Merchants go 1-2 at Jack Brown Invitational

May 31, 2021

Jamestown, ND- The Miller Lite Merchants took part in the Jack Brown Stadium Invitational this past weekend and came away with a 1-2 record.

Behind solid defense and pitching the Merchants played three closely contested ballgames this weekend. In their opener on Sunday against Tolna, the Trojans were able to sneak across a single run in the 4th to ruin a gem of an outing by starting pitcher John Eckstein.

The M’s were shutout and managed only four hits with only one runner reaching second base in the 1-0 loss.

In game two against the Jamestown Greyhounds, the M’s once again managed only four hits.

The Greyhounds jumped on Merchant starter Brandon Baumgartner right away in the first with a two-run homer.

The Merchants only run and lone bright spot at the plate on Sunday was Preston Jensen’s 4th inning solo home run to make it a 3-1 ballgame.

However, the Greyhounds extended their lead in the fifth with a couple two-out RBI’s to make it a 5-1 final score.

On Monday, the Merchants finally broke through. After being no-hit through the first three innings by the Jamestown Brewers starter the Merchant bats exploded for 5 runs on 5 hits.

That was plenty of runs for Merchant starter Garrett Hodenfield and he threw six solid innings on the mound to collect his first career Merchant win.

The Merchants (3-2) will be back in action on Wednesday against the Moorhead Mudcats. First pitch 7:00pm at Helling Field.
