Guidelines to Earn a Varsity Letter 

A³  Criteria:

Each Swimmer will receive 20 points for Attendance, Attitude and Academics (A³). For each practice missed 2 points will be deducted and for continual less than positive attitude and/or lack of team support 1 point will be deducted. The latter will be coaches’ discretion. Swimmers will not gain any points for academics they can only lose all of them by losing eligibility.  If at any point in the season the swimmer becomes ineligible to participate due to grades will result in an automatic loss of all points.

For attendance each swimmer will receive 3 homework passes that they can use to miss practice for homework reasons without being penalized.

Performance Criteria:

Each swimmer and diver will receive points for their best times/scores in any given event they swim/dive throughout the season.   (Examples can be found below).

These criteria will work hand-in-hand to determine varsity status.

You must collect 120 points between the two of them.  Here are three different scenarios:

1.    If you collect 120 or more points based on a collection of keeping many of your A³ points and performance points, CONGRATULATIONS you will earn a varsity letter.

2.    If you don’t quite collect 120 or more points based on the above criteria BUT you did not lose any of your A³ there is in all things Coaches Discretion to grant the letter anyway!

3.    If you collect 120 or more points on performance alone because you lost all of your A³ points you will not earn a varsity letter.

Suzy Swimmer is our team’s free-styler, not the fastest, but a hard worker; the following are her best times in all 4 freestyle events and the points she receives:

Debbie Depth is one of our team’s all-around swimmers and fills in wherever needed to be that extra point scorer and get in for 5^th place at most of our dual meets.

Nancy Newcomer is brand new to the sport of swimming, learning a lot, being a great team member, improving every day, but because of her newness to the sport she has not mastered the butterfly and breaststroke well enough to compete in them legally.
