Worthington Kilbourne Girls Soccer

Team Rules

Team placement & tryouts

Players will be evaluated and placed on teams with input from all coaching staff. During tryouts, players will be assessed in 10 areas: shooting, passing, receiving, heading, fitness, tactics, offensive awareness, defensive awareness, and overall coach-ability. In addition to these areas, the player’s position (forward, midfield, defender, keeper) and overall attitude will certainly weigh into the final team placement. The player’s grade in school has very little to do with team placement. We will not discuss team placement decisions with parents.

Once teams are announced, players may still be asked to support other teams. JVA players may be asked to dress JVB games, and JVA players may be asked to dress for Varsity games. Players who are given this opportunity should realize that it is not a permanent placement and does not guarantee future chances of a spot on Varsity the next season.

At the JV level, playing time will be equitable. This is NOT the case at the Varsity level. Coaching staff at both the JV and Varsity levels will NOT discuss playing time with parents until the player has approached and discussed how they can become a better player for the overall team. This discussion will be focused on what the player can do to improve her game and will not focus on other teammates playing time. If your daughter has had this discussion with the coach, please reach out to the team coach (JV player should contact the JV coach etc). Understand that at no time will any coach on staff discuss another team member’s playing time with you. Please as parents know that we as a coaching staff are stressing the importance of sacrificing for you team and thinking in a team-first, not player-first mindset.

Putting team before self

Everyone must work towards the good of the team. It is the expectation of everyone in the program that each player has a positive attitude and comes to each practice and game willing to work hard and improve. You have complete control over your physical preparation and we expect you to take responsibility for it. We will at each level have an eagerness to sacrifice personal interests or glory for the welfare of all. We will give our best at all times, no matter the circumstances. Poor attitude, lack of respect, and selfishness will NOT be tolerated. As a coaching staff we reserve the right to suspend anyone who puts herself before the good of the team.

You are incredibly fortunate to have the many luxuries we have in Worthington. We have been blessed with nice uniforms, equipment, and fields. You must respect all of the equipment you are given so that others may have that same opportunity.  Take care of your uniform and make an effort to return it nicer than it was given to you.

Your teammates and coaches expect you to be a positive role model. Follow all school and athletic department rules. Detentions, suspensions, or violations of the Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drugs will NOT be tolerated or ignored. I have very high expectations of you and so do your parents, teammates, and your community. Do not let us down.

Sportsmanship

We have a reputation. Therefore, you are expected to represent your family, your school, and your team in a first class manner at all times. We will treat our officials, our opponents, and more importantly each other with the utmost respect. If you display poor sportsmanship during a match in any fashion, the coaching staff reserves the right to lesson your playing time in following matches and/or implement another disciplinary action as a result of your choices. Poor sportsmanship will not be tolerated at any time.

Parents actions are equally important in representing our school community. When at a match, please try to keep your comments as constructive and positive as possible. Please leave the coaching and communicating to the officials to the coaching staff. It is our mutual goal to represent Kilbourne in the best way possible.

Attendance:

Once the season begins (first day of tryouts), all practices and games are mandatory. If a player is going to miss a scheduled event, she must notify her coach as soon as possible and provide a written note or email to that coach. Please understand that this is verifying the absence, not excusing it. Vacations, work schedules, driver’s education classes, college visits, etc. should be taken care of prior to the season beginning or after it ends.

If a player misses a practice for an avoidable reason prior to a game, the coach reserves the right to prohibit that player from participating in the match.  Occasionally, inescapable situations arise that cause a player to miss practice (ie family emergency) and in those cases, the coach may allow the player to play in the game, but the player will not be permitted to start.

Attendance at team functions is essential to the success of the program. This goes beyond practices and games. Team outings, pre-game meals, service opportunities, etc, are needed to build strong relationships among players on a team and between players and coaching staff.  It is our expectation that you make a significant effort to attend all of these opportunities.

Varsity lettering

In our soccer program, a regular season Varsity schedule includes sixteen matched, each consisting of two halves. In order for a player to earn a Varsity letter, the player must play in a minimum of sixteen halves during the course of the season. There are exceptions that can be made at the discretion of the coaching staff:

1.     In the case where a player identified as a back-up keeper has worked diligently and patiently behind a highly skilled starting keeper, the coaches may award the letter despite the fact that the player may not have met the minimum halves player requirement.

2.     In the case where a player has made significant contributions to the team but has not met the minimum halves played requirement perhaps due to injury or other circumstance, the coaches may award the letter.

Injuries

Prior to august, any injuries sustained should receive proper medical attention and should be communicated to the coaching staff by the parent. Please send an email to the coach and bring the medical excuse to a practice so that copies can be made and retained by staff and passed on to our athletic trainers. If the player is prohibited from activity, they will not be allowed to participate until a note from a medical professional clears them.

Once August arrives, the training room staff will be available to examine and treat athletes. If a player sustains an injury during tryouts or throughout the season, the coaching staff will insist they see our athletic trainer. Again, if parents take their player to a primary care physician, we will still need to know and will still require a follow-up with out training staff for post-injury rehab.
