STATE 'A' TENNIS TEAM RESULTS
2019 DIVISIONAL RESULTS
NW 'A'
DOGS DOMINATE DIVISIONAL
It was a strong closing day for Whitefish on Friday at the Northwestern A Divisional tennis tournament at Flathead Valley Community College and The Summit.
The Bulldogs had the singles champions in Gracie Smyley and Brendan Buls and boys doubles champs in Mark Anderson/Colter Upton.
Polson’s Berkley Ellis and Qia Harlan won the girls doubles title.
Buls and Anderson were defending divisional champions. Anderson won doubles last year with Forrest Kobelt.
Whitefish also won the team titles for boys and girls. Polson was second and Columbia Falls third.
The last time Whitefish swept divisional team titles was 2006.
It’s the second straight for the boys and their third in four years.
“I couldn’t be happier to see this group of guys win another divisional title,” Whitefish boys coach Chris Schwaderer said.
“The camaraderie that I see every day is really special. These kids love to play tennis and help each other get better.”
The top four finishers in singles and doubles advance to Class A state play at Flathead Valley Community College next week.
Smyley defeated Hannah Schweikert 2-6, 6-4, 7-5.
It was the second meeting of the season for the two standouts. Smyley won the first one in straight sets.
“It was excruciating as a coach (to watch), and it was the same for the parents and the participants,” Whitefish girls coach Patrick Dryden said.
“It had to be a fans delight.”
Smyley trailed 5-2 in the first set and battled back from there.
“She just eliminated her unforced errors (after that),” Dryden said, “still played aggressively.
“Hannah played extremely well,” he continued.
“She hit everything back, put a lot of spin on the ball. It was tough to break her serves. She served so well.”
Buls rolled by Joe McDonald of Polson in his final 6-0, 6-0.
“Brendan Buls is a deserving champion,” Schwaderer said.
“He worked his way through the bracket with pure efficiency. Brendan has worked so hard to get where he is, and I admire his commitment to the game and his cerebral approach. Not only does he want to make himself better, but he is also driven to help the other players on the team. He cares as much about their game as he does about his own. If this kid is not a tennis coach some day, I’ll be shocked.”
Anderson/Upton defeated John Gilk/Camryn Lingle of Columbia Falls in their final, 6-2, 6-2.
“Mark Anderson and Colter Upton are equally special,” Schwaderer said.
“They were both beginners three years ago, but due to their athleticism and love for tennis, they progressed rapidly. I give a lot of credit for their success to the fact that they are multi-sport athletes who know how to compete. They have not bought into the idea that they have to specialize in one sport in order to succeed. The variety of skills that they bring to tennis has helped them to be as successful as they are.”
The Whitefish boys and Polson girls are defending Class A state champions.
Correction
It was incorrectly reported that John Gilk and Tristan Grein of Columbia Falls finished first in boys doubles at the Northwestern A Divisional tennis tournament last year in Friday’s divisional tournament story. They finished second. Whitefish’s Mark Anderson and Forrest Kobelt were the champions.

SWA
Corvallis Frenchman qualifies with host of Blue Devils, Hamilton Freshman snags SWA singles crown
HAMILTON — When 17-year-old Aubrey Poitier signed up to be an international exchange student, he hoped to experience a new culture and go out of his comfort zone.
"When you go to a place and you meet people, you realize how much more life there is out of the little area you live," said Poitier, who is from Western France. "To experience new friends, this landscape — wow, it's awesome — and I really wanted to try American football. That was really funny."
He checked that box with the Blue Devils football team in the fall.
Now Poitier also gets to experience Montana's Class A state tennis tournament
Corvallis' No. 2 singles player from across the pond won his consolation semifinal matchup Friday against Dillon's Sam Jones, 6-4, 6-2, to clinch a state berth. He then took home the bronze medal at the weekend's Southwest A divisional tennis tournament in Hamilton against Dillon's Matt Knight, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, using a flair that was fashioned overseas and a strategy perfected against his host-family "brother" and Blue Devil teammate.
