Young players swept the MVP awards for the 2015 state amateur baseball tournaments.

Two Jamestown High School graduates and a California native have earned the awards.

In Class A, the Gackle Merchants outscored their two opponents 16-2 and Brian Wenzel was on the mound for all 12 innings.

The University of Jamestown recruit allowed just two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts. Wenzel also went 3-for-8 at the plate and scored three runs en route to earning MVP honors.

Gackle, which essentially was the Jamestown Legion team, beat Fairview 9-0 and the Jamestown Tarno Townies 7-2.

The Townies had a good tournament, going 2-1. Veteran and many-time MVP Cory Anderson pitched 14 solid innings. Mike Rerick had a dominant 14-strikeout performance for Tarno and slugging Sam Joseph had four hits, including a home run and double.

Class AA MVP honors go to Robbie Rocamora.

The former Northern State baseball player and San Marcos, Calif., native, helped the Jamestown Hounds "AA" crown.

The Hounds scored 25 runs in their 3-0 run and Rocamora drove in eight of them. Rocamora had a grand slam, two-run homer and a run-scoring double in the tournament. In all, he finished 4-for-7 and also walked three times.

The Hounds also got a strong tournament for Jake Stilwell with five hits in 10 at bats.

Few, if any, amateur players in North Dakota have more MVP awards than Cory Anderson.

Now, his son Brady has one of his own.

Brady collected nine hits in 15 at bats last weekend in helping the Jamestown Miller Lite Merchants to their ninth state championship in team history.

Brady, who still has two years of eligibility remaining at Valley City State after sitting out last season, had three doubles in the Class AAA tournament. He scored four runs, stole a base and had just one error in four games at shortstop for the Merchants, who outscored their four opponents 35-10 in the tournament.

Brandon Baumgartner delivered a two-hit shutout on the mound in the semifinals over the Jamestown Elks. Greg Lunski, Jameson Benson and Sam Hirchert also pitched effectively for the Merchants.
