How big do you play when the game makes you feel small?

 

The Aubree Munro you all know is most likely the one pictured on the right. Nobody wants to remember the one on the left...but I do. After every AMAZING moment, I reflect and remember the girl on the left because that is the girl who got her to the picture on the right. That day, the picture on the left, that was a sad day. She and her team got beat up pretty good by a team full of future AllAmericans, a future National Champion, and many, many future collegiate players. Not a whole lot went her way that day...but she didn't quit. She kept fighting down to the very last out of a VERY short game. At that moment, she...WE had no idea where this journey would take her. All we knew was that it had been a pretty rotten day. The reason I'm posting this is because several of my students as well as my two young daughters had a rough softball weekend. I saw that face on the left A LOT this weekend. And I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but, it wasn't the last time I saw that look on Aubree's face...and it won't be the last for you either. The game of softball, the game we love so much, is full of ups and downs, but it's WHAT YOU DO AFTER the picture on the left that gets you to the picture on the right! It's how you respond to adversity that makes you the athlete and the PERSON that you become! No one likes the moment on the left, as a parent it is heartbreaking to see your child in that place, BUT if you can use that moment as a catalyst to get better; a springboard to the future YOU who will some day celebrate with her teammates some pretty exciting moments, then and only then do the moments on the left become worth it. So hold your head up high and keep working hard and smart, knowing that you are on your way to some pretty amazing moments and a VERY amazing YOU!