The style came from watching some of the world's best players on television back home.
"He's got that Aubrey style, it's a little bit of that European style. He likes the touch-shots and the angles. He likes to put action on the ball," Corvallis boys' coach Chris Maul-Smith said. "Aubrey came out with some experience from France, he loves to watch tennis and he can use that as a style and a model.
"When he was out there playing today, he had it in mind what he wanted to do."
The game plan Poitier used in the consolation semifinal — a slew of returns and well-placed lob shots to the back of the court — was honed while playing Corvallis' No. 1 singles player Caleb Warnken.
Warnken placed second at the Southwest A divisional after falling in a thrilling three-set match with defending Class A state champ Bradley Rakich of Dillon, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. The same long lanky frame that helped Warnken become one of the best tennis players in Western Montana and capture a silver medal on Friday was one Poitier has had to learn how to hit around at practice and at home, when the two play game after game of table tennis.
"He always wins, but I'm getting closer every time," Poitier said of Warnken, laughing. "He's very good at volleys, and he's got longer arm — that's my excuse every time (Warnken wins). My thing against him is lobs. I have to lob against him and hit my passing shots."
The scheme worked against Jones and qualified Poitier for state as a host of Blue Devil fans and teammates at Hamilton's Canyons Athletic Club applauded their adopted athlete.
"Back in France we compete in clubs. It's very interesting and very funny (compete for a school) and have that spirit behind you," Poitier said. "You want to win for them. It's very cool."
Poitier will have quite a few from Corvallis joining him at the Class A state tournament next week in Kalispell, too.
***
Along with Poitier and Warnken, the Blue Devil boys also bring doubles partners Ryan Hubbard and Jaymark Liedle. The two battled back from a semifinal loss against Butte Central to eventually capture the consolation championship. Liedle and Hubbard fell behind in the third-place game, too, dropping the first set, 6-3, but the boys maintained their focus to gather the third seed from the Southwest.
"When we played Butte Central we started out slow. Every time we started out slow," Hubbard said. "It was like warming up for us, but we got it together.
"We started playing a little loose. We started building each other up," Liedle added.
With Warnken, Poitier, Liedle and Hubbard all scoring points, the Blue Devil boys — co-defending Class A champs — brought home a second-place divisional trophy.
The Corvallis girls took first by sending a slew to state, seven total, thanks in part to stellar doubles play. It was an all Corvallis doubles final, with the tournament's top seed, Megan Kirkland and Christina Weidkamp, meeting No. 7 seed pairing Molly Powell and Bailey Jessop.
The underdogs won, too, as the Powell/Jessop duo took a long Saturday afternoon battle against their teammates in a tiebreaker set, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Both squads are through to state, though.
"This is so awesome, it's never happened for me in all the years I've been coaching. The thing about this is no matter what, we're gonna win this match," Blue Devils girls' tennis coach Mike Fehr said before the championship doubles match. "We're taking a whole ton of players. This is the first time I've ever taken seven players."
In the girls' singles championship match, Corvallis was unable to capture the title as Madeline DeLeo, a Blue Devil sophomore, fell in battle of underclassmen to Hamilton freshman Eliana Foss.
Both girls showed class beyond their years throughout the tournament and on Saturday.
"Madeline played great, they're young kids and they're both going to be around playing some good tennis for a long time, they're both really improving their games," Hamilton coach Jeff Lewis said. "Madeline hit her corner shots yesterday really well to get here and today Eliana just landed her power shots.
"That's becoming (Foss') game, she's been working on it this year. She's a strong girl and she's got the control and she can bang that ball over like nobody's business."
Foss' strong forehand shots indeed ruled the day as the Bronc tennis player took home the divisional title in her first-ever tournament run.
"I'm too excited for words," Foss said, neatly summing up her emotions on winning the Southwest A title.
