Brunswick Railroader Baseball History

The Brunswick Railroader Baseball program has been one of the most successful High School programs in the state of Maryland for the past 35 years. Since 1989 the Railroaders have won 6 State Titles, 12 Regional Titles,4 Frederick County Titles, and 5 M.V.A.L. Titles. In that time the Railroader program has produced 72 scholarship players, and has many team and individual records in the Maryland State book. Also in that time frame the program has produced 11 All State players in Jason Kasch 1990, Joe Lucas 1991, Scott Frye 1992,Steve Goode 1997, Adam Eshbaugh 1998, Andy Maught 2000, Alan Webber 2001, Kevin Goode 2001, Brian Baugher 2003,  Andrew Wanger 2015, and Oliver Ellison 2022,and 2023.Brunswick plays in the tough CMC Conference, and is a member of the 1A West Region.

Railroaders Are 1A West Region 2 Champions.

The Railroaders competing in likely the toughest Region in the state the 1A West region 2, battled through two tough contest to take the championship for 2024. The region has produced 6 of the last 9 state champions. Brunswick faced a scrappy Catoctin squad in their first round matchup the regiona quarter final because they received a bye because they were the number 1 seed. Catoctin blated Boonsboro in the first round on a ten run rule voctory. It was certainly a dog fight as Catoctin grabbed the earlt lead and expanded it in the 5th inning by a score of 3-1. Catoctin ace Garrett Worth was on his game as the Railroaders left the bases loaded in the 5th and 6th innings, scoring a lone run in the 6th frame to make it 3-2. Nate Borawski relieved Railroader starter Tyler Lowery in the 7th frame and pitched a scoreless inning giving the Railroaders a chance. Lowery threw a great game through six innings and only one of the 3 runs he surrendered was earned. In the deciding 7th frame Connor Mullaney drew a 1 out walk that was followed up by a Nate Borawski walk. Willie Frye was sat down on strikes for the second out. Carson Eye kept things alive as he battled Catoctin reliever Pat Morlan and in a 8 pitch at bat drew a walk. Bases were now loadede for Railroader Senior centerfielder Koltin Boyer. Boyer took the count to one ball one strike and on the third pitch of the at bat he laced a single up the middle that bounced off the second base bag allowing Alex Frye to score from third and Nate Borawski to score the deciding run from second. The huge crowd erupted as Boyer was stormed by his team mates as he collected one of the most dramtaic walk off hits in Railroader history. Head caoch Roger Dawson praised Boyer and the rest of the players that got on for great approches in their at bats. Those guys worked hard to set it up and Boyer came through in great fashion. It's tough to beat a good team like Catoctin 3 times in a season. I knew this was going to be a dog fight.

The Railroaders now had to face the 2 time defending state champion Claer Spring for the regional title. Colin Pearra threw a great game surrendering zero runs through six innings. He scattered 7 Blazer hits and worked out of several jams. Ty Kaunas got the save with a 90 mph fastball sitting down all three hitters he faced in the 7th inning. Connor Mullaney collected the biggest hit of the game in the first inning as he plated two with a line drive single into right. Those two runs were all Pearre and Kaunas would need. The Roaders collected 2 more runs after the Mullaney hit on a throwing error on the short stop. Brunswick collected their 9th regional title and now move on to a Friday contest at Merriman Stadium which will likely be a very good Liberty team. There is an outside chance the Railroaders could play Mardela off the eastern shore. Fridays contest will have a start time of 4:00.

Head Coach Roger Dawson reaches Milestone as he collects his 400th win.

On April 24 the Railroaders traveled to Smithsburg to battle the Leopards in a CMC contest. An important game for regional standings as well as CMC standings. Not only were there big ramifications for the result it was also a very important game for Head Coach Roger Dawson as a win would put him at 400 wins for his career. The game was a dogfight as the two teams battled into extra innings, as the Railroaders won the contest 3-2. Dawson was greeted by his players in rightfield with a large banner displaying his accomplishment. Dawson is now only the fifth coach in MD public school history to reach this milestone. Dawson gave all the credit to the great players he has had over the 32 years he has been Head Coach. He said I knew it was coming but wanted it to be low key beacuse we are having a great year and that needs to be the important focus. So much for that. I'm greatful that the good lord has put me in this posistion. The journey has been unreal. I've truly been blessed.

Railroaders Are CMC Champions.

The Railroaders added another piece of hardware to the trophy case as they were declared Co Champion of the Central Md Conference. The Railroaders battled Clear Spring in the CMC tournament game which resulted in a 5-5 tie after 7 innings complete. With the playoffs starting on Thursday everyone agreed that extra innings would not happen. The Railroaders also sported the best record in CMC play for the regular season as they recorded a 12-2 CMC mark. Big hits in the title game came off the bats of Conner Ohler a two run homerun, Nate Borawski an RBI single, Tyler Lowery a RBI single, Koltin Boyers 3 hits including a triple, and Connor Mullaney's two singles. Railroaders Have Unique Home-Field Advantage

The Brunswick High School Baseball facility, otherwise known as "Merriman Stadium," has long been considered one of the finer baseball stadiums around the area. Located on Cummings Drive, and just a short walk from the high school itself, the home of the Railroaders is equipped with all of the neccessities that any baseball purist could appreciate. The field boasts a brick-dust infield, a substance that holds up in the spring rains year after year. Along with the grass baselines, the BHS field also has fungoe circles on either side of homeplate, giving the park a "major league" feel. Astroturf surfaces can be found in front of the pitching mound dirt, and behind the homeplate circle. These surfaces provide two spots where BHS pitchers and coaches can hurl batting practice without damaging the surrounding dirt/grass field surface. Spacious dugouts are found on both sides of the field, with the hometown Railroaders occupying the 3rd base dugout. Fences align the top step of both dugouts, giving the players a place to lean while focusing on the game. Speaking of fences, the entire fence that surrounds the field is covered on top with plastic piping, an element that has prevented countless injuries over the past several years. A batting cage sits down the right field line, outside of the fence, giving the Railroaders and the opposition ample opportunities to tune up for a game. Bullpen mounds sit down the right and left field lines, with the Railroader bullpen containing an astroturf surface in the catcher's area. The Railroaders also have the advantage of scheduling night games if the situation calls for it as the BHS facility is equipped with lightpoles that surround the field. Fans are not left out either. With a concession stand, bathrooms, press box, and plentiful seating (bleachers down 1st and 3rd, covered bleachers behind home plate, lawn chair area), the Railroader home field gives fans every opportunity to relish their experience at the ball game.
