John Eckstein thought it would be a short night for him during the first inning Wednesday night. His elbow was feeling a bit tight and he had post game empenadas in the parking lot on his mind, but he settled in and ended up throwing a complete game and beating the Brewers 9-1 at lovely Bennett Elementary Field.
The game was scoreless through six innings with both pitchers dealing. The Merchants did have plenty of baserunners but failed to get them in. Then, the 7th inning rolled around and specifically Dan Ross. After three straight singles from the bottom of the order, Dan provided the big blow out of the nine hole with a line drive grandslam to left field. That got the Merchants going as they ended up with nine runs off of 11 hits in the 7th after the dust settled. The M's totaled 15 hits on the night with the Venezuelan connection of Carlos and JB leading the way combining for seven hits. Tommy and Bstad doubled as well.
The Merchants move to 10-0 on the season and will be back in action next Wednesday vs. the Catfish at the friendly confines of Helling Field.
Notes:
*JB's wife did bring post game empenadas to the parking lot and they were delicious.
* The Merchants have homered out of the nine hole in two straight games.
