IS THIS THE FUTURE OF THE TD CLUB?

October 12, 2010
All,
First, I want to say this is an open discussion and I would like to hear comments on the message board.

At the beginning of the year I was approached by Curt Erpenbach, his son is playing for the Digs.  Curt has been a leader/founder of the MSU Great Falls Tailgate Club, where they do an amazing job of not only throwing a great tailgate, but also for raising money for the Bobcat football program.  He approached us because he would like to see our club grow to something similar.

During the last TD Club meeting, Curt gave a small presentation on what his thoughts were.

Before I get into that, I think it would be prudent to discuss where our origins came from and what we have already done throughout the years.

The TD Club was originally started in 1997 by a few former players mainly Greg Barnes, Matt Vincent, and Josh Vincent.  Tailgating @ Montana Tech was non existant and the beginnings of this group was a meeting at the Vu Villa.
In 1998, I came aboard and we started to tailgate.  At the time we were the only "real" tailgate here.  We cooked for everyone and we provided drinks for everyone.  The money we raised from donations, is the same money we used to throw the next tailgate.  We hosted large crowds, we put up God-awful tarps on poles we found laying on the ground, we were sketchy at best... but we did throw a good tailgate.  I can still taste the lighter fluid on the burgers.  We had a crew of a core 6-8 guys who showed up everygame and cooked their butts off.
When Joe came to be the AD and moved the tailgate to the tiers, we were more than happy to give up the charcoal grills, although we still cook from time to time.  We have gone through about 10 pop up tents trying to improve our situation, but the wind decided it was time to never hoist a tent again.
Don't get me wrong, we cook for about 1000 or more people every year at the spring game, and we typically do one big tailgate where we cook for everyone like the old days.  We enjoy doing it, but the coorinating is rigorous, and the lighter fluid still tastes bad.  For better or worse, we are where we are now, because its what we decided to do.

Curt has brought a game changer to the table.  For $20,000 he has proposed to build a trailer much like the one they use for the Bobcat games.
Recently Curt invited me to attend their tailgate in Bozeman to see 1st hand what he was talking about.. and i gotta say.. WOW.
UPFRONT, I have to say, something like this is going to have to take participation from more than the 2 or 3 that show up tend our current small time tailgate.  We will need 6-8 people each week dedicated, if we want to pull this off.

The trailer houses the kegs, with the taps fitted to the front

they serve food out of the front of the trailer

here is the food they serve....

..
back to the sponsors.  We would need 20 sponsors @ $1000 per.  The sponsors get their name on the trailer.  But the real prize in being a sponsor is that you can use the trailer whenever you want (except during football season)!  Kids graduation party, town parade, company golf tourney, whatever... just clean it before you return it, or we will charge you $200 to do it for you.  Curt, says that this is the true seller.  They have a long line of people waiting to become a sponsor.  We would need to work out the details on this, but there is no need to re-invent the wheel.

Another money making idea that has been very successful for the Great Falls Bobcat club is that they sell mugs for $20.  the mugs are numbered 1 - 150.  Each week, the club puts out a plastic bin, and at the end of the tailgate, the people who have purchased the mugs, put their mug in the bin.  The club takes them home and washes them and has them waiting for the 150 people who regularly come back looking for their mug each week.

At the end of the year, the buyer can take the mug home with them, they'll need to buy a new one next year.

This trailer is fitted with 2 large flat screen tv's.  they weren't on when i was there, but they do have a satellite hookup for them, donated by the local satellite company.  you can see 1 of the tv's hanging here in the back, the other is poking out the back end of the trailer.

The last detail is that they have the trailer decorated with MSU bobcat logos to let everyone know where they are from.  i can picture something similar to this, but with charlie oredigger busting through the decal!

So anyway, just some thoughts on this.  I'm 100% game if and only if, we can get support.  There is no point in doing something like this if we can't get the manpower to use it properly.  There were probably 300 people at the tailgate at its peak, and many people came and went.  the #1 difference maker, was they had about 10 donation buckets out and it seemed like everyone of them was manned with someone saying drop something in there.  I really liked how the manned the beer, you felt you weren't getting a beer unless you donated.  you got a bracelet to show you were 21, but it also showed you had already donated and then you didn't feel the pressure of dropping in a few bucks.

money raised, will go towards maintenance and insurance, but believe me, there is plenty leftover to go towards are normal operating expenses (meetings and tailgates) as well as some leftover to actually give to the football team.  Something i know everyone would like to see happen.

Let me hear your comments on the message board and if its something you think we should pursue.

DIGGERVISION GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY

Newmont Mining Donates to Montana Tech Scoreboard Project

Butte, MT – On December 9, 2009, Newmont Mining Corporation, one of the world’s leading gold companies, provided Montana Tech with a gift in the amount of $250,000. The gift will be funded over a three year period. The donation will provide the resources necessary to install Montana Tech’s new electronic scoreboard. Pending approval of the Board of Regents, the scoreboard will be named the “Newmont Mining Scoreboard” for the next ten years. The Newmont Mining Scoreboard will be installed in Alumni Coliseum prior to the 2010 football season.

“Newmont Mining’s support of Montana Tech and our student-athletes is unprecedented,” exclaimed an elated Joe McClafferty, Montana Tech Athletic Director. “Digger Athletics has never received a gift of this size before. I cannot wipe the smile off my face.  Digger Vision will create a revenue stream for athletics and a First Choice venue for our outstanding fans.”

“Newmont has a long history of supporting Montana Tech, and we are proud to invest in the school and its students over the decades in so many different ways,” acknowledged Marc LeVier, Director of Metallurgical Services for Newmont Mining Corporation. “We are pleased to be able to make Montana Tech a great campus through all aspects of the educational experience,” said Brooke Bacon, Newmont’s University Strategy Manager.

“This project has been a significant element within the athletic department’s vision for quite some time. Newmont’s gift will make Digger Vision a reality for our current and future students,” stated Mike Johnson, Vice Chancellor of Development and Student Services and President of the Montana Tech Foundation.

“When Joe called me with the news that Newmont had made an extremely generous donation to our Scoreboard Project, I was on the road between Baker and Ekalaka, Montana. The temperature was 18 below zero with blowing snow on the road. It immediately turned from frigid conditions to absolute bikini weather,” shouted Head Football Coach Bob Green. “Thank you very much Newmont Mining! This will add much to our game day atmosphere and assist greatly in funding the future of Oredigger Football!”

Credit cards can also be phoned in to 800-984-4683. If someone wanted to make a cash donation, we can handle that if they came to our office on Granite Street. Of course, donors are welcome to drop off checks or bring their credit card to the office as well.

If someone wanted to do a monthly or quarterly charge, or some other out of the ordinary arrangement, they can call me at 406-496-4233 and I’ll do my best to accommodate them.

We’ll issue a receipt back to the donor for tax purposes. It would be a good idea to stress the importance of corporate matches as well. Many companies will match gifts to higher education. Usually, a company’s HR department can help the employee out with the specifics if that company has a program.

Thanks,

March 14, 2007

Greetings Fellow Orediggers & Fans!

We write this letter to inform you about a new organization, M Club Alumni (MCA)! The MCA will consist primarily of former football players and supporters, with a primary goal of supporting Montana Tech Football. We are very excited to invite you to be a member of the MCA and to help Montana Tech Football become a National Championship Contender in the NAIA.

Despite success in the past twenty years we feel very strongly that the MCA can make a positive impact on Digger Football and take it to the next level. For many, Digger Football has given us a great deal and it is our turn to pay it back. Our primary mission is to raise funds in order to complete projects that provide an annual income directly to Oredigger Football. We are working in conjunction with the Montana Tech Foundation, who will hold all funds raised, yet the MCA will be able to determine what funds are used on what projects. With this model YOU will be able to see your impact on Digger Football!

Recently Montana Tech hired a second full time assistant coach, which makes Tech tied for last in the conference with two full time assistants. Despite operating with limited staff and resources, Montana Tech has a great deal to be proud of:
• In 20 seasons, the Orediggers have finished 1st, tied for 1st, or 2nd 14 times.
• The Orediggers have been in the post season 5 times (1992, 1996, 1997, 2004 and 2005) advanced to the National Championship in 1996, beat Azusa Pacific in Los Angeles in 2005 (A.P.U.’s 2nd home loss in 5 years).
• Record 116 wins – 94 losses – 1 tie
• 6 Frontier Conference Championships or co-championships, 8 second place finishes.
• Post Season Record (4 wins and 5 losses).

Many of you are already aware that the Frontier Conference has become the premier conference in NAIA Football. Carroll College had advanced to the post season and won National Championships 4 years in a row (2002 – 2005). In 2006 three Frontier teams were ranked in the top 25, Montana Tech being one of those teams. Other conference schools have made significant financial investments in support of their programs. Montana Tech football needs our help to continue this standard of success!

Our first project is to raise $75,000 to install contour seats in Alumni Coliseum. By doing this, Montana Tech will be able to sell 500 + seats as reserved Season Tickets thus raising approximately $55,000 annually from the sale of these seats. With this annual income, the football program plans to add a 3rd full time assistant coach. This is where you can make a significant difference at Montana Tech! With your help the project will be completed in time for the 2007 Digger campaign. Coach Green is the first donor and has already given $1000 to this project we invite you to join him and give your $1000!

Your donation is 100% tax deductible! The Montana Tech Foundation will keep track of all funds donated and send a statement directly to you at the beginning of 2008. Please find the attached informational brochure which contains the sponsorship information.

All donations are welcome, but we do have 2 special sponsorship levels:
MCA Gold Sponsor - $1000 +
*All Gold Sponsors will receive a personalized commerative plaque upon completion of this project.
MCA Silver Sponsor - $500 - $999
*All Gold and Silver Sponsors will have their name engraved on a plaque in Alumni Coliseum.