She takes the Southwest A's No. 1 seed to state and DeLeo will be No. 2. Butte Central's Tricia Joyce, the No. 2 seed entering divisional play, bested previously top seeded Ashlyn Sandall, of Dillon, in the consolation final. That gives Joyce the third seed at state and Sandall a four.
Rounding out the Top 4 in boys' doubles was Dillon's Mark Southam and Nathanile Leonardson as tourney champs and Butte Central's Aidan Petritz and Guido Ossello at No. 2.
On the girls' side, Stevensville's Jamyn Beller and Callie Cavill captured the consolation championship with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Corvallis' Cecily Gerber and Danielle Coates. For Beller and Cavill, who made it to state last year as a four seed, this year's third-place finish meant a lot.
"We always try to stay positive because that's how you can lose a game quickly if you get negative," Cavill said. "We both wanted to improve on last year and we knew we had to fight for it."

Whitefish boys, Polson girls take NWA net titles
May 18, 2018 at 5:00 am | The Daily Inter Lake
LIBBY — Whitefish dominated the boys field while Polson finished ahead of the pack to take the girls title at the Northwest A divisional tennis tournament on Thursday and Friday.
The Bulldog boys racked up 71 points, more than doubling runner-up Polson’s 35. Polson’s girls tallied 51 points to Whitefish’s 39.
Whitefish accounted for three of the four semifinalists in boys singles. Brendan Buls lost only two games over his final two matches to take the title easily.
The Bulldogs also won the boys doubles championship, as Mark Anderson and Forrest Kobelt bulldozed Columbia Falls’ John Gilk and Tristan Grein 6-1, 6-3 in the finals.
Kyler Lundeen and Berkley Ellis of Polson overcame Whitefish’s Aubrey Hanks and Olivia Potthoff 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in a competitive girls doubles final.
The Pirates also claimed the girls singles title via Shea McGuinness, who defeated Claire Carloss of Whitefish 7-6, 6-2 in the championship.
The top four finishers in singles and doubles advanced to next week’s Class A state tournament beginning next Thursday in Polson and Ronan.

Hardin boys, girls sweep team titles at Eastern A tennis

Hardin's David Evans reaches to hit the ball in the doubles final with partner Ben Noteboom at the Eastern A Tennis Divisional at Elks Tennis Center on Friday.
BETHANY BAKER, Billings Gazette
BILLINGS – Being a singles tennis player can be a lonely place. Just you and your thoughts, good or bad. Billings Central’s Emma Putnam tries to be her own pick-me-up.
“It’s kind of hard to not get in your head sometimes,” Putnam said Friday afternoon at the Elks Tennis Center, “so I normally cheer myself on. It sounds pretty lame.”
Sound, consistent shot-making helps, too, and Putnam had a lot of that in topping Hardin’s Sharmayne Hardy for the Eastern A girls singles title. Hardy’s a steady player, as well, so Putnam’s 6-3, 6-3 victory was a matter of staying within herself, Putnam said.
So what does Putnam say to Putnam in moments of crisis or calm?
“Like, ‘it’s OK,’ ‘you’ve got it, get the next one,’ “ Putnam said. “Or when I end up hitting a winner I’ll in my head use that point to focus on the next one. You really have to take it from point to point, you can’t focus on the big picture, because when you’re down it’s very hard to get back up.”
The two-day tournament – a qualifier for next weekend’s state tournament -- concluded Friday evening with Hardin claiming the other three titles and both team titles, as well.
Makiko Reisig and Kate Murdock went to the wire to beat Glendive’s Skyler Scarpholt and Talia Zimdars 6-4, 2-6, 7-5. It’s their third year playing together as a doubles team, but it’ll be their first trip to state.
“Complete bliss,” Reisig said. “It was like …”
“Finally,” Murdock finished, eliciting a laugh from both players.
The boys doubles final not only featured teammates against teammates, but brother against brother. As such, the match between Hardin’s Ricky Hill and Jonathon Noteboom and David Evans and Ben Noteboom was a bit contentious at times (a line judge was called for shortly into the first set).
When it was over, though, and Hill and Jonathon Noteboom had claimed a 7-5, 6-0 win, there were hugs all the way around. Evans and Ben Noteboom led 5-2 in the first set, but Hill and Jonathon Noteboom won the next 11 games.
“On a crossover I told my partner, let’s make the greatest comeback we can,” Hill said.
And how was it brother against brother, and then beating that brother for a title?
“It’s … it’s indescribable,” said Jonathon Noteboom, the elder of the siblings by two years. “I don’t even know what to say. It’s hard, but … I don’t even know what to say.”
Gabe Passes gave Hardin its third divisional championship when he beat Billings Central’s Jake O’Leary 6-4, 6-3 in the boys singles final.
Passes was aggressive, using well-placed approach shots to get to the net on several occasions. Once Passes was there, O’Leary had difficulty getting the range on his lobs and Passes took advantage.
“That’s the first time I’ve ever really tried it,” Passes said about being a net player. “Before, if the ball came right back at me, I’d kind of get scared.”
Then with a chuckle, he added: “That’s why I don’t play doubles.”
The Bulldogs boys had 68 points, followed by Billings Central (43), Miles City (3) and Glendive (2). Hardin’s girls finished with 47 points, Billings Central was second (30), Glendive third (19) and Miles City fourth (12).
In the consolation finals, Billings Central’s Elliott Keller defeated Hardin’s Jace Guptill 6-1, 6-2 in boys singles; Hardin’s Famous Lefthand and Ryan Old Crow beat Billings Central’s Maguire Payne and Ben Harsha 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in boys doubles; Miles City’s Emily Toennis edged Hardin’s Abigail Noteboom 7-6 (5), 6-4 in girls singles; and Billings Central’s Abby Fitzgerald and Blayne Meyer defeated Hardin’s Cailei Cummins and Mary Anne Herrara 6-1, 6-1 in girls doubles.
All those players qualified for the state tournament, which is next weekend in Ronan and Polson.

STATE 'A' TENNIS FINAL RESULTS.
Whitefish girls win state crown
BOZEMAN -- The Whitefish girls' tennis team brought home the top hardware from the State A tournament for just the second time in school history as the tournament wrapped up Friday at the Bobcat Tennis Center.
The Bulldogs' first state title came in 2004.
"It’s something that was always in the back of our minds but nothing we really discussed," Whitefish coach Patrick Dryden said. "I think we were flying under the radar and kind of snuck up on the entire field this week."
An all-Whitefish girls' doubles final contributed plenty of points to the Bulldogs' dominating win. Katie Fyall and Anna Peterson teamed up to down teammates Heather Luedke and Hannah Madsen, 6-2, 6-3, in the finals, giving Whitefish 30 points to second-place Billings Central's 19.
"The kids really battled against each other every day in practice and just got better and better," Dryden said.
Their semifinal matches ended within minutes of each other. Fyall and Peterson took a 6-2, 7-5 win over Marenah Crockett and Ceeara Staiger of Glendive, while Luedke and Madsen defeated Jennifer Womack and Nicole Thompson of Dillon, 6-4, 6-4.
"We really didn't show the nerves that some of the other teams had," Dryden said. "We were very comfortable. I think once you get the ball rolling it gets contagious. (Fyall) and (Peterson) won their semifinal and then (Luedke) and (Madsen) won the other semifinal 10 minutes later. Katie and Anna pulled out a huge win when they took down the Glendive team (Marenah Crockett and Ceeara Staiger). They were undefeated and runner-up last year. We jumped on top of them 3-0 and never let up.
"I think we kind of caught them by surprise. We used the Aussie (I) formation and I think it caused them some difficulties. In the second set we were behind 4-1 and battled back. We just swatted a lot of balls out of the air and next thing you knew we had the pressure on them."
Dryden just stood back and watched as the two teams battled in the final.
