The Weirton 8's, Pinto division All-Stars, continued to shine, as the were crowned champions of the WBA 5th Annual Open Pinto Tournament.  This championship is the 2nd in 2007 for the Weirton 8's having won the Wintersville tournament a week ago.

This tournament endined similar to the last with Weirton facing Wintersville Blue in the championship game.  Only difference was this time Winterville Blue was coming from the losers bracket.  Weirton defeated Wintersville in game 1 to become 2007 Champions. Historians indicate that they represent the first Weirton team to win a tournament hosted by the WBA since this tournaments inception.
Next weekend, the 8's are off to Warren Township for the 3rd tournament this season.  Good Luck boys!

WBA represented well in OVYBL Tournament

On Saturday, July 2, 2006 the OVYBL (Ohio Valley Youth Baseball League) championship games for both Bronco and Mustang divisions were held at the Weirton Baseball Association complex grounds, with both division tournaments coming down to two Weirton teams in the finals.

The opening game was the Bronco Division championship. It was the Weirton Pirates vs. the Weirton White Sox. In a very well played game by both teams, the Weirton Pirates came out on top with a thrilling victory following a walk off home run hit by Eric Hutchinson in the bottom of seventh inning. The Weirton Pirates are managed by Joe Tunno. Players include   James Harvey, Cory Poling, Zachary Reeves, Zachary Robinson, Michael Rogers, Zachary Springer, Dakota Swan, Matthew  Thompson, Mitchell Viakley and Levi Wright.

Weirton Advances to 2005 Regionals

Weirton's 12U team took the Bronco League sectional title July 16 in Monessen, defeating teams from Morgantown, Mon Valley and McCandless (North Allegheny) on their way to the crown.

The win advances the Weirton team to regional play July 21-23 in Canonsburg, where they will compete against teams from Bucks County, Waynesburg, Canonsburg and Chambersburg for the right to represent the area at the PONY World Series, Bronco division, semi-finals in Greensboro, NC.

Weirton defeated Morgantown, 8-4, in the opening match-up and downed Mon Valley 11-4 in the second round before losing to McCandless, 6-5, in eight innings in the semi-finals. Weirton rebounded in the championship, however, coming back from a two-run deficit to defeat McCandless and claim sectional honors by an 8-5 score.

Logan Linder was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament with a stellar performance at the plate and on the mound. Along with a pair of home runs – one in each game of the doubleheader with McCandless – Logan also contributed two doubles, four singles and two walks and was the winning pitcher in the championship game.

Also earning tournament wins were Weirton's Clay Rokisky, who anchored the 8-4 victory over Morgantown, and Dylan Bongiorni, who kept Mon Valley off balance on the way to an 11-4 victory in the second day of tournament play.

Weirton's Broncos also recorded a number of outstanding plays in the field, including a diving catch in left field by Connor Mogan and a diving catch by Dylan Bongiorni in foul territory in front of his own bench. Shortstop Nick Battista came up big in the field as well, turning double plays in critical situations throughout the weekend.

Also contributing to the winning effort with clutch hitting and outstanding defense were Dustin Cuprik, Michael Drizake, Evan Harris, Eric Hutchinson, Seth Klar, Daniel Pietranton and Marcus Prather.

The Bronco squad is coached by Joe Tunno, Anthony Pietranton, John Bongiorni, Mike Battista and Don Mogan.
