Cornerstone Trait - ENTHUSIASM

The second building block in Wooden's Pyramid of Success is Enthusiasm. It is defined in the pyramid as:

ENTHUSIASM - Brushes off upon those with whom you come in contact. You must truly enjoy what you are doing.

People might think God has little to say about enthusiasm, but the Bible has a few nuggets of wisdom regarding enthusiasm. Some other words synomymous with enthusiasm are passion, spirit, eagerness, joy, and devotion, to name a few.

Two passages that stand out, which you may have come across are found in Ecclesiastes and Colossians. In Ecclesiastes 9:10 we read, "Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might (valor, energy, prowess, vigor)...". In Colossians 3:23 we read, "Whatever you do, work heartily (earnestly, genuinely) as unto the Lord, and not for men".

One of my favorite quotes I've come across over the years is "Anything less than a man's best effort cheats himself! Demeans him! Spoils him! Ruins him! Cheapens him!"

Jim Harbaugh is known for saying to his team, "Attack the day with enthusiasm unknown to man!".

When you bring energy, spirit, courage, and enthusiasm to your people whether it be family or teams, people will be drawn. It cannot be faked, must be genuine, and must be cultivated. Some of our teammates bring enthusiasm, but each player must decide to be intentional about bringing energy and enthusiasm.

It's as simple as greeting teammates when you first arrive at practice or a game. That should be the first thing on your list each time we have a team activity.

It's difficult for any of us not to be impacted by people around us who are genuinely invested in getting better by giving their very best and do that with passion and energy.

Let's work on being intentional with our commitment to practicing the first two cornerstone traits in the coming weeks.
