Red Caps win late: Pitching leads Merchants
Jamestown North Dakota 121 3rd St NW 58401

The Class AAA semifinals on Sunday were both clean, well-played games with some late heroics on the opener and a strong pitching performance in game 2.

Mickey Berry of the Mayville Red Caps went 8-for-15 in the Class AAA state tournament

Mayville got a walkoff winner from Brandon Kath, while Jamestown Miller Lite Merchants lefty Brandon Baumgartner was stellar in a two-hit shutout.

Mayville 4, Jamestown Hounds 3

Mayville earned its spot in the title game with a last-at-bat win.

With the bases loaded and nobody out, Preston Kath singled home Mickey Berry as the Redcaps edged the Jamestown Hounds 4-3 in a cleanly played game.

Berry had opened the inning with a double, his third hit of the game.

Mayville finished with 12 hits led by a 3-for-3 performance from Connor Weber.

The Hounds had 11 hits. Lance Ibesate, Riley Schafer and Jake Stilwell—the top three in the order—each had two knocks. Ibesate scored three runs. Danny Fischer also had two hits for the Hounds, who made a strong showing in the "AAA" tournament after winning the "AA" tournament the weekend before.

Neither team made an error in the game.

Merchants 5, Elks 0

Baumgartner allowed only two singles in sailing through seven innings against the Jamestown Elks.

Baumgartner had five 1-2-3 innings, allowing a single to Kyle Mallory in the third and a blooper in the seventh to Erik Peterson. He finished with four strikeouts.

Joe Vannett singled home Scott Stephenson for the first run in the bottom of the second. It was a two-out hit. Stephenson brought home Jared Purdy in the third with a single and a 2-0 lead.

The Merchants iced it with three in the fifth, capped by Anthony Fontana's two-out single to score Tom Houdek.

Purdy and Bryan Erstad each had two hits for the Merchants.

Merchants 10, Brewers 1, 6 Innings

Veteran Greg Lunski tossed a complete game in the opener on Saturday for the Merchants.

Lunski allowed just two hits and a run with four strikeouts in a typically solid outing.

The Merchants had eight hits in six innings, but also drew seven walks and the Bismarck Brewers committed four errors.

Brady Anderson was 3-for-4 for the Merchants with a double, RBI and two runs.

The Brewers' lone run came on an RBI double from Jay Crowley.

Hounds 2, Blue Jackets 1

The Hounds hunted late to earn a spot in the semifinals.

Down 1-0 in their final at bat, Riley Schafer scored Levi Gaunska with a sacrifice fly and Jake Stilwell singled home Nick Fuchs with two outs for the game-winner.

Blaze Culliton and Nate Dinga locked horns in a pitchers' duel. Culliton allowed five hits in seven strong innings. Dinga yielded to Joe Solberg in the seventh.

Fuchs had two hits and walked for the Hounds. Garrett Jackson also had two hits.

Merchants 14, Redcaps 5, 5 Innings

The heat didn't affect Jameson Benson too much.

The Merchants' right-hander went 4 1/3 innings on the mound and hit a grand slam in the top of the third inning.

The Merchants had two six-run innings.

Dan Ross had two hits and two RBI. Brandon Baumgartner and Thomas Houdek also had two hits.

Connor Weber had an RBI double for the Redcaps.

Jamestown Elks 10, Bismarck Blue Jackets 4

The Elks stayed alive by pulling away late to beat the Bismarck Blue Jackets in the Saturday finale.

The Elks trailed 2-0 after the first inning, but scored 10 of the last 12 runs of the game, putting it away with a four-run top of the seventh.

Kyle Mallory had a two-run single in the seventh and finished with four RBI. Corry Shevlin had three hits in four at bats.

The win went to Joe Gebhardt, who worked the first five innings on the hill. Jon Spradlin got the last six outs to earn the save.

James Carroll gave the Blue Jackets a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a two-run homer.
