and even though the Panther took an early lead they stayed focussed and fought back to erase the deficit. The entire team played well and contributed to the win.  Many players had quality at bats driving in runs when runners were in scoring position.  Jayden Bailey got the win going four innings and Wesley Knott came in and closed the Panthers down throwing three innings.  Hit of the game goes to Zack Tomlinson with a long double to the fence.

Spring Wrap Up 2018 - 13U Central Ontario Reds

The Central Ontario Reds started the tournament with all games on Saturday postponed due to weather, this forced us to get a workout session indoors allowing the boys to get some valuable at-bats before the games started on Sunday.

Our first game was excellent going back and forth. Starting pitcher Max Fittler pitched very well throwing lots of strikes and allowing the COR to get an early 3-1 lead. Alex Wickett had a strong day stealing multiple bases throughout the game while playing excellent short stop. Which included some heads-up communication between Alex and Ben Walker which allowed the two to get the lead runner at second on a softly hit ball to short stop.  It was a bang bang play and the trust and communication between the two got the player by a hair for a great play. As well, Alex and Will Timpano teamed up to toss out a would be base stealer. Will picked a ball in the dirt and came up throwing, Alex took the short hop and in one motion slapped down the tag hard to get the runner. Another highlight was when Cole Enright was asked to take 2 pitches while we stole second and third.  He than hit the ball to the right side while behind in the count, which scored the runner. Finally, after falling behind Landon Grant put us up late in the game with a monster 2 RBI shot to CF. Even though the boys eventually lost 7-6 in a well played game, the coaching staff are very proud of the team’s effort.

The second and final game of the tournament wasn’t as successful. The opposing team had a very potent offence, and with some help from the cold weather the Reds were not victorious. Our pitching staff of Gabe King, Nathan Kauer, Landon Grant and Andrew Harris all made quality work from the mound, throwing with confidence and in the most part throwing strikes.

Coaches Brayden and Jeremey loved working with the 13U boys and would like to thank them for all their hard work this year. We wish you the best of luck in the summer!

Spring Wrap Up 2018 – 12U Central Ontario Reds vs Novi Heat 12U Gold Team

The COR 12U team came up against are hard hitting Novi Heat 12U Gold Team in the final game of the Spring tournament. Although we were beat 15-1 we actually scored 1 of the 3 runs that were scored on the Novi’s all weekend. We had a shaky start giving up 12 in the first but Calum McKim came in and pitched very well only letting up 3 runs in 2 innings. Our loan run was scored by our youngest player Jackson Peach who started everything with a single and subsequently stole 2nd and 3rd. Landon Hutar came up big with a 2 out single to bring in our only run. Even with the loss today it was a successful tournament with the 12U team winning the first ever Spring tournament game. Well done boys.

Spring Wrap Up 2018 – 12U Central Ontario Reds vs Michigan Storm White team

The COR 12U team came up against a very good Michigan Storm White team in the second game falling 10-0. However, there were still a few bright spots in the game. Conner Hawke went 1 for 1 providing the Reds with our only hit. Zach Tomlinson pitched well over two innings receiving great defence from Jacob Nicholson who made a great catch and threw out one of the runners who ventured too far off 1st base. Aidan Watson pitching was superb keeping the storm off balance most of the time. All in all, a good learning experience for the boys to see how good some of the teams are in the USA.

Spring Wrap Up 2018 – 12U Central Ontario Reds vs Ann Arbor A’s

The COR 12U came out strong beating a pesky Ann Arbor A's with a come from behind win 6-5. Wesley Knott threw 3 strong innings and contributed with 3 RBI's and eventually scored the winning run. Other accolades go to Tyler Nichol who came in with the bases loaded in the final inning getting all three batters he faced out without allowing a run. As well Connor Hawke went 1 for 2 with 2 RBI's. Down by one run in the bottom of the 5th PJ Walker drew a walk and subsequently stole 2nd and 3rd, this set up Wesley's heroic 2 out double to tie the game. He scored when Landon Dupuis stuck out but realized the catcher dropped the ball. He ran hard to first forcing the catcher to overthrow 1st. Unusual but exciting way to win our first game in the spring tournament.  Great job boys.

The boys rallied in the final at bat scoring 4 runs but unfortunately came up short with a final score of 7-4.  Game 2 was very similar with a score of 10-4. The 14Us played Hun High School JV on March 13, 2018.  Dylan Paine started on the mound with a strong outing through the first two innings continually throwing strikes and working ahead in the count.  He however, did not receive the support from his defence.  Our two relief pitchers Jaxen Lehr and Josh McBride were both effective; however, they too suffered the same fate with a lack of support from our defence. With our cold bats and poor fielding, it was a tough game for the Reds; however, it proved to give the coaches a better insight on what to work on during practice on March 14th.

Spring Training 2018 - 16U Central Ontario Reds vs Dexter School JV

Greg Ingram came in and shut the door in the top of seven recording two strike outs to end the game.  The Red’s bats were quiet, only mustering 4 hits in the game. However, one of those hits came at a clutch time. Pinch hitter Wes Kobelka came in and hit a 2 run RBI single on the first pitch to give the Reds a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the 6th. The Reds did give one back in the top of seven but managed to hold on for the 3-2 win.

 Spring Training 2018 - 14U Central Ontario Reds vs 15U OBJ's

The 14Us had the pleasure of playing at historic Dodger town park today versus the Ontario Blue Jays 15U team. The boys started off extremely strong with a great pitching performance from starter Wyatt Slocum taking an early lead of 2-1 after the first.  Alex McNiven proved to be the Reds player of the game going 1 for 1 with a double and two walks scoring two of the three times he was on base. He also made a spectacular play at third taking away a hit from the Jays.  Zach Christie also deserves mentioning by getting on base all three times with a walk, hit by pitch and a single. Batting, through out the order showed improvement on the number of quality at bats the Reds had, with many players successfully moving runners into scoring position and working the counts.  The team battle hard through out the game eventually losing 18-3 to the older Jays.