"You don’t really coach, you just kind of savor the moment," he said. "There were a lot of smiles all the way around."

Harrison and Barclay Fagg of Billings Central knew if their paths crossed at any point before the final tennis matches of their high school careers the fusion would result in two emotional puddles.
“We literally have not been able to speak to each other today because we’d cry if we do,” Barclay said moments after her methodical 6-0, 6-0 dispatching of Hardin’s Madisan Chavez at the Bobcat Tennis Center gave her a second consecutive Class A girls' singles title. “It’ll be interesting to see how it goes afterward.”
The Fagg family contingent of more than 20 found out less than an hour later, after Harrison fended off former state champion Jeff Miller of Havre 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) for his first singles title and third overall.
As Harrison hugged his rival and coaches on one side, Barclay wiped her eyes as she crossed the court and met her brother for a poignant final embrace. Nearby, their mom, Karen, dabbed tears and their father, Russell, watched with a lump in his throat as their children hugged and posed for photos.
Harrison’s victory carried added significance by seeming to lock up Billings Central’s fourth consecutive boys' state title. As it turned out, a rousing three-set doubles victory by Simon Marshall and Joey Nichols over Glendive’s Josh Hoffer and Jory Opp a short time earlier proved pivotal to the Rams’ four-point edge over the Red Devils.
Alex Raymond of Hamilton fell in the semifinals and wound up fourth.

DIVISIONAL 'A' TENNIS FINAL RESULTS
Northwest A tennis: Whitefish boys, Polson girls win divisional
POLSON -- The sheer number of Whitefish boys and Polson girls that made it to the second day of the Northwest A tennis tournament helped power the two teams to a conference title.
The Bulldog boys, who topped second-place Polson 60-43, put three into the singles' semifinals, and it was an all-Whitefish championship. Max Smiley earned bragging rights among his fellow Bulldogs by taking the title over Eric Holdhusen, 6-2, 6-2.
Stevensville's Colton Belcourt, who lost to Holdhusen in the semifinals, was the only other representative from a different school in the boys' singles championship bracket.
The Polson boys stole some points from the eventual champions, though, as Cadis Chowning and Matt Sitter teamed up to take the doubles title. They beat Whitefish's Ryan Brown and Cole Turgeon in the semis, and Chowning/Sitter won the title against fellow Pirates Quaid Harlan and Colin Kenney by injury default.
The Polson girls trimmed Whitefish, 54-42. Pirates Mollie Lemm and Marlee Congdon each won their semifinal matches and squared off in an all-Polson title match. Congdon won that one, 7-5, 6-4.
Whitefish represented both squads in the girls' doubles championship. Katie Fyall and Anna Peterson beat the duo of Hannah Madsen and Heather Luedke.

Dillon dominates for SWA tennis titles
The Dillon Beavers will be well-represented at next weekend's Class A state tennis tournament after dominating the competition at the Southwestern A divisional in Hamilton.
The Beavers relied on the strength and depth of their doubles duos, sending all six, three girls and boys teams, to next weekend's state meet.
That helped the Beavers to 69 points on the girls' side, well clear of second place Corvallis' 27. The Beaver boys finished with 53 to score a convincing divisional crown.
Butte Central's girls finished third with 18 points, while the Maroon boys were fourth with 17.
The Beaver girls saw the doubles duos of Kodi Ferris and Rachael Nye meet with Jen Womack and Nicole Thompson for the district crown after both clinched state bids with semifinal wins.
Womack and Thompson then picked up a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 win for the divisional title.
In the consolation finals, Tessa Sawyer and Adrianna Southam gave the Beavers a third place finish after beating Ali Guldseth and Kellsie Quinn, 6-3, 6-4. Both duos will be at state next weekend.
In singles play, Dillon's Mariah McClure and Maggie Magee met in the finals of the winner's bracket, with McClure winning 6-2, 6-1 for the district title and the No. 1 seed at state.
