Berkeley Basketball Mission Statement:

# 1 Goal:

Provide the best HS basketball experience. Coaches, facilities, winning etc.

Emphasis at each level

Having fun?

# 2 Goal

Skill development. Concentrate on the process. Success (wins and losses).

Our program will provide an opportunity for kids to excel

players have moved on to play in college. Playing college is the exception not the norm. As of now only 3% of all high school players in the nation get to play college basketball.

Program Expectations:

All athletes are expected to attend all required, practices, meetings and contests.

Player Conduct: Players are responsible for conducting themselves in a manner that represents Berkeley, their families and their coaches both in the classroom and on the basketball court.

Parent conduct: Parents are encouraged to sit together and cheer for all players on the team.

Please do not coach your son or give advice during the games. This can complicate things when a player hears to many voices it can cause issues within your son and the game plan that the coach has laid out.

Practices are off limits, this is the time for the coaching staff and the team to bond and improve without distraction.

Athletes shall abide by all regular school policies.

Cuts and or Playing time.

I will handle all decisions on cuts with input from the rest of the staff. We will begin cuts after 3 days of tryouts this will continue until we are finished. This means until you get a email from me welcoming you and your son to the team tryouts are not finished. If your son makes it through a round of cuts this does not mean they made the team, there always are numerous rounds of cuts. Your son has made the team when you get a welcome email from me.

Sometimes you might want to ask your son some of these questions so you can get an idea where they fall within the competition for a roster spot.

When is your son picked by his peers during open gym?

How many players are competing for the same position on the team?

STORY- mom calling me about her son telling her he made the team after 1st round of cuts. then when the player was cut in the next round he was frustrated and the mom called me telling me that i teased her son by making it through cuts. After explaining to her there is more than one round of cuts she was not very happy but understood.

 13-15players on the varsity

 13-15 on the JV

14-17 on the freshman (Robert story)

Your son will not be guaranteed a spot or playing time on the team because of what club they played with in the summer. Your son could make the team even if they didn't play for a club in the summer. Your son is not guaranteed a spot on the team because of what camp they went to in the summer.

# 3 Goal: Give everyone a fair chance. Very competitive. Based on attitude, effort, cooperation, and basketball skills.

Playing time.

Coaches decision, earn your way in, earn your way out.

Conflict or any issues etc. Communication-through the players 1st to the coach. If there is a issue and you want it to be rectified then talk to the coach. if you skip going to the coach how can we help if you don’t come to us?

Winning on the pro level is required

Winning on the College level is expected

Winning on the high school level should be pleasant by-product of doing what

we are really suppose to be doing, developing young men into productive citizens and leaders.

Communication

It is the players responsibility to handle communication with the coach. This seems very difficult for some but this is not negotiable. As a parent if you want to double check if your son has taken care of his communication that is fine.

Parent meetings if necessary will take place with your son being present in the meeting. There must be an opportunity to find out where the breakdown is happening and I do not believe this will happen if all are not in attendance.

(Former player story about blaming coaches to get his dad off of his back at the dinner table)

I did not dedicate my life to educate and coach kids to not like your kid.

If the freshman and JV coaches were perfect they would be varsity coaches. They are learning and growing as coaches as well as the players.

At times you can't get them to take the garbage out and you ground him I can't get him to box out or remember a game plan and he gets benched so what's the difference. We are both trying to teach him how to accept responsibility, you by parenting me by coaching.
