KEN McLEAN

Ken McLean is the owner and designer of DRILLZ Athletics. He has more than 35 years experience in coaching baseball, having started coaching at the age of sixteen.

By the age of 21, in 1988, Ken was coaching every youth all-star team in his home community of Stephenville, Newfoundland, from Mosquito(10-11 years) through Midget(16-18 years), while simultaneously acting as player-coach on both a local junior and senior baseball team. As a player and coach in his local senior league, he also co-founded two teams, including the Stephenville Mets, a name which was adopted by the local minor baseball organization in Stephenville and still exists today.

After leaving Stephenville in 1990, Ken’s first full - time job came via St. John’s Minor Baseball, where he was employed as the Organization’s first Executive Director. Ken moved on from the Organization in 2000 to pursue a teaching career. He continued his active involvement as a player, winning his third St. John’s Senior League Baseball Championship in 2002 as a player-coach with the Guards, following two prior senior championships in the early 1990’s with the Feildians.

Ken is one of the few remaining level three fully-certified coaches in the old NCCP remaining in the Province. He became a Learning Facilitator in the new NCCP and has nationally certified well in excess of 250 coaches in his coaching career. Ken is also a former recipient of the Les Noseworthy Award for his commitment to the growth and development of baseball in Newfoundland, has coached Nationally with the first two Selects teams, has served as the Coaching Chairperson of the NABA, and most recently trained Mosquito and Pee Wee all-star teams with St. John’s Minor Baseball, via a program which he designed and  delivered as the program’s lead instructor – DRILLZ.

Ken’s expertise lies in teaching technical skills and preparing players to apply these skills in game situations. Answering the questions “How do I do it?”  “What do I do when...?” and “What do I do if….?” are the keys which makes Ken’s approach so effective. The goal is to develop an athlete who not only possesses technical skills, but one who has the knowledge base to apply these skills in game situations.

DRILLZ Athletics is the start of a new phase in Ken’s coaching career. His goal is to offer high quality coaching instruction for coaches and children with opportunities for expansion into other sports in future.

Welcome to DRILLZ Athletics!
