Week 2 Power Rankings

July 1, 2023 – 09:00 AM

With week 1 in the books we now have a better understanding of all the teams and how they will be managed as the season progresses. Remember, the season is only 12 games long and with 3 games already played we are now 25% of the way through the season.  As week 2 aproaches we can now gave power rankings to all the teams based on their proformaces in week 1, but first, some week 1 highlights:

In week 1 we saw more BB than Hits at a total of 71 walks to 54 hits given up by pitchers.  These numbers are likely to decline as all pitchers were strugling with controling the ball.  The very first game of the season we saw our first upset when the Apollos beat the Minutemen by a score of 6-2. Afterwards the Apollos were outscored by the Minutemen 29-7 in the final 2 games of the series.  Over the 3 game stretch we did get a Home Run Show with 5 being hit (2 by Minutemen Captain B. Neilan, 2 by Apollos 1B B. Thompson, and 1 by Apollos Captain "Boom Boom" Reifel).

The 2nd series we saw pitching dominance by a solid 1-2 punch Deep Ones pitcher S. Reifel and M. Barker by only allowing 2 runs on 3 hits.  Game 1 started off with S. Reifel pitching a No-Hitter and striking out 3 batters, followed by Game 2 seeing M. Barker take the mound and only giving up a solo shot to Demons 1B C. Bruce. We are excited to see if the Minutemen are able to cool off the Deep Ones pitching staff or will the Deep Ones continue their dominance and shut down the red hot Minutemen bats.

Week 2 Power Rankings:

1. New England Minutemen

Its hard to argue not giving the Minutemen the number 1 spot again after watching the Minutemen putting up a league leading 35 runs in their first series against division rivals The Apollos.  Captain B. Neilan struggled on the mound giving up 7 runs on 10 hits but J. Napolitano stepped up both on the mound and at the plate tossing 3 scoreless innings and knocking in 12 runs.

2. Innsmouth Deep Ones

The Deep Ones showed dominance on the mound agains division rivals The Demons by outscoring them 22-2.  Their plate discipline helped carry the offence by only striking out 3 times and walking 23 times.  With a big series in week 2 against the Minutemen, The Deep Ones hope their bats stay hot and their pitching remains dominant.

3. Mare Tranquillitatis Apollos

After an unexpected win in the first game of the season, the wheels began to fall off when the Apollos fears became reality: they only have 1 good pitcher on the team.  The Apollos pitching staff have a collective ERA of 11.63 with 29 walks and 12 Strike Outs. "Boom Boom" Reifel and B Thompson walked 17 and struk out 1 batter while putting up 99.99 and 29.25 ERAs. In a 3 game series, as long as Ace B. Dexter has command of his pitches, the Apollos can squeek out 2 wins and take a series, which almost happened against the Minutmen in week 1. With his dominance on the mound in week 1, it would be nice to see B. Dexter's bat to heat up against a strugling Demons team in week 2.

4. Dover Demons

The Dover Demons offence was almost non existent other than putting up 9 walks but only getting 3 hits and striking out 10 times in the opening series of the year. The most impressive part of their outing was A. Reifel's preformance on the mound in game 3, giving up only 2 runs in 3 innings and only walking 2 batters. If she can continue to channel this pitching ablility, she can give her team a chance to stay in games and hoping the offence can shake the funk off from the first series. Another promise was C. Bruce showing off his power at the plate hitting 1 HR off of pitcher M. Barker. Once his bat starts to heat up, expect more balls to land on the other side of the fence. C. Bruce also had a rough outing in game 2 walking all 7 batters he faced before being pulled in the 1st inning.  His pitches showed promise with movement and speed and it would have been nice to see him remain on the mound and work on his control, but as of now, The Demons have only 1 pitcher, A. Reifel, and going up against a team in the same predicament, the Demons vs Apollos should be an interesting one to say the least.
