Discipleship in Practice

 Values

"A boy does not just become a man, he is taught how to be one, and the tests that follow the teaching are not written."

To instill Christian values in our young men and equip them with tools to use on and off the field, we will use a set of 12 Christian values and morals for weekly discussion.

These Christian moral messages will be interjected at the beginning of and throughout practices/games. We will use moments when the players are putting equipment on, during drills, before competition etc. Christian moral message repetition is important. Examples from football, school, family and friends will be emphasized.

We will discuss a different topic each week for 12 weeks. Below are the Christian morals, mated with bible versus and quotes from famous people, to help us push the importance of being a good man who is part of something bigger than himself for the Glory of God.

 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Week 1: Learning - "I will determine to have a teachable spirit."

Proverbs 8:10  -- Take my instruction and not silver, and knowledge rather than choicest gold.

“I find four great classes of students: The dumb who stay dumb. The dumb who become wise. The wise who go dumb. The wise who remain wise." Dr. Martin H. Fischer.

“If we work upon marble, it will perish. If we work upon brass, time will efface it. If we rear temples, they will crumble to dust. But, if we work upon men’s immortal minds, if we imbue them with high principles, with the just awe of God, with the love of their fellowmen, we engrave on those tablets something which no time can efface and which will brighten and brighten to eternity.” Daniel Webster.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Week 2: Courage - "I will do what is needed in spite of my fear."

Deut. 31:6: -- Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Week 3: Responsibility - "Amid the adversity, I will show up, mount-up, train hard, and never quit."

I Cor. 7:24  -- Brothers, each man, as responsible to God, should remain in the situation God has called  him to.

“The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it but that it is too low and we reach it.” Michelangelo.

“The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery every day. Never lose a holy curiosity.” Albert Einstein.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Week 5: Sportsmanship - "I will be gracious in victory and hold my head high in defeat."

Gal. 6:14 -- May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Week 7: Reverence - "I will hold God in highest esteem."

Eccl. 12:13 -- ...fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.

“Duty, honor, country: Those three hallowed words reverently dictate what you ought to be, what you can be, what you will be.” General Douglas Mac Arthur.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Week 11: Integrity - "I will do the right thing even when no one is looking."

Prov. 10:9 -- A man of integrity walks without fear, but he who takes crooked paths will be found out.
