Wee Arrows host South Vienna Jets

On this very hot and humid Labor Day weekend the Park Layne wee Arrows and the South Vienna Jets faced off in the second week of the 2015 Little Mad River Valley League football season.
The first game was between the Wee Arrows Apache Squad and the Jets pee wee team.
The Wee Arrows played very good defense, despite the weather conditions, holding the Wee Jets to just 13 points in the first half. Unfortunately, the Apaches could not find any successful offense during the game. Ultimately falling to the Jets 26 to 0.

In the second match up the Wee Arrows varsity battled with the Jets varsity in a back and forth game of field position all afternoon. Facing a seven to zero deficit right before halftime, the Wee Arrows found themselves with a first and goal from the two yard line. After a good defensive play on first down, the Arrows ran up the middle to cross the goal line. Unfortunately, the officials had thrown the dreaded yellow flag onto the field, calling the play back because of a Wee Arrows false start. The penalty effectively ended the Wee Arrows chances for scoring on that drive. The halftime score was South Vienna 7 , Wee Arrows 0.
The second half started with a long drive by the Jets to increase their lead to 13 to 0.
The Wee Arrows never got close to their end zone again, and despite the outstanding defense effort, the Jets prevailed 19 to 0.

The last match of the  Labor day weekend was between the Junior Varsity Squads of both teams.
The Jets JV kicked in the afterburners and ramped up the offense scoring 41 points against the Wee Arrows J.V.
The highlight of the Wee Arrows day was the performance of Austin Ernst. Austin continued his excellent play from the week before adding 2 touchdowns and an extra point conversion to his teams efforts. Although it was a rough day for the JV squad, these hard working future Tecumseh Arrows played hard and left it all on the field that day.Final JV score South Vienna 41 -Wee Arrows 13.  J.V. squad photo courtesy Courtney Mowers

The second game played was between the Varsity squads of both teams. The Wee Arrows were down early, when Wee Arrows team captain Hunter Cantrell went down with a season ending leg injury. The short handed Arrows could not catch up to the Warriors and ended up getting shut out in their home opener.
Final Score: Warriors 40 - Wee Arrows  0.

The third match up was played between the Warriors and Wee Arrows Junior Varsity Squads. The Northwestern Warriors continued their ground assault, aided by two Wee Arrows turnovers before halftime, the Warriors lead could not be overcome.  Final Score:  Warriors  47 - Wee Arrows  6.

WEE ARROWS ON THE ROAD @ NORTHRIDGE

This past Sunday found the Park Layne Wee Arrows visiting the Northridge Bearcats for an afternoon of youth football and cheerleading. The fans were excited and ready to support their Wee Arrows.

Starting off was the Park Layne Apache team, consisting of 1st, 2nd  and 3rd graders, against a very good Northridge pee wee team.  Despite great effort, the Apaches couldn't stop the Bearcats offense who scored on every drive.  After the final whistle was blown, the score was a heartbreaking 50-0.

The second match was closer, but sadly had a similar outcome with the Varsity Wee Arrows falling behind early and being unable to catch up to the Bearcats.   Great plays by Nathan Brogan and Wyatt Ferguson could not make up the difference.   Final score 36-0 Northridge over Park Layne.

In the final match-up, the Northridge JV team scored a quick touchdown 2 minutes into the first quarter, but were shut down for the rest of the game due to a much improved Wee Arrow JV defense.  The defensive line was led by #52 Jon Kain,  who had multiple sacks and tackles.  Hunter Cantrell ran the ball down the field repeatedly. Unfortunately, the Bearcat defense was up to the task and held the Wee Arrows out of the end zone.  Final score Bearcats 8, Wee Arrows 0.

The next game for the Wee Arrows will be a home game on Sunday, Sept. 14th at home facing Rolling Hills.  The Apaches play @ 12:30pm, Varsity @ 2:00pm and JV @  3:30pm (time approximate following the Varsity game).

Master Sargent Williams served in the Army National Guard for 30 years serving in 3 overseas tours that took him to Iraq, Kuwait and Panama. In addition to his military service, Kevin enjoyed working with the youth of the community.  Kevin was a coach and a board member of the Wee Arrows from 1990-2004.  During those years, his two sons played football and his daughter cheered for the organization.

In 2011, Kevin was diagnosed with lung cancer.  After a hard fought battle, Kevin passed away in August of that same year.  Even though he is gone, his legacy on the football field will be carried on by the Wee Arrows.

Wee Arrows Open Season Against Shawnee

It was a blistering hot opener for the Park Layne Wee Arrows on Sunday, Aug. 24th.   In the opening  game, the visiting Shawnee Braves jumped out to a quick, 19 point lead over the Park Layne Apache team.  The Apaches found a way to slow the Braves down through the hard work of Hunter Adkins.   Adkins had over 80 yards in 16 carries and scored the only points for the Wee Arrows on opening day.  Final score:  Shawnee 26, Wee Arrows 6.

The final two games did not get any better for the Wee Arrows.  The Varsity teams went to battle after the Tecumseh Air Force ROTC presented the colors of the USA and the state of Ohio.   Shawnee's large Varsity team quickly outgunned the Wee Arrows Varsity team and held the lead throughout the entire game.  Final score:  Shawnee 41, Wee Arrows 0.

The Wee Arrows Junior Varsity team had more productivity than the Varsity, but the end result was the same despite Hunter Cantrell's 75 yards on 12 carries.   Final Score: Shawnee 35, Wee Arrows 0.

The Wee Arrows are now preparing for their next faceoff against the Enon Knights on Sunday, Aug. 31st at home.  For more information, please see the Wee Arrows website: http://www.leaguelineup.com/tecumsehweearrows or follow our facebook page: Park Layne Wee Arrows!

