Riverview Minor Basketball Association

RULES

1.  No zone defense, man-to man defense only. Each player can guard one opponent only. No double-teaming!  Help defense is allowed (i.e. when an unguarded player has an unobstructed approach to the net, the defense is allowed to temporarily switch defenders or “help” defend and coverage remains only one-on-one.)

  1. All physical contact should be strongly discouraged!

Points will be awarded for the following fouls:

1)   Fouls committed when a player is not in the act of shooting (offensive & defensive fouls) - the fouled team is awarded 1 point and given possession of the ball on the sideline.

2)   Fouls committed when a player is in the act of shooting, but the ball does not go in, the fouled team is awarded 2 points and given possession of the ball on the sideline.

3)   Fouls committed when a player is in the act of shooting and the ball does go in, the fouled team is awarded 2 points for the basket plus 1 more point for the foul and given possession of the ball on the sideline.

Note:  If the referees feel that players are intentionally fouling, the game will be stopped, the coach and respective player will be warned, and the player may be ejected from the game if this fouling or rough play continues.

  1. No defense is to be played in the backcourt. The offensive team cannot lose possession of the ball in their backcourt as a result of defensive play by the opposing team. This half court pick-up will occur after a defensive rebound, a successful basket, or a change of possession.

4.   Players cannot go back over half.

5.      Double dribbling and traveling will not be allowed.

6.      Jump balls will alternate possession.

7.   Prior to every basketball game, one player from each team will share the task of reading our Fair Play Code to the fans, players, and coaches (one paragraph each). Please advise players to read over this code ahead of time and to speak loudly and clearly. Please review copy attached.

8.   Prior to the start of each game, each team will take 30 lay-ups. If you have 15 players, each player will take two lay-ups. All successful shots will be tallied for the team and counted toward the Team Lay-Up Championship. One referee will be assigned to each team to keep count of this score.

9.   Games will consist of twelve 4-minute shifts. No half-time breaks, but teams will change ends. In the event of a tie the game will remain as a tie unless this is a tournament game when a winner must be decided. Tournament tie teams will play extra 4-minute shifts, following normal shift rules with the next players in sequence (see rule 11).

10. For each game, coaches should do their best to field 15 players. Teams will be permitted to play with a minimum of 10 players. Any team with less than 10 players at game time will have to forfeit the game, but the game should still be played with the possibility of sharing players. This reinforces our goal to promote sportsmanship and friendly competition.

11.  Every effort must be made to ensure all players get equal playing time.  Jersey’s or Pinnies must be assigned to players prior to the start of the game in sequential order beginning with #1.  Lines will be recorded by the timekeeper prior to the start of each shift.

Number each and every player and rotate them sequentially throughout the game.  This order is continued in the case of an overtime shift.

      e.g. 13 players

shift 1 - players 1,2,3,4,5

shift 2 - players 6, 7,8,9, 10

shift 3 - players 11, 12, 13, 1,2

shift 4 - players 3, 4, 5, 6, 7

shift 5 - players 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 etc., etc.

Note:   To encourage fair play and equal participation, all coaches must adhere to these "shift" rules.

     COACHING

1.      Coaches should encourage and keep as many players as practical for their teams. A team roster should be passed in to the league coordinator by season start.

2.      Coaches are encouraged to do most of their coaching during their practice so that during the games they can concentrate on changing lines and instructing players when they are on the bench.  Positive coaching during the game is welcome.

3.      Coaches are to discourage physical contact and concentrate on teaching basketball skills.

4.      All players are to remain dressed and on the bench until the end of the game. Upon completion of the game, the teams shall shake hands.

5.      Players are to remain on the bench during the game. They are only to sit on the floor at the end of the bench if there is not enough room on the bench. They should not be running to the washroom unless it is absolutely necessary.

Please ensure the area around your bench is cleaned before leaving the game.

6.      Coaches are to organize players quickly for their lay-ups to be taken prior to the game. A maximum of 30 shots are taken and all players must have equal opportunity to shoot.

7.      Coaches are not permitted to make any comments to the referees during the game. Under no circumstances shall a coach or a player openly dispute a referee's decision. A penalty of 2 points and a possession may be called at the discretion of the referee. You may talk to the referees after the game to clarify something or to offer an encouraging remark, but derogatory comments will not be tolerated.

8.      Each team should have a minimum of two grade 4's and four grade 5's. The remainder of the team can be made up of grade 6's.

9.      Coaches are encouraged to practice at least once a week.

10.    In situations where a team is evidently much better than the opposition, the winning coach shall take steps to prevent a “blow-out". e.g. stop the score clock, implement strategies for team development that may not emphasize scoring (greater passing or working in of weaker player to a more prominent role). The losing team's players do not have to know about your "new strategy".
