April 1st-15th, 2021: The Camino Frances, from Pamplona to Burgos (135 miles)
The 500 mile Camino Frances is the most popular, and —according to many— the most scenic of the Camino routes, and the 135 mile portion of it from Pamplona to Burgos is widely considered of great beauty and interest. Our way will unfold through level terrain that makes for pleasant walking, and there will be towns at regular intervals where walkers can stop, dine, spend the night, or catch a bus or taxi if needed.

Trip highlights include:

  • Pamplona: a large town known for its annual Running of the Bulls festival and its Hemingway hangouts
  • Puente La Reina: an ancient town with a six-arched Roman bridge
  • La Rioja region: widespread, well-tended vineyards; excellent and inexpensive wines
  • The Granon albergue: situated in a church, this is one of the Camino’s most interesting albergues, convivial and offering a grand communal meal
  • Burgos and Leon: large towns with light-filled Gothic cathedrals, pubs, restaurants, shops, and amenities

August 16-29, 2021: The Camino del Norte: From Irun to Bilbao (95 miles)
The Camino del Norte hugs the north coast of Spain, where cooler weather and a coastal breeze make walking pleasant in August.  This route at times unfolds in view of cliffs and beaches, and is not only more rugged than the Camino Frances but offers fewer accommodations and longer distances between towns.  Nevertheless, it's still well-marked, well-traveled, and full of interests and amenities.

The Norte encompasses more than 500 miles.  Our itinerary includes only the first 95, ending in Blibao, though some members of our group may decide to continue on their own.  For those who desire, this journey will conclude with a bus ride to Pamplona, where participants will spend a full day before our time together ends.

Again, you must be at least 18 years old to join, unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Trip highlights include:

  • San Sebastian: a resort town with sandy beaches, surfers, and an oceanside promenade
  • Monastery de Zenarruza: a quiet, ancient hilltop monastery
  • Basque Culture: a distinct cuisine, architecture, culture, and history
  • Bilbao: the capital of Basque country, with hotels, restaurants, and two notable art museums
  • (optional) a full concluding day in the beautiful town of Pamplona
