What equipment is needed for field hockey?

  • For field hockey, players should have a field hockey stick (no, they are not right or left hand specific all players hold their sticks the same), a mouthguard, shin guards, and for NFYFH players will also need a pair of goggles. All equipment can be found at Dick's Sporting Goods where they have starter packs along with each piece of equipment individually.
  • We supply goalies with their appropriate gear as we have many players who try it each season!

What size stick should my daughter have?

  • In field hockey a good rule of thumb for getting the right size of field hockey stick is based off the players height (you can find charts on google) but a player may be more comfortable with a longer or shorter stick after a few years of playing. A field hockey stick should be around the players hips or bellybutton.

When are practices? / What does the schedule look like?

  • Practices are typically in the evenings two days a week for each team/age group with gameplay on the weekends (usually in the mornings/afternoons). We understand players may not be able to make it to all games/practices - all you have to do is let us know! We always fight for field time with many other organizations and teams - please remember we are volunteers doing our best.

Is field hockey cancelled because of the rain?

  • Field hockey plays in ALL weather EXCLUDING thunderstorms or heavy rain. We will communicate if a practice/game is cancelled.

What are the rules of the game? / Why did we lose possesion?

  • There are many rules to field hockey you may want to look into before our first game! You can learn by watching collegiate games or doing research on google.
  • Basic rules we recommend knowing before you get too deep in the rule book are: the ball cannot touch the players foot, you can only use the flat side of your field hockey stick, your stick cannot be too high in the air around other players, and please note field hockey is not a contact sport like lacrosse or ice hockey.

Why haven't I signed up yet?

  • Great question - we were wondering the same!