Like their girls' doubles teammates, all three of Dillon's boys' doubles teams clinched bids to the state tournament.
The Gunnar Maisch and Isaak Koslosky took on Kyson Wilson and Todd Nordahl in the winner's bracket finals before Wilson and Nordahl emerged with a 6-3, 6-3 win for the title.
In the consolation finals, Butte Central's Sam Sterns and Cam Johnson dropped Mark Southam and Luke Peterson, 6-4, 6-2. Sterns and Johnson are the only Butte Central boys who clinched a spot at state. Both duos in the consolation finals needed three set wins to clinch their trips.
In boys' singles action, Brad Rakich of Dillon was the lone local player to clinch a spot in Bozeman next week, beating teammate Caleb Jones in three sets in the consolation semifinals to clinch a spot, then taking third with a 6-0, 7-6 (7-2) win over Josh Smith of Corvallis.

Blue Pony netters get off to a warm start
March 29, 2016

Havre senior Meggan Smith placed fourth in girls singles at last Saturday's Cut Bank Invitational. The season-opening tournament was a big success for the Blue Ponies.
No matter the scores, or the level of competition, it was a successful start to the 2016 Havre High tennis season. And it was mainly because, even though it's still March, the Blue Ponies played, and they played a lot.
The Havre boys and girls got plenty of time on the courts on a rare, mild day in Cut Bank, as the Ponies took part in the Cut Bank Invitational last Saturday.
"This early in the year, or really, all spring long, your first hope is just to get outside and get on the court," said HHS head coach George Ferguson. "And we were able to do that on Saturday. It was a nice day in Cut Bank, and we played a lot of tennis. So really, we couldn't have gotten the season started any better."
As for the matches, Havre also won plenty of them, against the likes of Cut Bank, Conrad and Central A rival Lewistown.
The Pony boys got a singles championship from senior Jeff Miller, who beat teammate Dustin Haas in the championship match. Meanwhile, the doubles duo of Jake Sedahl and Trey Hanson won the doubles crown, while Nate Korb and Kennedy McKay finished third.
"Our older kids were pretty sharp," Ferguson said. "I saw a lot of positives out of our returning boys. There was certainly some match rust, but overall, for our first matches of the year, I saw a lot of good things. But more importantly, we also were better able to define exactly what we need to work on going forward."
The Ponies also got a second-place finish from freshman Tommy Brown in the No. 3's singles bracket, and overall, Havre took a lot of young players to the tournament. On the girls side, the Ponies had four first-time players in their lineup, and all of them, Marcee Murphy, Katie Donaldson, Dakota Acor and Caprice Gobin won at least one match their first time out. Acor wound up placing third in the No. 3's bracket.
"We took a lot of kids who were getting their first taste of high school tennis," Ferguson said. "And that's so much fun. It's fun to watch them learn, watch them kind of figure things out as the day goes on. And all of those kids got to play a lot, so it was a really valuable day for them."
Havre's varsity girls also got plenty of time on the court in Cut Bank. The senior duo of Reggie Bernard and Alara Vogel placed second in doubles, while Rainey Stoner and Madison Huebsch finished third. Havre also got a fourth-place finish by senior Meggan Smith in singles.
"I thought our varsity girls did a really good job," Ferguson said. "The other teams were short-handed on the girls side, so a lot of our kids ended up playing each other. But, the most important thing was just to play, to get the rust off and gain match experience, and all of our girls did a great job of doing that, of taking advantage of just being out there and getting to play again."
And at the end of the day, playing was the most important thing for the Blue Ponies, who will next travel to Conrad this Saturday, where they'll see basically the same competition, only in a dual format.
"We learned a lot on Saturday," Ferguson said. "We got started, and now we have a reference for what needs to happen next. So, all the kids did great, and we'll go back to work this week, sticking with the basics and fundamentals. And then in Conrad, we'll really see how quickly we're improving because the kids will play a lot of the same kids they did in Cut Bank. And improving every day, every weekend, that's our main goal right now."
