Travel League Overview

The travel league is designed for players who desire to play basketball in a more competitive manner.  The travel league requires a higher level of commitment from both the player and the parents, plus additional travel team fees.

GRABA’s traveling program is offered to grades 3-6 depending on interest and availability of players and coaches. Tryouts will be held to determine teams consisting of 8-10 players based on skill level. If there are both a sufficient number of interested players and talent, a second travel team may be added. Any player who does not make a traveling team may play in the House League.

The GRABA traveling season begins in November and runs to the end of March. Traveling teams typically practice 2-3 times a week depending on gym space, and will play in approximately 8-9 weekend tournaments over the course of the season. While playing close to Grand Rapids is preferred, expect some travel to the Twin Cities.

Time Commitment

Inherent to the success of GRABA's Travel Program is the level of dedication and commitment of the participants. Participation in the GRABA Travel Program REQUIRES A GREATER LEVEL OF COMMITMENT than the GRABA House League program. We strongly recommend both parents and potential players consider their schedules and conflicts before trying out for traveling basketball. If players and parents have a clear idea of the level of obligation the Travel League demands and are able to plan ahead to meet those obligations, it alleviates the stress caused to both the player and the team when a player misses practices, games, or even tournaments. Please keep in mind that attendance at practice is as important as tournaments and games. Participation in another non-school traveling program during the season should be secondary to GRABA travel basketball.

Tryouts

Tryouts will consist of a series of drills and game type situations that are conducted by independent evaluators. Board members or parents with children in that grade level will not be considered as evaluators but may assist in helping with skills work.  Tryouts will also be “closed” to everyone except the players, evaluators, head coaches, and the travel coordinator. Please note that players who attend tryouts are not guaranteed to make a travel team.