Future Arrow Bowl Played by Cubs and Wee Arrows

On Saturday, Oct. 6th, the LMRVL rivals New Carlisle Cubs and Park Layne Wee Arrows faced off in the first ever "Future Arrow Bowl."  It was held under the lights in Spitzer Stadium at Tecumseh High School.  The games were a special event designed by the New Carlisle Cubs to give the football players, cheerleaders, coaches and parents the "Big Game" experience.  It was the first time the teams have gotten to play under these circumstances.
Middle school coaches met with 6th graders after the Varsity game to discuss playing next year for TMS.
The Apache squad started off the day playing against the Pee Wee Cubs.  One touchdown was scored by the Apache squad. Playing hard, the Apache defense could not keep up against
the Cubs.  The final score of the game was Cubs 27- Wee Arrows 6.
The Junior Varsity squads faced off in the next game.  The one-two punch of Easton Lewis and Alec Hall's touchdowns, capped off by Zeth LeMaster's 2 point conversion, were too much for the Cubs defense.  Not to be outdone by the Arrow offense, the Arrow defense managed to shut the Cubs down.  Final Score:  Wee Arrows 33 - Cubs 0.
The Varsity game was played later in the evening so that the future THS Arrow players would be able to play under the lights.  The Wee Arrows Varsity Head Coach, Josh Sowders, with his assistants Travis Rowe and Russ Wooley, spent all week prepping their squad to come out and dominate the game.  The players did not let their coaches down.  Multiple Arrows scored touchdowns.  Regular Wee Arrow machines Davey Berner and Jordan Crane were joined by Drew Sarihan (who also kicked a field goal), Travis LeMaster, and Brandon Henn.  The Wee Arrow defense totally controlled their side of the ball led by Gavin Wasson's "Pick 6" interception.  Final Score: Wee Arrows: 55 - Cubs 0.
The Park Layne Wee Arrows would like to thank the New Carlisle Cubs for creating and organizing the "Future Arrow Bowl." The Wee Arrows look forward to continuing the tradition between the two teams by hosting "Future Arrow Bowl II" next year!

Wee Arrows JV Achieve Perfection

On the chilly, Sunday afternoon of Oct. 23rd, Head Coach Josh Sowders and his staff of assistant coaches brought their team of young men, the Park Layne Wee Arrows JV squad, to face the Enon Knights in the LMRVL's last game of the 2011 season. After watching the Wee Arrows Apache squad lose in a heart breaking 7-6 contest followed by the Wee Arrows Varsity coming from behind to end their game with the Knights in a 22-22 tie, the Wee Arrows JV squad knew the Knights were aiming to end their unbeaten record.

Unfortunately for the Knights, the Wee Arrows executed Coach Sowders' game plan very effectively. Quarterback Will Sowders took his team down the field early and often in the first half leading the Arrows with his 2 rushing and 2 passing touchdowns. At the halfway point in the game, the Arrows led the Knights 27-7. The second half of the game belonged to Gavin Watson who caught a 70 yard touchdown from Sowders, then scored on 2 long runs to completely seal the game. Final score: Wee Arrows 45 - Knights 0.

This is the second consecutive year that the Park Layne Wee Arrows have had an undefeated squad. In 2010, the Wee Arrows Varsity won the League Championship with a record of 7-0. Next up for the Wee Arrows is the LMVRL Tournament. The Wee Arrows will host the Rolling Hills Bears on Sunday, Oct. 30th in the first round of the tournament. Wee Arrows Remember 9/11

On the 10th anniversary of the September 11th attacks, the Park Layne Wee Arrows held a memorial ceremony during halftime of their Varsity football game. Head Football Coach, Michael Leach, led the ceremony with a moving speech about the 9/11 attacks. A moment of silence was held to remember and honor the victims of 9/11. A member from the Tecumseh High School ROTC program came and presented the flag of the United States. A small group from the THS marching band were also present and played "Taps" during the flag presentation.

The Wee Arrows also wanted to take time to honor the local first responders for our community. Seven members of the Bethel Township Fire Department were on hand for the ceremony. Our local deputy sheriff was also present, but had to leave to respond to a call. The crowd gave a strong round of applause for all of these important community members.

Mr. Leach then turned the microphone over to Reverand John McFarland for an inspirational speech and prayer. He also concluded with a quote from President Ronald Reagan, "The future does not belong to the faint-hearted, it belongs to the brave." The members of the THS marching band then outstandingly played the National Anthem. The Park Layne Wee Arrows would like to thank everyone in attendance and everyone who took the time to help make this ceremony possible.

Wee Arrows Parade: Kick-Off to 2011 Season

The Park Layne Wee Arrows marched in the community parade leading to the successful Party in the Park on Saturday, 8/20. The Varsity, JV and Apache football and cheer teams all proudly participated in the parade that also included Sheriff Gene Kelly, classic hot rod cars and the MeadowView Growers Bloomin' Bus! On a more somber note, the Grand Marshall car was dedicated to Deputy Suzanne Hopper, Bethel Township firefighter Michael Burdo and our own Wee Arrows coach, Kevin Williams (also a member of the National Guard). It displayed pictures of all three community members that will be greatly missed.

The Wee Arrows co-hosted the Party in the Park event with the Park Layne Community Group. Water was flying as Wee Arrows coaches were dunked time after time as they sat in the dunk tank. Football players and cheerleaders were eager to take their shot at dunking their coaches. The Bake Sale table was also a major success for raising money for cheer costumes for the upcoming LMRVL Cheer Competition.
