About VGBC

The Verona Girls' Basketball Club is a competitive youth basketball club for players entering grades 4 through 8 who reside in the Verona Area School District (This includes Verona, as well as, pockets of Fitchburg and southwest Madison). Our teams offer the opportunity for competitive play with teams from the Madison area and surrounding communities.

The idea of this program is to develop strong players for continued involvement in the Wildcat Basketball Program at Verona Area High School.

Skill Evaluations are held in early fall. Teams are then assembled based on the skill assessments. Verona Area Girls High School Basketball utilizes this program as a feeder program for those young players that have a strong desire to improve their basketball skills. This is a no-cut program, as we aim to find a spot for each student-athlete that wants to participate.

The Club follows the “A” team / “B” team philosophy in grades 6 through 8. Grades 4 and 5 will consist of teams of equal strength.

The season runs from about late October to February, with a number of optional post-season tournaments available for teams at an additional cost, as well as, the opportunity to continue the basketball season through the Verona Rec and Fitchburg Rec programs.

During the season, teams typically practice once or twice a week and play games mostly on weekend days. Teams will travel about 30 minutes to 1 hour from Verona to compete against area teams.

If financially there are some concerns, please reach out as we will make this opportunity available for your player.

What is the game structure?

Our club will typically play games in tournament format both inside and outside of Dane County.  Our 4th-8th grade girls can expect to travel 30 to 60 minutes for many of their weekend game commitments.

Verona will plan to have multiple teams at each grade level, and attempt to have each team compete against area communities with teams of relatively equal strength as often as possible.  This allows Verona to provide an opportunity for maximum participation in the Wildcat program.

What is the Time Commitment?

Girls youth basketball games are typically played on weekend days, Saturday and Sunday morning or afternoons. Typically, no games are scheduled Thanksgiving weekend.

Regular practices are normally held one to two times each week. Practices are typically 60 to 90 minutes long. Players are expected to attend all practices and games.

What happens after our competitive tournament/league season?

Basketball is a physically demanding sport and there is such a thing as too much basketball. However, we recognize that many families want to keep their daughters active in the sport through the winter months.

The Verona Girls Wildcat Basketball Club is structured so girls in Kindergarten through 6th Grade can pursue opportunities with the Verona and Fitchburg Recreation Departments once our competitive basketball season is over. For more information on those programs, click on the following links in late summer or early fall as details of their programs are posted to their Websites:
