BASEBALL PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The page provides descriptions of each age group in the Urbana recreational programs. Urbana fields teams from ages 4-18 with about 80% of these players playing rec ball. Urbana also fields competitive travel baseball teams. For questions about that program contact jbcollins10@gmail.com.

The descriptions provided are general and will be adjusted based on several factors including the number of teams at each age group, weather conditions and skills of the participants involved.  Teams typically practice or play games 2 times per week.

6U - Co-ed Tee-Ball
Tee-ball introduces young players to the basics of baseball. Basic hitting, fielding, throwing, catching and running skills are emphasized.   At this age group we allow 4 - 6 year olds to learn the game of baseball in a fun, non-competitive environment. Games are 2 innings in length. Outs and runs are not recorded and each team bats their entire lineup in each inning. At this age level, a coach will sit on a bucket 20 feet from home plate and give the player a chance to hit a pitched ball. If the player is not able to hit the ball after 6 pitches then we put the ball on a tee for the player to hit. A softer compression ball is used at this age level for the player's safety. Games are played on 50 foot bases.

8U Ripken Rookie
The Rookie League is a machine pitch league for 7, 8, and some 9-year old players.  The primary goal of Rookie League baseball is to provide individualized instruction to our players, emphasizing the fundamentals of the game (hitting, throwing, catching, and running).  Additionally, this league represents the first level in the organization where the children are introduced to competitive baseball although scores are not kept. Games are played on 60 foot bases.

10U Ripken Minors

Minors baseball will transition kids from the pitching machine to live kid pitch.  Players will expand from baseball basics to a more competitive and skilled league that will emphasize proper hitting techniques, base running, pitching and lead runner fielding situations.  The league is designed for 9 and 10 year old players, however 11 year olds who are just learning the game or not as advanced will also be considered. Scores & standings are kept and an end of season playoff tournament is completed. Games are played on 60 foot bases.

12U Ripken Majors
This is the first baseball age group where most official baseball rules apply (leading off, stealing, etc...). Scores & standings are kept and an end of season playoff tournament is completed.Games are played on 70 foot bases.

14U Babe Ruth (open to ages 13 and 14)

14U is for players who are 13 or 14 years old on April 30th. The move up to the full size diamond moves the bases to 90 feet, the pitching mound is 60ft,6 inches from home plate and most home run fences to 300+. All regular baseball rules apply.

Teams will participate in the Frederick County Babe Ruth League. Scores & standings are kept and an end of season playoff tournament is completed.

Based on the number of players we have we will either form a 13U team or have 13 year old players participate in the broader 15U age group.  We might refer players to another local team if the 15U team is full.

15U Babe Ruth (open to ages 13-15)

Continued development for players 13-15. Played on 90 foot bases 300+ home run fences. All regular baseball rules apply. Players may wear metal spikes as well as use certain big barrel baseball bats.

The season starts a little later to allow players to finish their high school seasons.Teams will participate in the Frederick County Babe Ruth League. Scores & standings are kept and an end of season playoff tournament is completed.
