Our Dedicated 2018-19 Coaching Staff

RICHARD ENDRES – VARSITY HEAD COACH

Coach Endres is now entering his 21st season as head coach of the Lancer Basketball Program. The Ventura County Hall of fame coach’s teams have won nine Marmonte League Championships and have won over twenty games per season in the last eleven out of twelve years. Coach has been selected Marmonte League Coach of the Year six times. The Lancers Coach has been honored by being selected Ventura County Coach of the Year three times and Division 2AA CIF Coach of the Year. The Lancers went to the CIF Finals three times, winning in 2009.

 

At coach’s side is his lovely wife Michele of 35 years and two wonderful children: his daughter Brittany, a graduate of CSUN and son Eric who has earned his Master’s degree in Architecture and is married to his wife Zasha with six year old granddaughter Sofia and four year old Emely.

STEVE ORNELAZ – VARSITY ASSISTANT COACH

Coach Ornelaz graduated from TOHS in 1977 and set the bar high in the Lancer program, as he broke 10 individual varsity records his senior year.  His scoring average of 24.7 points per game ranks #2 in TO history & his rebounding records that he set 40 years ago still remain today!  He was the first Lancer to earn Marmonte League Player Of The Year, Ventura County Player Of The Year and All CIF in the same season.  He went on to excel at both Moorpark College and West Texas State University. Upon completing his college career, he competed at the professional level for several years in Mexico.  Coach Ornelaz has also been inducted into 2 Halls Of Fame: in 2006 for his professional playing days in Mexico and in the Ventura County Sports Hall Of Fame, Class Of 2017.

 

Today, he trains and works with the young and upcoming basketball talent in Ventura County.  Many of them are current and future Lancers!  He assists them in developing their athletic talent, helping them to take their game to a higher level.

JEFF FRANCIS – VARSITY ASSISTANT COACH
Coach Francis is in his sixth year with the Lancers. He was born and raised in New Jersey, where he played basketball for Atlantic County Community College for 2 years. He moved to Thousand Oaks in 1987. He was on the staff at Westlake High School from 1995 until 2002 where he served  as the Soph-Frosh coach for 2 years and then became an assistant coach to the varsity for the remaining years.

 

He has been active for over 25 years in baseball and basketball in the Conejo Valley. He has two sons Derrick and Dylan.

 

 

JAY WERNER – VARSITY ASSISTANT COACH
“Play Hard, Smart, and Together” is what Coach Jay Werner adheres to. Coach Werner has always been into athletics. He played football, golf, and track & field at Agoura High School where he graduated in 1977. He then attended Pierce College, where he played two years of football. He has always been a basketball junkie and upon attending San Diego State, he would often stay up until 2am watching and studying the game on the new sports network, ESPN.

 

Coach Werner started his coaching career at Polytechnic High School, coaching the boys’ varsity basketball team for ten years and winning a L.A. City Divisional  Championship in 1999. He then moved onto Los Angeles Valley College and coached the men’s basketball team for 5 years as an assistant and head coach. He was part of teams that won 3 conference titles and had one state final four appearance in 2000. He has also done stints with Los Angeles Valley and Glendale College women’s teams. This will be Coach Werner’s fifth year at Thousand Oaks High.

 

Coach Werner is grateful for his family, wife Linda, and his kids AJ, Sally and Samantha.
