The Dale “Gopher” Lien Memorial Tournament last weekend was dominated by the Jamestown Miller Lite Merchants.
The Merchants outscored their opponents 50-2 in three games, capped by their 16-0 win over the Jamestown Elks in the championship game on Sunday at Jack Brown Stadium.
Sam Hirchert, Paul Roers and Steve Hirchert each fired complete games as the Merchants improved to 13-4 overall.
The Merchants opened with a 21-hit barrage in a 23-0 beating of Bismarck on Sunday.
Josh Evans was 4-for-4 with seven RBI and a home run. Bryan Erstad was also 4-for-4. It was part of a 7-for-11 tournament for Erstad. The Merchants’ longtime 3-hole hitter also had five RBI and a pair of stolen bases.
Tom Houdek added three hits and two RBI, while Danny Fischer, Jared Purdy, Steve Hirchert, Brandon Baumgartner and John Ness added two hits apiece. Purdy’s two hits drove in four runs.
Sam Hirchert allowed just two hits in five innings and struck out nine on the mound.
In their second game, the Merchants rolled over the Mayville Redcaps 11-2.
Erstad and Houdek each homered in the rout. Preston Jensen and Baumgartner added two hits each.
Roers allowed three hits with six strikeouts in six innings.
In the championship Sunday, all nine Merchants had at least one hit with Jensen and Steve Hirchert each going 3-for-3. Jensen had three RBI. Erstad was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Purdy and Dan White were 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Steve Hirchert surrendered just two hits and a walk with five strikeouts to notch the shutout.
The Merchants outhit their three opponents 48-6 in the three games.
The Elks finished the tournament 1-2. Mayville was 2-1 and Bismarck 0-3.
